Power-sharing in BN? Press freedom in Malaysia?

Further confirmation that the government ban on the media from reporting comments on the “717 Declaration” of Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak that Malaysia is an Islamic state driven by Islamic fundamentals and not and never had been a secular state is confined to Ministers, Deputy Ministers and political leaders from MCA and other Barisan Nasional component parties but not to Umno.

This was why it was reported yesterday

(1) Umno Youth leader Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein defied the “ban” when he arrogated to himself the role of an “elder” and publicly warned MCA leaders to stop making statements on Malaysia being a secular state; and

(2) Umno Information Chief, Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib, distorted and rewrote constitutional history and developments to endorse Najib’s claim.

Today, Umno Youth deputy leader, Khairy Jamaluddin, has demonstrated that he is also not bound by the ban, which applies only to MCA Ministers, Deputy Ministers and national leaders and those from the other Barisan Nasional parties when Berita Minggu reported his speech on the subject, as follows:

Khairy’s arguments are open to challenge on many points, but this is not the purpose of this blog – which is on the double standards so blatant in BN.

Could the four MCA Ministers and the Ministers from Gerakan, MIC, SUPP, PBS and other BN component parties explain why the government ban is not only so arbitrary and undemocratic but so unfair and one-sided?

Is this the real meaning of “power sharing” in Barisan Nasional and media freedom in Malaysia?

62 Replies to “Power-sharing in BN? Press freedom in Malaysia?”

  1. Could the four MCA Ministers and the Ministers from Gerakan, MIC, SUPP, PBS and other BN component parties explain why the government ban is not only so arbitrary and undemocratic but so unfair and one-sided?

The answer is: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
From Napoleon’s commandment in “Animal Farm”, we should be able to trace the corruption of the pigs and perhaps relate their findings to individuals in our own government who have succumbed to the lure of power at any cost and by any means.

  2. The “sit, stand, and shut up” policy practiced by UMNO to the rest of its slavery component parties in BN is truly evident here. When the Master says white is black and black is white, there’s no way the slaves can say otherwise and there’s no two-ways about it, unless of course they are ready to face the wrath of its Master. The keris is at the backsides, ready to be stab inside the holes. Ouchhhh……..

  3. How could one justify that BN is practising power-sharing concept when M.Kayveas, being a president in People Progressive Party is just merely a deputy minister?

MIC, the 3rd largest component party inside the alliance, is only having Samy Vellu as a full minister. The same goes to Gerakan as being the 4th largest component party. This HP6 cabinet is oversized and dominated by UMNOputras. The others are just there to make up the number.

Hence, only UMNOputras could make and break the rules. The other component party leaders is being paraded there just to show the public and world that we are practising power-sharing. Any sane being will be able to tell you, this kind of administration we are having right now is not a power-sharing formulae.

The Prime Minister post should be rotated amongst all component parties’ leaders if BN practice true-power sharing concept.

  4. It’s the beginning of the jostle for the position of the next PM.
the 3 jokers obviously have aspirations for it
they will yak about NEP, malay supremacy, islam state to promote themselves
so don’t be surprise if the crooked dagger gets drawn again

  5. There is no surprise if the gag order only applied other parties and not UMNO….

In Last Year’s Umno Assembly, the leaders touched sensitive racial issues…. and Pak Lah said ‘itu tak diambil kira’…… But if other party do the same, ISA would be used….

In this country, UMNO is the big bully… the only way to remove it from power is by not voting for UMNO…. but their are so many naive and uneducated kampung people who are hardcore supporters of UMNO..

With NEP, we would have “Pak Pandir’ ruling this country… not the best people to lead he country .

With the discriminations and injustices to fellow human beings created by God (or Allah), they said it is Islamic country… Is injustices is alright according to the teaching of Islam?

  6. Saya juga sanggup berdebat dengan sesiapa juga yang terus-terusan mengatakan Malaysia adalah sebuah negara sekular. Bagi saya, Malaysia negara Islam,” katanya

    Uncle Kit!

I think he is proposing the debate! Are we all ready?

On the other hand, I would think he will show himself up for the debate…. Coz he is such a coward and brainless!!

So better still we hold the debate will najib himself!!

  7. KJ, Tony Pua is still waiting for his debate, you darte or not ah?

can only make noise through controlled media, dare not go for open debate ah…..

    so no balls one…

  8. I have a dog, I tell him to sit, he sits, I tell him to eat, he eats, I tell him to come, he comes with his tail between his legs.

MCA, when DAP join with PKR & PAS, your champion slogan is that DAP sleeps with the enemy, sold out Chinese for an Islamic nation, what say you now? got balls to talk back to your boss or not?

you’re being trumped big time by your boss, your days are numbered. finito liao

  9. can MCA leaders decide to separate their party from BN?

If UMNO treated MCA with no respect, why they still want to keep quiet and serve them? dont they have self integrity? self pride?

think and listen to this MCA members… suggest to leave the party or just leave the party, make the UMNOs panic, BN will not last more than 1 year without chinese’s support…

    [deleted]
    THINK!!

  10. Uncle Kit, I have had problem logging in your blog and to post comments for sometimes, and it is getting more difficult recently. Sometimes my past didn’t appear at all, if not I’ll be getting a problems establishing database connection. Sometime I can even access your blog for the longest time. I appreciates if you could look into these problems as I am sure I am not the only person who faced these problems and many valuable comments was forever lost in cyberspace.

[Thanks. I am beginning to face the “establishing database connection” problems myself. I am asking the IT support to look into it. – Kit]

  11. I’m 110% sure that BN leader have NO ball in open debate, althought i am not a doctor. Abdullah, Najib, Khairy and Keris man all are useless, always using malays issue to gain popularity. What a REAL shame….

  12. BN power sharing ! Wat’s that ? Didn’t know got such thing exit in BN woh! U sure ar?

As for Malaysia being a secular state; Tunku said it, Tun Hussein said it; Tun Razak said it. Period. BTW, who is Kerismuddin, MM Taib and Khairi? Small cikus in a UMNO power struggle- trying to gain grassroot support in the expense of one another.

  13. The truth is their are not equal partners. One post tried to relate to a trained dog which does sound fair when they have a nobody like KJ can make comments when non UMNO ministers on the other hand need to shut up.

Debate- send KJ to debate with the bar council. Make it based on facts and not a political one thus the bar council.

  14. Put the blame on Mahathir. He made MCA, MIC and Gerakan totally subservient to UMNO, and he also made sure that when crumbs roll off the table, UMNO’s non-Malay lapdogs will have them.

Now all of UMNO treats the leadership of the non-Malay parties with total disdain, and contempt. As the food at the main table becomes scarcer, there may not even be crumbs available to the non-Malay parties. In a one-person-one-vote system, UMNO knows it cannot lose even if all the non-Malays vote for the Opposition.

  15. I can also assure everyone that Kerismuddin and KJ see themselves as superior, and senior, to lapdogs like OKT, CKC and KTK. They know that in a matter of a year or two, they will certainly be in senior UMNO positions, and that is when the non-Malay leadership in BN will say “Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full” to Kerismuddin and KJ.

  16. exactly what i had been saying in comments at the post about kerismudidn giving the warning. i wonder at that time how come he can make those remarks on this islamic/secular issue when there was a ban… and now this, his deputy also talked on this issue.

oh well, we should know, don’t we, that there are 2 sets of rules in our country – one for UMNO and one for the rest.

  17. What lah KJ! He said Malaysia not a secular state, yet also not “exactly” the Islamic State as compared to Indonesia, Iran and so on. What is it? If we are a unique “Malaysian State”, then why not give a name and explain it in more details? Get all races together and define it together!

Perhaps we need to improve Social Contract to further define what “state” are we in now. I start to feel lost under this government… do they know what are they doing?

This thing called “religion” had been so “evil” lately. Everybody likes to use it to their advantages. Not just Islam, even in Christian, there are irresponsible people misuse their authority to gain advantage for themselves. It is sort of like “in the name of [religion], we are hereby grant/deny blah blah blah…”. Come on, this sort of “technique” is so cheap. It is no more practical in modern world.

Religion is only a guidance to your soul and your moral strength to face the challenging world given to us by our creator. It is really up to you to believe whether there is God. But trust me, the more science experiment you do or the more you look into sciences, the more wonder you find and the more you believe there is a God! So please, if you think you are religious person or have a friend who is very religious, look outside the box now and start to find God using practical and logical way. Not die-die believe via spiritual and unproven phenomena.

  18. It seems to me that such a statement by DPM and then those by the rest of the UMNOputra leaders are capable of a couple of interpretations.

First, it can be seen as a desperate ploy by DPM to bolster his sagging reputation after revelations in the on-going court case regarding the Mongolian lady.

Or is DPM given that task of playing this “Islam card” in Malaysian politics to save his own skin? Is the PM being away from the country at this moment (according to Malaysia Today) convenient to exempt him from any blame in case things do not turn out as planned?

Second, it can function as an election strategy to gain support among the Malay-Muslim voters. Hence, MCA is allowed to respond but UMNO hits back for the sake of gaining support from the Malay constituency.

In this way, UMNO is seen as champion of the Malays and MCA of Chinese!

  19. Alamak, why are people so surprised by the statements of Najib, Hishammuddin and Khairy? They are our rising stars and future PM-materials from UMNO. And UMNO is our acknowledged taiko. We all know and accept that we are all at the mercy and goodwill of UMNO that offers us whatever pleasure that it decides appropriate. If UMNO decides that Malaysia is a secular state, then it is. However, if UMNO decides that Malaysia is an islamic state, then it is. This is the real politics – UMNO rules, OK – period. Gerakan, MCA, MIC, etc are just decorative bed partners and lap dogs of UMNO to be directed and ordered around – shut up, sit, support, roll over, play dead, etc. Don’t be concerned about them. Likewise, DAP, PAS, and Keadilan are just pesky light-weight mosquito political entities of no consequence in the Malaysian polticial arena. They are allowed to be there by UMNO to showcase to the world that Malaysia is a democratic country with a parliament and opposition political parties. If people are not happy with the unilateral, high-handed, undemocratic, and history-twisting actions of UMNO, feel free to leave this nation. No loss to UMNO.

  20. Excerpts from “Animal Farm” :

“Napoleon abuses his powers, and life becomes harder and harder for the animals; the pigs impose more and more controls on them while reserving privileges for themselves. The pigs rewrite history …”

“Many years pass, and the pigs learn to walk upright, carry whips, and wear clothes. The Seven Commandments are reduced to a single phrase: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”….. ”

“The animals ……. notice that the faces of the ruling pigs have begun changing…….. and the animals realize that the faces of the pigs now look almost exactly like the faces of humans (whom they had overthrown) and they can no longer easily tell the difference between them….”

    Ah, Animal Farm. A masterpiece.

  21. And MCA Youth has come out with a strongly worded open letter to UMNO Youth about UMNO’s “Shut Up Order to MCA”. My, my, things are beginning to get hot.

    Leadership Development Bureau
    MCA Bangsar/22 July 2007

So UMNO Youth et al. What is your response?

  22. This is what happens when you put pretenders on the throne. Najib is an intellectual pretender. He reads a bunch of books and because of his position, he gets people to listen and agree with him and he think he has erased his intelectual failures of his youth. He hoist his own demon on to people much like Mugabe hoist it on his people.

The curiosity is why now? It could be election is round the corner but this is such a heated issue, why poke it. Frankly, its further proof of his intellectual mediocrity…

  23. What a stupid statement from MCA Youth. It objected to the fact that UMNO Youth did not observe the ban, but it never said anything about the ban itself, or if it supported OKC’s statement that Bodohland is a secular nation. If you wanted to show your b@lls, you should reiterate your stand if you firmly believe in it.

No, MCA Youth – your leaders have brown-nosed UMNO for so long and have been fed scraps by UMNO for so long they won’t make a squeak. Just make sure you reinforce the security around your offices for the mat rempits will be coming soon to throw a few molotov cocktails at you.

  24. Non Malays had contributed and sacrified enormously to a fair, modern, progressive and multi religious country. They owed the country nothing.

It is time for the Malays leaders/politicians to play a more constructive and responsible role in the development of a multi religious country.

  25. This is the reason why Malaysia after 50 years still a backwater..We allow emotions to overtake us too easily, all UMNO has to do when their policies are failing, when their personal credibility is at stake, is to appeal to racial issues and the whole nation fall for it, hook line and sinker…

As long as the people cannot rise above this ploy, we will forever be in the clutches of these people, (AP Kings, Womanisers, c4 experts)

  26. It is media which should be blamed for violating the ban, albeit illegal.
Politicians can say what they want. If the newspapers had not carried the stories as instructed by the Int Sec Ministry, then there would be no issue today.
The media should be reprimanded. But will the Int Sec Minister do it?

  27. You don’t fight bullies from some UMNO politicians by giving in. You got to face up to the grossly unacceptable behaviour. Don’t just put up with it.

” Bullying has been described as offensive behaviour intended to undermine or humiliate the recipient. Typical bullying includes obvious verbal abuse, threats and intimidation “.

  28. Libra2 says:

“…If the newspapers had not carried the stories as instructed by the Int Sec Ministry, then there would be no issue today.
The media should be reprimanded. But will the Int Sec Minister do it? ”

UMNO is above the law. Nobody reprimands UMNO. Even AAB doesn’t reprimand his people because the issues are way above his head. No, UMNO only reprimands those who are weak, and who have been proven to be subservient to them over the years.

  29. The BN concept of power sharing between the races will not work in the long run. Any communal-based political system will eventually cause more rift between the races as each party will fight for its own race instead of all Malaysians irregardless of race and religion. The BN concept is backward and seriously flawed should be obsoleted. Besides, the leadership in BN is hopelessly corrupted and mediocre. If after 50 years, we still identify ourselves as Malays, Indians, Chinese instead of being Malaysian, then BN has miserably failed.

  30. Sorry to say this but you are all talking nonsense. The fact of the matter is that the malays are more united than you think. They are also naturally emotional beings and the damn politicians know it. Hence, all the racial talk to unite them even further.

All the chinese want to do is to make money. As long as there is money to be made, why should we care what is happening to the country? Although the economic pie is still largely owned by the chinese, they don’t give two hoots about unity. Let the politicians fight among themselves. But when I need that contract, I’ll pull some strings. “You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours”. And this situation is not likely to change until the contracts/business stops flowing to the chinese, then you’ll see what the chinese towkays can do. They’ll fight and scream and shout and I guarantee you either one of two things will happen. The malays will relent and give in as they have in the past or they’ll tell us to get out of the country.

    That’s a guarantee!

  31. The “ban”
by the Internal Security Ministry via a directive by Internal Security Ministry’s Publications Control and Al-Quran Texts Unit senior officer Che Din Yusof to all mainstream media not to publish any news on the issue of Malaysia being an Islamic state, may I know is it legal? Don’t Parliament need to gazette it?

    Can someone please explain?

  32. If you are a strong, united, confident, competent and responsible organisation with credibility and integrity, do you go about shouting Hidup this, Hidup that!

What you see/hear is not what it is!

  33. What power-sharing in this country when all along BN component parties eg MCA, MIC, Gerakan, PPP and many others have all along been thrown scraps to be content with, to keep them occupied and duduk diam-diam!

    Game’s over.

  34. Marmitecrab:

No, the Malays are not united, which is why UMNO had to come up with the “Islamic State” statement in the first place. They have to compete with PAS on the Islamic front. Of course it is a calculated risk, and they know they risk alienating the Chinese, but like you said, they also know the Chinese are (a) not united and (b) worshippers of crumbs that UMNO can throw from the main dining table. They also know that MCA and Gerakan are so subservient that there will be no sqeaks from them, and even if there are, these can be extinguished very quickly with some sharp reprimands.

So it is all a calculated risk, one which UMNO has taken to wrest some more Malay votes from PAS.

  35. All the keris wielding guy needs to do is growl “shaddup” and we see the so-called non malay leaders scampering all over with tails between their legs. These are the type of people who now represent the non malays.
The future of this country and its minority people is very bleak indeed with the dominant race becoming more and more thuggish and arrogant.

  36. Where is the Prime Minister?

Still with his Badawi-clan in ozzie land and running the country on auto-pilot when we are all so heated up back home? Perhaps he has ‘sub-contract’ his various ministries to the boys on the 4th floor!

  37. MCA is no longer relevant in BN. UMNO knows this, thats why they play the racial card all along. Malays comprise 65% of the population…thats close to two thirds. If all else fails, BN still have majority Malay support via UMNO. The last week of speeches is testament to this. The question is, what is MCA/MIC and the other component parties going to do about it. Are they just going to sit back and let UMNO do all the taliking?

At the moment, the situation is tense. UMNO is calling for an Islamic State, against the fundamentals of our Constitution. The non-Islamic component parties are silent/divided but too timid to response. Are we heading into twilight zone?

  38. Dear Toyol,

We are in the twilight zone (by my definition at least) I say this because we as a country have lost our goals, what our forefathers set out to do 50 years ago have fallen by the wayside, plans hijacked by self serving individuals who got rich by promoting racial polarisation, even then there was still hope in the Mahathir Era when he envisaged Malaysia being a developed nation, alas Vision 2020 is now only an abandoned car project, half past six bakun dam, lots of office space in MMSC, a half bake soccer team and many more ( i wouln’t want to bore you). We herefore are back to square one, with the loser politicians responsible for the calamities trying to convince their respective races that they are fighting hard!!! (for what?) Well the bottom line is this, we shall refuse to be baited and will speak loudly in voting such donkeys out, come the election

  39. Cheap votes for elections are up for grabs. And it’s up to people like KJ, Hishamuddin and even minister-wannabe like Mat Taib to grab them fast. To an ordinary Malay/Muslim, they have been thinking that Malaysia is an Islamic country all along because Malaysia’s population is predominantly Muslim. They couldn’t care less about what was written in the Constitution. By reiterating the fact that it is a Islamic country is going to make those three chaps champions of the race and religion, and if that translates into precious votes..they will have the last laughs

  40. Easy handouts/benefits, get rich quick NEP and exploiting fear and insecurity of race and religion are constantly used to get support/vote for the political parties.

This is most narrow and irresponsible leadership and governance of the country.

  41. Dear Sotong,

Hear Hear, however since when have they been bothered about responsibility and good governance? They are more worried about their pockets, it would serve them well to think about what others will remember them by, if they are remembered at all…

  42. Malaysia is NO different from China now! It’s very obvious that the government governs according to principle of a communist! Worse still, the government in Malaysia is obviously RACIST and RELIGIOUSLY EXTREME!

They have no intention to live with the non-muslims and non-bumiputra! Declaring Malaysia as an Islamic country proves it all. Cmon, why yould one still vote for MCA, SUPP, Gerakan etc.? They are part of BN, means they endorse UMNO’s claim!!!

  43. The NEP policy is to divide the race and give them a blank check to plunder the country in the name of restructuring societies to deceive as many Malays as possible by making them believe that all Malays have special position in this country. In reality it is only UMNO and its cronies who are having all the special privileges.

Now they are playing on The Islamic State cards to check the advancement of PAS which had been been a threat to them in the 1999 elections and after finding it as a useful tool by TDM, it has become now a flag bearer for UMNO to shout the “Islamic State” slogan every now and then to draw the attention of the Malays especially the extremist because UMNO has to appear more holy than PAS to be more appealing to the extremist group of Malays. UMNO knows they are playing a dangerous game and yet they choose to play with it. I am sure they can predict that PAS will up the ante on this and after a few ups on each others, Malaysia will end up like Pakistan which is currently undergoing a turmoil.

  44. Come to think of it voting PAS is not such a bad idea after all. Voting MCA, MIC or Gerakan is the same as voting UMNO and why should we keep on voting these people who keep discriminating against us and who bully us into submission and even try to change the spirit of the constitution to suit their agenda.

  45. Well its so sad that all this MCA,MIC,Gerakan and PPP.say nothing and do nothing.Just like a dog when u ask them to sit they sit.hehehhe .Let me tell u all people soon its going to be to late if we all malaysian do nothing bout that .Show them who is the BOSS.vote them out.WE are MALAYSIAN FOR ALL.

  46. Godfather,
I totally agree with you that Marmitecrab has erred in thinking Malays are united. In fact PAS and UMNO are earnestly competing to impress the muslim community that one is more islamic than the other. The sad and sorry state of affairs that this country has descended into has to do with the fact that the non Malay communities as a whole are also crumb pickers, not just the MCA, GERAKAN or the MIC leaders.
And also we keep on reminding ourselves that the Malays make up more than 50% of the population whilst the non Malays non Muslim
make up to about 38%.The truth is that we do not see beyond our noses, get angry enough to say enough is enough and proceed to vent our disgust thro the ballot box.The fact is we are a down right corrupt nation. All UMNO has to do is to throw a few crumps and we get hooked line and sinker.
On the flip side, take a look at the black americans. In the cotton fields of America, the blacks can be slapped, kicked and their women raped if the whites so wish for they think it is their goddamn right to do so.The Ku Klux clan whenever they like would lasso them, tie them to the back bumper of their cars and drag them thro the streets of Southern USA. Look at them today–many of them are in the seats of power particating in the affairs of America as equal partners.Barak Obama even has a fair chance to be the next US President and only 13% of Americans are black Americans according to 2005 US population census. Now don’t tell me in America it is easier. The black Americans are angry enough to put up a fight to earn their place as rifgtful citizen of America.
