Are the Kadazan natives the big losers in Sabah?

My visit to Sabah last week has stirred a hornet’s nest.

Today, a Sabah daily – Daily Express – carried a report with the headline “IDS boss dismisses Kit Siang’s claim as nonsense – Many KDMs hold key posts” to respond to me, which is reproduced below:

Bernama also has a report, as follows:

Kit Siang’s Claims That Kadazandusun Were Big Losers In Sabah Baseless – Malakun

KOTA KINABALU, March 3 (Bernama) — Sabah Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) deputy president Datuk Clarence Bongkos Malakun described a recent statement by DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang that Kadazandusun Murut (KDM) community were the biggest losers under Barisan Nasional (BN) in Sabah, as nonsense, baseless and malicious.

He said it was rather amusing for someone who had only stayed for a short duration in Sabah to claim knowledge of the local scenario and thus qualifying himself to comment on local issues which were far from the truth.

Malakun said the BN government in Sabah, under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, had been performing excellently, not only on matters concerning physical development but also on matters related to social development, particularly maintaining racial harmony among various ethnics here.

“Indeed the level of tolerance among the various races residing in Sabah has been acknowledged at large, as unique, if not the best,” he said here today.

He said a high level of tolerance was brought about by the fact that everyone knew discrimination based on racial background was not an issue in Sabah.

As a matter of fact, the Chief Minister himself is half KDM. His mother is a Dusun from the Gunsanad family originating from the Sundang and Sodomon family tree.

“As such, this provides more reasons for the Chief Minister to be extra concerned with the well-being of KDM,” he added.

Malakun said a large number of Kadazandusun in Sabah were holding important positions in the government sector.

“In fact, two KDM are holding very important ministerial posts in the Federal Government. KDM are also well represented in the state cabinet.

“Out of the 10 ministries under the state government, four permanent secretary posts are held by the KDM community. In terms of scholarship, ever since under USNO, KDM have been among major recipients of state scholarships,” he said.

Malakun said both the state and Federal governments were continuously taking steps to improve the livelihood of the people in Sabah “no matter who they are”.

“The Sabah Development Corridor (SDC), is one good example of the government’s seriousness in trying to eradicate poverty in Sabah.

“Various programmes are being outlined under the SDC by the government to uplift the living standards of the poor and to bring them out from the poverty cycle,” he said.

Citing agropolitan as a good example of poverty eradication program under the SDC, he said the program was focusing on areas in Tongod, Pitas, Nabawan, Keningau, Kemabong and Beluran.

“These are areas with KDM majority. Looking at these facts, does Kit Siang really has an issue to raise on the KDM in Sabah?,” he asked.

Malakun said it was clear that Kit Siang’s statement was made on purpose to divert attention on major political woes currently faced by the opposition.

I offer this blog to the people of Sabah and Malaysia to give their views on this issue – which should be widened to whether the Kadazan natives are the biggest losers in Sabah.

  1. K1980 is right. Pairin as the “most senior” Kadazan leader should reassure malaysians that Kadazans have been failry treated; that there is no major grievance- n, not i/c , not immigration woes in Sabah et. al. and that Kadazans are enjoying their place cmfortably under the Sabah sun.

Then all the best to you Kadazans. Hope 20 years from now, u won’t see a greated deuge of unemployed Sabah youths flooding KL or even going to Indonesia as illegal migrant workers!

Clarence, I really wonder if yr brains r in the right box and if yr heart is in the right cavity and yr soul is right with God.

It’s amazing how many people have small minds, shallow thoughts and selfish ambitions, sacrificing the larger good of the Sabah people and what would help them achieve their dreams for the 21st century. Clarence, amazing, hah?

  2. Hello Clarence, maybe it is not too late to read this. maybe u shud also leave BN as a matter of conscience and stop spilling all those platitudes. It’s so obscene.:

……There is a cost to my decision, however, a price to pay. In making my choice, to be fair, I am hereby withdrawing my association from any group or body where political non-partisanship is necessary.”

As for me, I HAVE MADE MY CHOICE.

  3. Lord Jesus, please have mercy on the people of Sabah. Bless them so that they can have everlasting peace and harmony. Forgive those who betrayed the people of Sabah.
Land below the wind was a beautiful place until toon bak kut teh came and destroyed everything. It may take a long time to restore back the past glory and wealth, but with God, everything is possible. Remember how Moses open up the sea?

  4. It’s sad to see Pairin, the architect and rouser of the Spirit of Tambunan reduced to nothing but a yes man. We are subjugated, no mistake about that. The leaders know it but they are not going to do anything about it because they are reaping all the rewards that they have put in through the years.

Their mouth and eyes are covered by RINGGIT. They are swimming in $$$, why do they want to rock the boat?

New leaders in Sabah have to be found, mentored and groomed. The current ones, they are opportunist that sprung out when PBS was weakened.

  5. Those already on the gravy train will only see those who are already on board.

They just can’t see, don’t want to see or pretend not to see the many others who are outside the train who will never be able to get on.

Bungkus can’t see the many poor villagers who are trying very hard to make ends meet, who struggle every day to get by, whose children get up at 4 am, walk miles in the dark, crossing dangerous terrain and rivers just to get to a rural school. The roads in Sabah are atrocious, the people lack basic facilities, the cost of living high, crime rate is high.

But to Bungkus, Sabah is a very well developed state with a very high standard of living and high social development. Its paradise there.

Hey, it even has got lots of oil royalty money which it does not need and generously give away to the Feds.

  6. The Kadazans will end up like MCA eunuchs. Even their own election its decided by UMNO. Next they decide their wives and mistresses and daughters are available to trade around among themselves…

  7. Kit Siang’s Claims That Kadazandusun Were Big Losers In Sabah Baseless – Malakun

KOTA KINABALU, March 3 (Bernama) — Sabah Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) deputy president Datuk Clarence Bongkos Malakun described a recent statement by DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang that Kadazandusun Murut (KDM) community were the biggest losers under Barisan Nasional (BN) in Sabah, as nonsense, baseless and malicious. ……Yes I support YB.Lim Kit Siang’s claim that Kadazan/Dusun/Murut community were the biggest losers under BN in Sabah. I provide the following questions to put Datuk Malakun in condenm. Can Malakun deny that the KDM communiity has now become the minority ? Can he deny that that the heart land of the KDM for example Penampang is the least developed ? Can he deny that most KDM’s original lands now have gone into other community’s ownership for example Kundasung and Ranau ? Can he deny that thousands of employable KDM youth, men and women are jobless ? Can he deny that the University of Malaysia Sabah has more non-KDM students ? Can he deny none KDM senior police officer ever been promoted to the rank of state commissioner of police ? Can he deny that the BN Admin. has dumped the “Bornianisation ” plan to promote qualified Sabahans to head both state’s and federal’s departments and agencies ? Can Malakun name a truly successful KDM multi-million entrepreneur since 1963 ? The question list goes on .It’s pretty ridiculous for Malakun to claim success for the KDM community based on political connection. Having mininsters, asst ministers and secrertaries who are all “yes man ” to their political masters are no way to show success and Malakun needs to examine his head before he further make a fool of himself. Malakun a KDM and lives here for years yet he didn’t see what YB Lim saw the real cries of the KDM community despite the short duration of his time in Sabah. I think Malakun is a disgrace to his own KDM communiity to accuse YB Lim of talking nonsense and telling lies of the KDM community which in fact are the biggest losers under BN in Sabah.

  8. Typical DAP’s style…Why still talk about race ? KDM community are proud of Malaysia’s multiracial population….They have been living peacefully, harmoniously, united and with mutual respect and understanding for so long. So why bother?

  9. //As a matter of fact, the Chief Minister himself is half KDM. His mother is a Dusun from the Gunsanad family originating from the Sundang and Sodomon family tree.// (Datuk Clarence Bongkos Malakun)

Datuk Malakun is telling the truth — the Kadazan Melayu (Muslim) people are always given much more priority in terms of government project award and state land award than the Kadazan Dusun (Christian) people. Th CM Musa Aman (a Kadazan Melayu) is therefore chosen as the Chief Minister to replace the much more qualified Pairin Kitingan (a state-wide tribal chief of Kadazan Dusun). It is proven that Barisan Nasional is just a Malay Racist controlled political coalition.

  10. UMNO love to use race and religion in politics and they are governing the country.
What Lim Kit Siang is proving …is that…even in race and religion….within BN…UMNO have double standards..and it takes a blockhead like cintanegara to insult DAP…with his usual half baked conclusion.
All Malaysians were living happily..harmoniously…etc etc etc…UNTIL..they found …right now..,an alternative..to govern the country…and what Lim Kit Siang exposed is…besides …corruptions…..UMNO applys double standards…within BN…and cintanegara should be ever grateful to DAP…that LKS is fearless…exposing frauds….corruptions…by UMNO with their half truths …keep fooling Malaysians.
Anyway…we know cintanegara will always defend UMNO …with his typical style…while Malaysians LKS will write with his typical style….and lets see how Malaysians reacts towards…whatever LKS write or speak.
It is shivering stuffs to UMNO and Najib…when LKS speaks or write.
They are attacking Anwar…and leaving LKS alone…out of no choice…and all will backfire…in 13th GE.

  11. We can say..in the past..Kadazans have not much choices…but to be like MCA…carrying UMNO balls.
However…the carrying have extended to selling their souls to Mahathir…who encouraged corruptions…therefore…converting Kadazans to worship money and declare UMNO has their provider…their …earthly God.
Lets see how true Kadazans are ..THE VOTERS…the man in the street…with their conscience….as more and more are revealed to them…after 12th GE.
Will they be backward and selfish people..or move forward.
    Usually….TRUTHS conquer all.
If not…then religion is dead in Sabah too.
UMNO have made is so…in many States…and 4 plus one..have awakened.
The rest is history…as we can see.non stop …….promoting UMNO instead of working ..after 12th GE.
    Why so?
    The devil have been exposed!!

  12. what farce you sabahans have, a clown trying to be more clown that pee ends clowns…
grow up and stop that wishful thinking

stop bluffing your own kinsmen,,learn something original lah.
learn from sarawak…solidarity at its best …so far.

  13. The truth about this Bongkos guy can only be found by tracing his career and his jobs in Sabah. All based on rentier basedon his connections. Not a day of sincere endeavour to earn his keep.

  14. YB Lim,all the 2009 SPM students hope that it will not be a begging season for them as used to be during last couples of years after their results were announced.Under the popular concept of 1 Malaysia, all those SPM high achievers would like to be treat equally and fairy for selections of entry to IPTA or the awardings of the highly ddemanded JPA scholarships. They all expect the concept equality as what they had received from their teachers while in schools.Meritocracy should be above any others.Pls remind Najib to keep to his words.

  15. Sabahan must strive to have their Little Big Horn and drive the UMNO/BN and conspirators back to their own bankrupt land..Musa Aman is their Custer, the issue is who will be their Sitting Bull??

  16. There is no point for Clarence to stick his head in the sand.

Here is what came out of “theSun” today.

///KUALA LUMPUR: Efforts are being made by the government and non-government organisations to help homeless people in the city, following reports of a surge of people from SABAH caught in this situation.

“We want to get them off the streets………,” said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.///

Why a surge of people from Sabah in the KL capital and not a surge of people from Penang? This is the tragedy of Sabah under the helm of incompetent ministers – energetic, productive young people of Sabah are being turned into beggars on the Kuala Lumpur street.

Sabahans must grab the opportunity to change their destiny in the 13th general elections. They must vote for the right party which really cares for them.

looking after the well-being of Sabahans are accountable to the plight of

  17. cintanegara :Typical DAP’s style…Why still talk about race ? KDM community are proud of Malaysia’s multiracial population….They have been living peacefully, harmoniously, united and with mutual respect and understanding for so long. So why bother?

Typical Umno’s style to proclaims itself the only organisation in the whole country that protects the Malay bumiputras, and it still wants to ask why others still talk about race?

The KDM and other communities of Sabah were wary of the ‘Malayan’ style of politics propagated by Umno which was why they had insisted on the 20-point memorandum, especially to protect their racial & religious harmony, before becoming part of Malaysia.

The question is now whether Umno is now only focused on certain bumiputras while quietly disregarding the other bumiputras.

  18. chengho :for the last few entries Kit trying to divert people attention to PKR problem in West Malaysia.

If that’s true, why didn’t YB LKS delete from his blog all those articles/entries which refer to PKR’s problems?

  19. I want to add more problems face by the KDM and hope Malakun would open his eyes and do something to help his own people whom he claimed to represent.Take a tour of Dongogon town,Ranau town/Tambunan town and Temon town .These towns are in the heart land of the Kadazan,Dusun and Murut respectively.Take just one example the “Kedai kopi dan Restaurant”,one can hardly find one which is fully operated by the KDM .And worst still, these shops hardly employed any KDM people instead one find most of these employees are foreigners (illegal immigrants, some IMM 13 holders, many are under the age of 18 yrs). No wonder most of the KDM youth, men and women flocked over to KL and as reported some have turned beggers. I also wonder whether Malakun has ever realized that the KDM communiity and population have been pushed from their respective town centres towards inland as some sold their properties and most find they could not survive any more, thus were force to migrate further inland. Most having move to the interior of Sabah and found they have no land to cultivate and no big forest to hunt for survival as most of these lands have been taken by huge plantation corporations from west malaysia.Another problem I hope Malakun would help his own people is the mixed marriages between non muslim KDM and other non malays/muslim community. I understand the federal now does not accept registration for new child born as ” SINO-KDM “.This would ended up another blow to the KDM community. In a nut shell, the KDM community has lost control of their towns, they have lost their lands to cultivate and hunt, they are un-employed,forced to seek jobs in west malaysia, some are forced to beg, some turned drug addicts, some turned criminals and several committed suicides and yet Malakun said that his KDM community is not the biggest losers in Sabah under the admin. of the BN goverment.I want to reiterate that Malakun should examine his head before he makes further fool of himself among his own community, and the people of Sabah.

  20. many immigrants to sabah regardless legal or otherwise are not the regime preferred faith, so they will have hard time and lots of maoney to do the changes.
so better treat as non existent first while enrolled them using carrot as enticement.

like this sabah is secured…anyway the local aredi under CONTROLLED….only when they learn to SEE further ….then habis for pee end and the LIGHT from the sabah mountains will become BRIGHT and CLEAR for original SABAH.

  21. Dear Malaykun,
If you don’t wake up and do something for your own people, and if you continue to deny everything, God have mercy on you, because you will end up somewhere between heaven and hell. It is this kind of mentality that cause the downfall of PBS. You have blinded by money and cheap position, just like many of the past leaders …

  22. wonder how long can a cheaf hold office , if forever….then got problem lah…it is the millenium and got alot to catching up to do….

haha… using a mobile phone, subsribing cable tv, using computer does not mean you are, these are merely tools my friend…

Sorly lah, if your cheaps like dat.

blind man leads blind people….how far can sabah people see ……across the river or across the ocean….
