Proton should respond to the shocking report from New Zealand where Proton Jumbuck turned in worst crash test ute performance and adjudged not fit for the road

Updated with video

The Proton management should respond to the shocking report from New Zealand where Proton Jumbuck turned in the worst crash test ute performance and adjudged not fit for the road.

The two-door Jumbuck utility vehicle (ute) was given dismal safety ratings by independent crash test organisation Ancap (Australasian New Car Assessment Programme) in New Zealand, awarded the lowest possible one-star rating after its performance in frontal offset and side impact crash tests.

Ancap scores vehicles from zero to five stars, depending on the safety features and protection of the driver and passengers.

The ute’s cabin was severely deformed in the 64km/h offset crash test. It offered poor head protection for the driver and passenger, and poor leg protection for the driver.

It also lacked airbags, ABS, and electronic stability control – a feature that senses skidding and individually brakes the wheels, helping the driver to regain control.

The Proton Jumbuck joined two other utes available in New Zealand in being given dismal safety ratings by Ancap

The New Zealand media today quoted Consumer NZ testing manager Hamish Wilson as saying that potential buyers should steer clear of these utes.

“We don’t believe these vehicles should be allowed on the road.”

He said the minimum standard for a new ute should be four stars. The Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton and several Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore utes achieved this.

The difference in safety between a two-star and a four-star ute was significant, he said.

“It can mean the difference between walking away from a crash and being taken away in an ambulance.”

The following is the report from New Zealand Herald:

Malaysian ute’s crash-test score sparks Consumer NZ safety warning

The Proton Jumbuck gained only one star.

A Malaysian-manufactured ute has turned in the worst crash test performance of any vehicle being sold here, Consumer New Zealand warns.

The Proton Jumbuck ($24,000) joined two other utes available in New Zealand in being given dismal safety ratings by independent crash test organisation Ancap (Australasian New Car Assessment Programme).

The two-door Chinese-manufactured Great Wall Motors SA220 ($22,000) was given a lowly two-star rating, with findings that its protection for the driver was poor and its passenger compartment buckled in a frontal offset crash test.

While Great Wall Motors’ larger four-door V240 ($27,000) model has dual front airbags and ABS brakes, it was also awarded only a two-star rating.

Consumer NZ testing manager Hamish Wilson said potential buyers should steer clear of these utes.

  1. I think the NZ Proton office made a mistake in naming the car. Should have been Proton 1Jamban.

    1 Star Jamban.

On the serious note, I wonder how many have lost love ones in road crashes because (all) Proton is FLAWED by design.

It should be crime against humanity!

Just an unfair comparison between Proton and Toyota. Toyota recalled 3.8 million vehicles because its floor mats causes the accelerator pedal to get stuck. It is a serious problem. But Proton is not even road worth!

And I as a Malaysian have to risk my life everyday because I cannot afford any other car other than the coffin on wheels. All because of the EGO of UMNO and their cronies.

  2. I am glad this news is out.
I noticed so many accident cars…with not tto bad an impact…..but the whole body just wrapped up like tin can foil.
Lets see what will UMNO so call Min.Of Trade have to say. I guess he may say …he is on marketing…and that may fall into Min.Of Transport?…which may say…..since in involves lives….it should be Min .of Health.
Be prepared for silence or passing the buck…blaming proton….but never on the government that should actually have all the facilities to check everything.
Tomorrow….be prepared to find lizard tail at so call mineral water….which are mostly..filtered..tap water…yet approved by the government…for such a high selling price.

  3. Umnoputras oredi knew all Proton cars tak boleh pakai 1
How many Umnoputras you know drive Proton cars
Where got 1, most of them drive foreign models like Alphard, Aston Martin DB9, Rapide, Cayman, Cayenne 1
What’s that botak or soon-2-be botak son of MMK driving, Proton ah

  4. All professional drivers know Proton…any model is a succide car.
Khairy is the first…and that is why Mahathir hates Khairy like poison.
But in UMNO….everything will be OK…to cover each other ass.

  5. Every new Proton owner knows this experience
Within a week or two after having your new Proton car
    You encountered defect or defects
Took your new Proton car back to the workshop
N the ppl there told you: lucky lah you, just this or that problem, other owners got bigger problem
Totally no shame n pride over their products
Not even apologetic n they expected every new car to have faults galore
What to do lah, Malaysians, kena cheated n squeezed by Proton, MMK’s pet prpoject

  6. I was struggling to find out why I hadn’t found this “shocking” news to be that really shocking to myself…I probably have read too much from the non-MSN and too little from the MSN.

But I think it’s important to arouse more public awareness on this. It concerns our national image in genaral , not only Proton’s.
And we are talking about elevating ourselves to a higher-income economy.

  7. In BOLEHLAND everything is for show only. What others can do, kita pun boleh. BUT, where is the standard? Looks the part but doesn’t fill the part. Churning out many graduates without quality is but a self defeating act. Only time will tell.

  8. With a reputation for being Malaysian 1Jamban, it’s time to sell 99% equity to the kweilou before they get whiff of this and scramble away.

    Any takers?

Maybe for another 1 Euro? Malaysia Boleh-lah!

  9. Proton already protested the test, since it’s pointless to test the old Jumbuck

See, new Jumbuck coming. The old one is going out of the door, so those whiteys shouldn’t put much into it. But laughable is the only word I can’t think off reading most of the comments here! So quick to condemn Proton and prove the matsalleh right.

  10. To think all this damage at just 64kmph. What if it was at 110 kmph like most 1Malaysians drive at?

How much will it cost Proton to recall all the cars already sold? RM 12.5 billion?

Wait till some Mat Salleh start a class action suit for RM 12. 5 billion.

  11. And Dr. M blames Malaysians for not being more supportive of Malaysian brands. He claims that’s the reason why Malaysian companies are not successful is because Malaysians don’t buy Malaysian goods. What a joke!

Imagine. This joker ruled Malaysia for 20+years.

  12. In any other countries with the exception of ZIMBABWI, UMNO Baru/BN leaders would have been booted out long time ago. Treating lives of rakyat like dirt, making unsafe cars and giving most rakyat with no other alternative but to buy Proton because of very high taxes levied on imported cars, making the prices beyond the reach of ordinary Malaysians.

  13. WTF Proton Jumbuck costs $24,000?This is the funniest joke I’ve ever heard. How can Proton go internationally? Look, hey Proton wake up please, V240 is only $27K, $3K extra from your “sub-superior” quality model.

Wondering when will NAP be reviewed? WIll it be in Oct2009? Or it will be Oct2019, 10 years later and we continue to pay for this piece of sh*t.

  14. Winston….Plain stupidity and selfishness.
Malaysians Muslims have been programmed to depend on UMNO.
Malaysian Chinese are great survivors…mostly do not depend on government jobs or help..but love peace and harmony…until all woke up and realized they slot to send their children for further studies….and UMNO is clearly a racist party..applying double standards…plus MCA is not fighting for their own races…except play dirty politics with Chinese schools and temples….focusing in protecting the Chinese culture and way of life..as most important..ignoring the cries of thousands upon thousands Chinese….being ill treated by UMNO.
Malaysia Indians do work in government offices alot…and this race is split…having awakened to the nonsense of MIC..particularly…Samy Vellu..talk alot…did nothing.
All in all…for peace and harmony….alot of Malaysians who desires to change he government…voted UMNO back to govern…for UMNO have shown…….how cruel they can be..if you do not toe the line.
Fear factor..is now getting lesser and lesser and that’s what worry UMNO most…coming out with slogans .sweets and good news…to ask…all to forget the past…lets move forward…and Najib said…UMNO will help all with no race discrimations.
If you support a PM who swear by the Koran…and not go to court to prove his innocence..,that the RM500 millions he approved is commission..to others…that UMNO..is not a racialist party….and above all…putting Isa in Bagan Pinang …that UMNO does not support corruptions……..then all those voters supporting UMNO are more than naive and stupid.
It has a mixture of weird characteristics…difficult to describe..since UMNO have poison so many minds to be half pass sixes too.

  15. I think our Malaysian motor journalists must begin to write honestly about the Poton cars they ‘reviewed’. It’s time to call a spade a spade. Give credit where it’s due and the public must be told if the car is a potential coffin on wheels!

Someone I know took the new Proton MPV for a test drive. When he revved the engine it sounded like a rocket engine! Come to think of it, I haven’t really seen those machines on the road yet. Have you? Wonder why, hmm….?

  16. In his desperation to jumpstart the local car industry, Mamakthir accepted whatever outdated technology that came his way – phased out Mitsubishi engines, door panels as soft as Milo tin cans, no air bags…..

To encourage the rakyat to buy this outdated and unsafe technology, he made imported cars unaffordable to the ordinary man. Cars which could have saved countless lives during collisions. Did Mamakthir care about lost lives ? No, he had to pawn the lives of motorists for his vision of wawasan 2020.

That’s why we should record the history of Mamakthir as the pied piper who led so many people off the cliff.

  17. This morning I happened to have a copy of What Car? magazine in my hand. Just curious on the rating of proton cars i turned the page. As expected, all proton model has only 1 star rating. yes, my dear 1 star-ALL.

After more than 20 years in existence, proton still manage to churned of loads of sh!tty cars.

Well, the same reasons i dont buy their cr@p. All the cars i owned previously are second- hand japanese car. And will continue doing so until their ego maniac brains realised that our lives are worth more than their leg-shaking umno goons at the top. My 15 years old Honda Civic beats those cr@ps anytime.

LULUS – Loss of Upper Limbs Usually Severe -LULUS my foot!!!

  18. How did the Aussies, Kiwis etc etc allow this “Jumbuck” into their countries in the first place?

Did they not check the quality of this car from a low-tech country before allowing it to be imported?

  19. For the past 20 years Malaysia has the honor of having one of the highest car accident fatality rate per capital in the world.

Surely Proton and TDM have both played a critical role to make Malaysia to achieve this feat!

  20. Yip..I was right…small accident..kancil took the impact with signs of such a terrible one…while the other car…just a slight dent.
I drive a Volvo…few times..Proton cars..simply bang at my back bumper…because they want to speed like me.. and cannot stop instantly…when needed to.
Got out..my bumper …..not one scratch or dent…but that poor guy…Proton..water oozed out……bonnet and bumper dented like such a big accident.
He knows he was wrong…but always pity such guys.. .owning cars that are made from Milo tin cans and safe features are clearly not in Proton.
Keep cutting cost to fool Malaysians with no technology nor knowledge on cars…….keep buying designs that are not used by others..paying millions…doing nothing,……know next to nothing.,,about cars…keep buying companies to buy up so call technology and expertise..and that is how Proton…keep fooling Malaysians.
When doing well with a join venture…find a way…to discourage the Japanese partner…and own it all.
Such ungrateful characteristics are trademarks of UMNO people.
Cars needs never ending research and developments ….which cost hundreds of millions.
Use few millions buy up unused design…never really strong in research and development…saving hundreds of millions..declaring that as calling that profits…with huge huge salaries and bonuses to the few UMNO stooges employed to show…how smart they are.
Now lets see…how many UMNO companies really make decent profits? Name them.

  21. And in the end…it will always be bail out by using tax payers money or country’s natural wealth…belonging to Malaysians..all to save UMNO….nothing beneficial to Malaysians..with lots of UMNO half past sixes unable to understand..,,behaving ..no interested…..nothing concerning them….why worry.
    How wrong they are.
It’s their money too..used to save UMNO millionaires….and kitty bank.
Those ordinary UMNO members does not understand …UMNO is actually robbing them too.

  22. Any surprise ?

With Umnoputra’s policy of Ketuanan Melayu, it is a foregone conclusion that things like this will happen time and again for any GLC !

Only private sector factories can only be trusted for their products quality. Any Umno-linked companies which predicate on Racial supremacy can have their products for own use

  23. The man behind this project is still enjoying popular support among the Umnoputras, it seems.

How much damage he has done to the country ?

According to Panglima garang, innumerable !

Why has he the cheek to move around in the public ?

  24. “How much will it cost Proton to recall all the cars already sold? RM 12.5 billion?” – sheriff singh.

Quick thinking sheriff. Now some umnoputras will pester the umno goberment for a special directly negotiated contract to strenghten all condemned recalled vehicle. Yeah 12.5b is just about right.
