Last chance for MCA to change history for the better

FEB 7 — As the curtain comes down on the MCA and its demise as a force in Malaysian politics, Malaysians are being treated to demonstrations of desperate behaviour by the MCA top brass to show that they are still relevant.

The latest is the attempt by MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai to reach out to Chinese voters by offering health tips for the Chinese New Year season.

No doubt the book launch speech by the health minister has been widely reported in the mainstream media. His backroom boys will probably be flattering the minister about how clever he is in referring to the lucky number of 8888 and its association with wealth and health in reaching out to the Chinese electorate.

But will it work on the Chinese electorate?

What Chinese voters want

Will Chinese and Malaysian voters be easily swayed by such gimmicks which can be expected to intensify as we get closer to the elections?

My view is that it will not.

In fact, even MCA insiders realise that the Chinese electorate is a more sophisticated and discerning one.

MCA veteran Woon See Chin, a former deputy education minister, for example, has admitted that generous handouts such as the RM200 smartphone rebate and RM500 1 Malaysia People’s Aid would not help win back the support of disenchanted young Chinese voters.

His observation that “Chinese youth are more independent” and that “they don’t rely on any political parties; some of them have never received any financial aid from the government” is true not only for Chinese youth but also for the majority of the Chinese and Indian voting population.

What will the Chinese (and other Malaysian) voters be influenced by?

Chinese voters want change. They want a party that can stand up to Umno and its almost 60 years of self-serving politics of racism, cronyism and opportunism that have damaged our economy, ruined our educational system and made the future darker for all Malaysians, especially for non-Malays.

Make a stand against the top dog

How to change our system? I have been told that guidance to the MCA is akin to casting pearls before swine and that the leopard will never change its spots. Nevertheless I would like to offer some advice to MCA leaders and its supporters for the coming elections.

According to feedback obtained from the Chinese community and through my participation in political ceramahs and interaction with the man in the street, the MCA and Gerakan will be wiped out as political parties in the elections. This is because few if any of its candidates will be able to win enough votes to be elected even in Umno-dominated constituencies.

This worst-case scenario is based on two important considerations:

1. the Chinese view that Umno cannot and will not change its hardline “ketuanan Melayu” and “ketuanan Islam” ideology and policies which have scarred our nation and ruined the future of most Chinese youth

2. the general view that the MCA will never be allowed by Umno to be anything but a toady and boot-licking party

Faced with an impending disastrous performance in the elections which could mark the end of the party, there is only one option that is available for the party and its members to pursue between now and the elections.

This option is that MCA leaders and members should not support the Barisan Nasional. Of course, it is too late for the party as a whole to take action and make the momentous decision to get out of the BN coalition. This historic decision should be left to another time.

But in the meantime, individual leaders and members can signal their disapproval with the way that Umno has been running and ruining the country and their disgust with the way in which it has treated the MCA as a lap dog. This can be done by abstaining from taking part in the elections and by not supporting BN during the elections.

Such a decision may be difficult for the likes of the top MCA leaders and central committee members who have profited from lucrative contracts, commissions, datukships and tan sri-ships. But for the party’s middle-level leadership, this is the right time to shift their allegiance to the opposition coalition and for them to work to ensure a Pakatan Rakyat victory.

Their contribution to ousting Umno from power can come in many ways such as urging constituency members not to vote blindly for BN candidates; secretly providing support to opposition candidates; alerting the NGOs monitoring the elections of the BN’s dirty tricks and likely abuses; dragging their feet on being co-opted as a BN election worker; etc.

Unlike the party’s leaders who have accumulated so much wealth by being cronies of Umno, the middle-level and grassroots leadership have gotten crumbs while being kicked around. Only by working for change will they be able to win back the respect of the Chinese community and convince their friends and children that they have not sold out the Chinese community by being members of the MCA.

The coming election provides the last chance for MCA leaders and members to change the course of history — positively. I and millions of Malaysians urge them — make a stand for change by working to ensure that the BN loses and for the opposition to take over Putrajaya.

Only in this way can the MCA — a thoroughly politically discredited and morally bankrupt party — make amends for the harm that it has inflicted on Chinese and the country.

  1. MCA, to save your dignity as Chinese, please withdraw from the racist UMNO coalition. Go to pasar in the morning and conduct your survey there, they would give you the same answer. Shame on you Mr CSL!

  2. I was fully convinced and in agreement with Mr. Koon’s argument stated above. Chinese are generally independent and have been so many many years. They will not easily influenced by the hand out, but off course they will take what ever hand out the government give, as it is their right as citizen to take it.

BN has not or they simply refused to understand what really Chinese want. I believe they know what the Chinese want but they refuse to acknowledge it.

Education it on the first priority. Despite many move and gesture such as recognising TARC but the Chinese still believe BN is not sincere and it all done as fishing for votes. They have felt cheated for decades with all the promises that have not met.

They also see the possibility of an alternative government to replace BN and this belief will sure happen in the coming GE.

As of MCA, except for so hard core members who has been benefiting from its partnership with UMNO, mo body will believe it is a party that can fight for them.

Time for change and it is coming very soon.

  3. I believe from the start most of MCA and Gerakan believe that their chances of survival was not good. Their’s was not a strategy of choice but rather of no other choice they would care for.

The fact is their fortune continued to decline all along and they knew it but they kept doing what they were doing and behaving the way they behaved, being who they have always been famously described as political eunuchs, because well, they simply are don’t care for the alternative which would require sacrifice possibly great and little reward for themselves. They are opportunist, not real politicians and public servants – no different than loan-sharks, drug-pushers, illegal-vcd sellers, and illegal gambling-den operators.

They are prodigal inheritors – they will not leave their inherited house until everything is sold, money pocketed, and lost. Even the crumbs that trickle down to them until the very last day is worth it for them to hang on to no matter how humiliating and shameful because their honor and dignity, and the rights of others, is not worth their irrelevance and poverty

When they do get wiped out, they think they still have a house to go back to even then, having squirrel away something that ensure that they won’t suffer. They know nothing of shame and likely already made up excuses even before the end.

The stubborn indignity and dishonor of MCA and Gerakan politician is a shame on our community that has tolerated injustices and their indulgence for decades. Their prodigality is reminder of the failure of our community, our every own shame. Like it or not, they are part of us. our product of culture and society.

  4. Had Tan Siew Sin taken MCA out of the government instead of crawling back after losing all the important ministries, UMNO would not be able to pretend to be what it is not. We can also be sure that NEP could not have been launched.

The past 40 years perhaps created 40 Chinese families who benefited through stealing with UMNOputras, millions Chinese had no choice but to leave the country. When will MCA members ever think why they join the party in the first place? Why do they stick with the party when voting for MCA is voting against their interest?

  5. Agreed.
Those who are members of the ruling party but now opt for change must abstain from standing for any seats in the coming elections.
And definitly not under the banners of the PR!
Because, once they are voted in in this way, they will definitely be tempted to hop back over to their former party.
By abstaining to contest in the coming GE AND ENCOURAGING THEIR FOLLOWERS TO VOTE FOR THE PR, THE CHANCES OF UNSEATING UMNO/BN WILL BE BETTER.

  6. Mr. Koon, you have given them a high order which the current leaders will NEVER DO. They have no principle nor any substance to think independently. Over the past 30 years or so, they have had depended on crumb wiped off the table for their own survival. At worst, they get wiped out after the 13th GE but for the last 60 days or so, they still wanted to enjoy the left-over! MCA should not be helped to revive; just BURY IT!
