Would Opposition leaders have let off Mahathir for two decades if he had broken his assurance before Operation Lalang that they would not be arrested under the ISA?

Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has maintained what he said in Tom Plate’s new book “Doctor M: Operation Malaysia – Conversations with Mahathir Mohamad” that he had “actually met all of the opposition members (beforehand) and assured them that they would not be arrested”.

Following my rebuttal that I had never met Mahathir and that he never gave me any assurance that I would not be arrested before the launch of Operation Lalang on Oct. 27, 1987, Mahathir repeated yesterday: “I met Kit Siang and his friends as a group”.

He said he felt some of the political figures did not need to serve detention at that time.

“It was the police who took action against them and I accepted their decision.”

I had challenged Mahathir to name the Opposition leaders he had met and given assurance that they would not be arrested – now reduced to “Kit Siang and his friends as a group” –but subsequently overruled by the police in the Operation Lalang crackdown, but Mahathir has not been able to name anyone of the others.

The simplest rebuttal to Mahathir’s claim would be to pose the question – Whether the Opposition leaders to whom Mahathir had given an assurance that they would not be arrested in an Internal Security Act (ISA) crackdown would have let off Mahathir for two decades if he had broken his solemn word to us before Operation Lalang of no ISA arrests?

We would have ridiculed him as a impotent Prime Minister and Home Minister at the beck-and-call of the Police – which everybody know was not true.

Former Inspector-General of Police Tun Hanif Omar has come out to corroborate Mahathir’s version of Operation Lalang, claiming that “it was entirely the police’s decision”.

If so, can Hanif explain why the UMNO Youth leader at the time, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, was not arrested in the Operation Lalang crackdown as it was the Umno and Umno Youth leaders who were chiefly responsible for creating the racial tensions of October 1987?

Or was Najib in the police arrest list but overruled by Mahathir?

I did pose this question to Mahathir after my release together with Guan Eng from Kamunting Detention Centre on April 19, 1989 – the last two Operation Lalang detainees to be set free after 18 months of detention.

Both of us were released without conditions but there were 16 former Operation Lalang detainees who were subject to restrictive conditions relating to freedom of speech and movement depriving them of their civic and political rights.

In my meeting with Mahathir on 6th May 1989, I had asked Mahathir point-blank why Najib had not been detained if Operation Lalang was allegedly to deal with the racial tensions in October 1987, referring in particular to the Umno Youth rally at Jalan Raja Muda Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on 17th October 1987 with banners displaying slogans: “MAY 13 HAS BEGUN” and “SOAK IT (KRIS) WITH CHINESE BLOOD”.

There was no proper answer from Mahathir, only the typical illogical Mahathir retort: “Who asked you to provoke him?”

Mahathir never told me that it was the Police who wanted to make the Operation Lalang arrests and that he had no choice as Home Minister but to go along.

Despite Hanif’s collaboration, nobody would believe that Mahathir was not the mastermind of the Operation Lalang arrests to consolidate his power position in Umno.

It is public knowledge at the time that Hanif was on his way out, and the man who had the full confidence of the Prime Minister was the then Special Branch Director, Tan Sri Rahim Noor, whom everybody expected to take over as IGP after Hanif. May be, an explanation from Rahim Noor might be more appropriate than from Hanif.

Be that as it may, what is intriguing is why Mahathir is trying to rewrite history as to who was responsible for the Operation Lalang arrests – some two decades after the darkest chapter of human rights in Malaysia.

This is not the first time that Mahahtir had passed the buck of responsibility for Operation Lalang to the police. He did it the first time in August 2006 and I had immediately rebutted him at the time.

  1. Jesus said..”By the fruits you will know them. Every good tree bears good fruits…and every evil tree bears evil fruits”
Mahathir is the devil reincarnated and is the evil tree in Malaysia producing millions of evil fruits.
The many sinners following this devil reincarnated person for 22 years are bearing the evil fruits…and no matter how much we try to persuade change of hearts…the evil deeds are deeply rooted into millions.
It evil and devilish man have chosen Najib.. for the task to keep his throne secured forever.
The events performed by Najib…since after 12th GE…are so many and contradicting each other..that we now know the Devil has son who is a great liar.
Let true Malaysian Muslims take inspirations from Egyptians and be saved.
If Muslims cannot save Muslims in Malaysia…who can save them?

  2. And back to the post proper….Mahathir lies freely and easily.
His thick skin face is getting thicker and thicker …because he is going all out to save his family ill gotten fortune…and so are all those supporting him.with same intentions and purposes…besides fearing court cases to be convicted and jailed.
    Lim Kit Siang have spoken.
All Malaysians need to know are these two people…who is a liar and who is not.
If Lim Kit Siang tells lies ..he would have been dead in jail long ago.
You think the government is so kind to LKS to let him speak evil against Mahathir..and get away with it?
People Power is what makes the government afraid to aroused and confront with…that stands solidly with LKS.
That sums up all the munbo jumbo of Malaysians nonsensical politics.

  3. //He said he felt some of the political figures did not need to serve detention at that time.

“It was the police who took action against them and I accepted their decision.”//

That acceptance turned the police’s decision into his decision. And that acceptance is also a clear acknowledgement that he is the boss of the police force. Otherwise what business has he got to accept the police’s decision? Or will he be so ridiculous as to say that his acceptance meant nothing to the police?

  4. He will do anything to hold on to power……took a huge risk for narrow and short term gain for himself and his party at the great expense of the country.

The damage to our country is permanent and long term with far reaching consequences. Without real and urgent reform, don’t think we could recover quick enough to minimize further damage.

  5. His cries reminds me of James Brown act with his robe..copied by Micheal Jackson too.
Mamak easily forget. He remembers nothing.
He is on to the road with no return.
There he can talk to himself forever.

  6. ///This is not the first time that Mahahtir had passed the buck of responsibility for Operation Lalang to the police. He did it the first time in August 2006 and I had immediately rebutted him at the time.///

  7. Can you imagine Mahathir can remember events happened 22 years ago and accused LKS as a liar?
Yet he cannot remember anything when questioned 14 times..on Lingam case..the answer is ‘I don’t remember”….14 times.
Why can’t this man shut his mouth and stop fooling Malaysians.
    His tricks are outdated.

  8. after 30 years ruling and corruption, the Egyptian people overthrown Mubarak.

after 30 years ruling and corruption, Mubarak Sarawak is still endorsed by Najip to lead the next election.

Can we believe in this kind of regime? Najip did not learn from the Egyptian experience

  9. TDM can twist facts at his own fancy as ‘king cobra’. NR is therefore, not fit to be PM for his arrogant action to pretend as ‘hero’ for the Malay. but at least openly admit his past mistake and make apology to all fellow Malaysian.

  10. for the past few months, i have been observing what Lee Kuan Yew and Dr Mahathir been airing to the public.

one commands my utter respect as a visionary and statesmen; the other one proved that his greatest selling pitch during his administration, has been a big farting lie for years…and in his own class as one who contradict himself and possess unsurpassed ability to lie with a straight face

  11. Typical of MMK, he thinks he can fool ppl all d time by telling lies n more lies, 4 he believes dat if he persists with d lies, lies will bcome truth, dat’s how he survived as PM 4 >20yrs
Y his daughter MM so quiet on her old man’s lies n evil deeds?

  12. “why Najib had not been detained if Operation Lalang was allegedly to deal with the racial tensions in October 1987, referring in particular to the Umno Youth rally at Jalan Raja Muda Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on 17th October 1987 with banners displaying slogans: “MAY 13 HAS BEGUN” and “SOAK IT (KRIS) WITH CHINESE BLOOD”.

There was no proper answer from Mahathir, only the typical illogical Mahathir retort: “Who asked you to provoke him?”

Mahathir’s statement is proof enough! “Who asked you to provoke him”. In other words, Mahathir confirmed that Najib did hang out the banners: “MAY 13 HAS BEGUN” and “SOAK IT (KRIS) WITH CHINESE BLOOD”.

Hail Adolf Najib. Sie sind verruckt!
Herr Doktor Mahathir, Sie sind krank und verruckt sein!

  13. Dr. M seems healthier these days. Thank God for that, but I hope and pray that someone would chain his mouth and cap it with a large padlock. The country is ripe for a new era where all the races live in harmony respecting each other. This talk about Ketuanan Melayu should go. It was never there when we Malayans/Malaysians gained independence; it should never be here now. Keep denying UMNO and its stooges (MCA, MIC etc.) the two-third majority and undo all this “ketuanan” and “kesinambungan” nonsense. The Malay dilemma could have been solved by other means than robbery of the rights of the Non-Malays. In this regard, PKR must show the way nationally, as it has been doing in Penang, Selangor, Kedah and Kelantan.

  14. Mamakthir said that he would migrate when Anwar Ibrahim takes over as Prime Minister. He is afraid that he had to migrate and that is why he said many things to urge Malays to retain UMNO in power. He suddenly remembers that in 1964 he boasted that he did not need Chinese votes and lost his seat in Kedah in a dominant Malay constituency, and thus he tries now to pretend that he was human sometimes hoping that some non-Malays would be stupid enough to vote for BN in the coming GE 13. But his remarks raise more questions than answer.

His statement that Najib was spared the ISA because he was provoked confirmed that he practiced double standards, and he applied the laws selectively. If that is how law in Malaysia should be applied, then those who are provoked by government policies discriminating against them would have the right to act just like Najib did.

Either Malaysians were stupid or unfortunate to have a person of that caliber head the government for two decades. That is no wonder too after having found huge oil resources from the 1970s when the country was rich enough to finance all the students through tertiary education Mamakthir sticked to implementing racial quota, and in some case a 100% reservation for Malays only. That divide and rule racist policies gave him the excuses to treat national coffers as his piggy bank. That policy of discrimination under NEP sent millions of well educated non-Malays, and now Malays, overseas resulting in Malaysia falling into low income trap.

Najib said to the Chinese community that distribution is not as important as increased in earning. Sounds sensible if there is no NEP. But he would sing a different tune in the company of Ibrahim Ali Katak and Mamakthir. The 30% demand has been on for 40 years and it should have an end date now. For that Najib should order an accurate accounting on the status of the actual equity shares owned by Malays. Should there is any shortfall which EPU was good at lying Najib should deployed Petronas funds to buy shares until the 30% target is achieved. He should then distribute the shares to Malays and declare NEP achieved success. Only when NEP is removed would Malaysians overseas consider returning to rebuild this country. Is Najib waiting for the person who overstayed his welcome in this world to depart before he would dare to order a proper accounting of Malays ownership in equity shares vis-a-vis the 30% target?

  15. Most leaders will abuse their cows, pigs and dogs, after uniting their thoughts…..this one is no different.

As most Malays worked for/depend on the government, the Malays are becoming a government without society….this is most unhealthy environment.

  16. The mamak racist cum liar opens his big old mouth again, but he harps on the same old tune saying how Malays lose their power through Umno,Pas and PKR.This Indian origin devil never talks about corruption, cronyism, racial discrimination, public safety, poor public transport, low standard public health service. It is a pity that he was given the opportunity to rule for 22 years and the country still ended divided by race and religion, remained under developed and still backward in many fields despite endowed with many rich natural resources. And now this old fox still wants to disunite , divide and plant hatred among the people by spilling racist remarks day in and day out. Some of you might shed ‘tears’ when he kicks his bucket but many others would instead hit a drum, strike a gong , clash the cymbals and fire crackers to jump for joy.

  17. chow kay-leng-ngah-teh. he is the biggest hypocrite in whole of malaysia. this bugger can tell lies with a straight face even though he knew people will not believe it.

as he aged, he is becoming more of a sly snake with no shame. no shame in deceits, corruptions, stir up racial discord and all things negative to this country. this is his only goal in life to make sure he doesnt get investigated for his ill gotten wealth.

as much wealth he is try to accumulate, his health will betray him.

  18. this bugger cannot speak without looking and thinking about his skin color for a moment. everytime he opens his sak-dik mouth, all sorts of poison, deceit and discord pour out from his stinking heart.

this is a man full of jealously, vengeance and hatred. he is showing all that to protect his ill gotten wealth and mismanagement.

  19. Why doesn’t anyone ask the snake what is his definition of “racial equality” ? Based on his support for Perkasa, etc, I would suspect that “racial equality” to Mamakthir is the continuation of a handicap system until the UMNOputras are on an equal footing with the non-bumiputras.

What I can’t understand is that the minority BN parties all seem to jump up with joy at the Michiavellian comments of this snake when it suits them, and keeps mum when the snake openly attacks the meritocracy that we all require to advance the country.

  20. Hanif n MMK, both their NOSES grow LONGER each time they open their mouths
If their claims were true, then M’sia is a polis state, polis more powerful than ministers
    Were their actions constitutional?
Was MMK, as Home Minister, incompetent n negligent in his job?

  22. ONLY 1 person must be lying:
Either Tun Mahathir or ordinary YB Lim Kit Siang.

Now, for the record, Tun M has been lying for 22 years whilst in public office.

Can anyone point out 1 lie by Lim Kit Siang?

Ok, I guess you guessed who is that ONE BIG LIAR – Tun M. (Applause). Tun M never met DAP leaders before that draconian ISA sweep.

One basic lesson Tun M has not learned is that when he has dugged enough dirt to cover up one lie after another, finally he exposes the sh*t pot, that cesspool which covered up all the faeces of all the years. And I thought he was old enough to know that honesty is d best policy.

  23. Mamakthir said that a new Malay dilemma is that Malays would be called racist if they talk about Malay rights. There is no such term as Malay right officially recognized in any legal documents. United Nations talks about basic human rights, and Malays certainly have a share of it. But Mamakthir insinuated that Malays have more rights than other Malaysians in Malaysia, and that is plainly untrue. He can certainly claim anything he likes, like he is Malay, but others have the right not to recognize him. Malays certainly have the dilemma that in their name and honour Mamaks steal, and Mamaks justify it on the continued weaknesses of Malays.

True Malay dilemma started when they accepted the author of Malay Dilemma as the hero of Malays without checking into the background of the person and his intention. Since then, by accepting Mamaks as Malays based on the classification allowed by the constitution instead of the tahu-sama-tahu who real Malays were, Malay community gained a fraction more votes but they allowed Mamaks the opportunity to be wrongly placed into the classification of the needy group. It is true that non-Malays suffered having to shoulders the ‘free-lunch’ given to newly minted Malays from Mamak community, but what is provided to Malays under article 153, and later NEP had been hijacked by Mamaks. So Melayu tulen actually lose out competing for political connection in the legalized corruption under the aegis of NEP, than they would have faced against all Malaysians if competition was based on merits. What is more when Mamakthir controlled the community for 22 years as UMNO Chief?

Malays who have been enlightened to the fact that the so-called NEP was actually a scheme by those in the corridor of power to steal in their name wanted out. They are not at liberty to do so because they are called traitors to Malays by the same person who was not even Melayu Tulen. Further, Mamakthir accused those enlightened Malays who wanted to stop institutionalized corruption in the country for selling out Malays interest. Mamakthir tried to convince Malays that running a government is similar to running a secret society and that only UMNO which has shown how it could bully non-Malays was the guarding angel for Malays. Mamakthir also brainwashed Malays into thinking that high income status like Singapore which is corruption free was bad for Malays because Malays in Singapore cannot claim ketuanan Melayu. To Mamakthir Malays are born to fight others so that a few so-called leaders can laugh to the bank, like Mubarak of Egypt. Malays, especially those in the rural areas in whose names the so-called affirmative actions are created, are actually voting to support UMNO, which is responsible in making this a low income country, to be perpetually in the poverty trap. That is the most serious Malay dilemma which Mamakthir would certainly try to hide.

Malays in the rural areas would have been happily living their lives using modern amenities to help them earn their livings, and lived out more meaningful lives with knowledge gained from education. Mamakthir brainwashed them into thinking that work in agriculture was a low-class job, just like driving as an occupation was looked down by Mamakthir. Mamakthir created the division of occupations into despicable and noble groups. To him, while collar jobs such as sitting in government offices were to be preferred. That could be because he still carries with him the gene of caste system, originated in India.

In the name of helping Malays through education, and as a way to show that Malays are favoured over non-Malays, the government ignored article 153 and made some education institutions reserve 100% of their seats for Malays. Malays as a political grouping is no different from other ethnic groups where not all the people are born to benefit from rigorous academic training. But the process of making Malays to endear them to UMNO through education had political returns. Thus creative marking systems were developed and eventually there were tens of thousand of unemployable graduates among the Malay community. These people could have a free choice to select their career path without having to waste first a few years in the universities. Besides, many such graduates had to hide their degree to obtain a job in the private sector.

Malays students who had better qualifications and the aptitude for tertiary educations invariable got scholarship to study overseas. They have fair opportunities to befriend the children of UMNOputras and have knowledge of one another’s strength and weakness. For Malays from ordinary families, they get to experience the pains of nepotism only on their return. It is hurting to realize that job opportunities for career development, whether in government or GLC had to be fought with political connections. There are now numerous Malays who chose to stay away overseas. The Malays are experiencing the pains of non-Malays who have to emigrate because of NEP, and they are suffering the same pain at NEP said to be helping them. That is Malay dilemma which individually they can do nothing to change.

All told, Mamakthir created real dilemma for Malays after having fictitiously created it in a book. It is a dilemma whether Malays should have traded their ‘special position’ to accept opportunist who said to fight for their cause but ending up fighting them. Moreover Mamakthir as Mamak gains the right to insult Melayu Tulen.

  25. Mamakthir said that he has many ideas and given a chance he would implement them. That implies that Najib is not good as a PM. It gives the impression that he wants his son to be PM so that he could contribute, to make this country accelerate on its path to Zimbabwe.

Based on his statement this year alone, Malaysia would burn if he came back as PM.

  26. Sdr Lim, don’t be too sure the 1987 Operation Lalang is the “darkest chapter of human rights in Malaysia”. Judging by the undercurrents, the 1987 operation lalang would not be the darkest or the last one. They will continue to instigate and provoke until they get some results in their favour. How can we ever trust a guy who is a tanah melayu fasc!st one day and a liberal wanting racial equality the next day. Lee KY has written three memoirs and his life is an open book for others to praise or criticise. Why has this guy not written one page about himself since he retired? I am sure it is not due to his humility or modesty. This guy can’t even write one page without lying or indulging in baloney. Come on, 22 years as PM, are there not something worth put on record?

  28. Cinapek is right is right that you should not waste further time arguing with him (beyond rebutting that he had not met and reassured opposition members that they would not be detained).

With regard to your point – why would Opposition leaders let him off for 2 decades had he really assured them that they would not be arrested under ISA – he would just (in customarily illogic manner) dismiss that as attributable to them knowing and confirming what he earlier said about police and not himself being responsible for their arrests! (Just like when you asked him why not also NTR and he said that’s because you “provoked” him!)

A PM (as head of government) is always accountable for what the police do. So he could not exonerate himself for Operation Lallang.

What is being argued here is more on the personal level of motivation: people believe he orchestrated it to buttress his position in intra party power struggles whereas he says he’s just following what police (in particular SB) recommended.

There’s no point arguing about something like motives and underlying intention that either way could not be verified or contradicted objectively – especially so when everything is mixed in a combination of some facts and some exaggeration and interpreted in a way to clean his record in the face of what Tom Plate asked..

Likely the police did give an assessment to him as Home Minister that in their recommendation (whether right or wrong) the situation was tense and ought to be diffused by putting all parties contributing to the communal faceoff under ISA to cool off and it was up to him to decide who should go in and who should be protected.

According to Wikipedia on Operation Lallang “the pundits have it that the Prime Minister had to have a quid pro quo for cancelling the UMNO rally. Hence the arrests of prominent Chinese politicians” – including one or two from his own BN component parties like MCA (eg MCA Vice President and Perak Chief Chan Kit Chee) and UMNO (eg Pasir Mas Ibrahim Ali (now enjoying his patronage in Perkasa) and UMNO Youth Education Chairman Mohamed Fahmi Ibrahim…

I am sure any PM including him would listen to an extent what the police said because these men provide the “intelligence” and information on the ground that affects the PM’s decision whether to arrest or not arrest, whether to retire early or not retire, whether it is propitious to call an election or not call it. However to suggest that the final decision is not for the PM to make is hard to swallow for a leader like TDM. (Its more believable for the case of his subsequent successor when he could not get them to accept IPCMC in toto).

    Mahathir’s interview

    http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/2/13/nation/8056686&sec=nation

///KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the New Economic Policy must continue even though many Malays had misused the opportunities given to them, such as selling off their business licences and contracts.

The former prime minister said that if the Malays had made the best use of those opportunities, they would have attained not only 30% of the nation’s wealth but much more than that.

He said the NEP had to be continued because the Malays had yet to attain the quota, but they should continue to strive to avoid becoming the most backward race in the country.///– The Star

Why should non-Malays continue to bear the brunt of suffering discrimination when government actions have provided sufficient opportunities to allow Malays to surpass the target of 30% equity capital in the corporate sectors. Mamakthir has cunningly used the term 30% wealth which was never the NEP target. The target was to have Malays participating in commerce and industries, and the 30% equity capital was used as a proxy by the EPU to measure Malays’ participation. Wealth was never a target as a measure of economic participation. Mamakthir conveniently chose whatever he felt easy to justify that NEP target had not been achieved. He mentioned properties in urban areas are of higher values than rural areas, and he certainly forgets that one sleeps away their interest paid to the bank more in urban areas than in rural areas. In an interview with BBC some years back while he was still in power, he mentioned that there were still Malay drivers employed by Chinese tycoons and thus NEP had not achieved its target. So to Mamakthir the target of NEP success depends on his wishes. It just goes to show that Mamakthir and the bunch of UMNO leaders nurtured by him have no sincerity to honour the promise made by Tun Razak that NEP was for 20 years, and that the 30% was an indicator that NEP aims for. Now the 30% has been used by UMNO to place it on any issue and to declare that NEP is still needed. Further, UMNO lies with statistics in the computation of Malays ownership of equity share capital. Relevant statistics such as ownership of lands and commercial activities by FELDA, which have been created by government funds counted for nothing for Malays in EPU data series. Clearly UMNO goes through all venues to make NEP permanent.

///“The Government will safeguard our position, but there will come a day when it will not be able to defend national policies,” he added.///– The Star

National policies are formulated by the government for the benefits of the people. In a democracy, voters choose the government based on the policies. Mamakthir obviously has his mind fixed on implementing government policies aims at bully a sector of the population to give incentives to the beneficiaries in the majority and yet winning enough votes retain power in forming the government through the pseudo-democratic voting system in the country.

///Dr Mahathir was delivering a keynote address at a symposium on The Malay Dilemma: Perspective and Conclusion, organised by the Persatuan Alumni Pemimpin Mahasiswa Aspirasi Malaysia at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

To a question from the floor on why the NEP should be continued when he had admitted that there were abuses, Dr Mahathir said: “If you don’t give, then nobody will have it.

“But if you give, they may misuse it. So, we need to be more selective.

“It is not the policy that went wrong but the implementation.”///– The Star

It was Einstein who said that it was crazy to do the same thing over and over again and hope for a different result. But UMNO are crazy only for money, and they do the same thing over and over again so that their bank account grows. The same result gives them the excuse to continue with implementing NEP. A 20 year NEP has entered its 41 years, and counting.

///To a question whether the country’s leadership had been too greedy and whether the Chinese and Indians had been working hard while the Malays became spoilt, he said the Government could not not spoil the Malays because the opportunities were their rights.///–The Star

No where in the constitution does it say that Malays have more rights than others. The constitution of Malaya and later Malaysia recognizes only that Malays, because of their special position, needed assistance. That special position refers to a condition that can be improved upon. It was never based on ethnicity which should be fixed, though some Mamaks called themselves Malays. Somebody stated much earlier on that it would be a tragedy for Malaysia if the special position of Malays is viewed as a special right for Malays. That tragedy is the greatest when the person who harbours such misconception, purposely or otherwise, happened to be the Prime Minister of the country, and worse for over two decades. As Malaysia’s fate has it, the harms continued after Mamakthir left office, and he tries to delay his departure to the next world.

///However, added Dr Mahathir, the Malays should not rely too much on the Government.

To a question by DAP national publicity chief Tony Pua on the Government’s RM6bil allocation to buy six offshore patrol vessels for the navy, Dr Mahathir said it would not be a problem for the Government to explain.

“The cost of things have gone up,” said Dr Mahathir, who had warned the Government in his address not to get into an arms race with neighbouring countries.///– The Star

It was not arm race. It was alms race; as if the persons who have a hand to land arms contracts are poor.

///At a press conference after his address, Dr Mahathir was asked about reports that DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang had accused him of re-writing history by putting the blame on police for the arrest of 106 people under the Internal Security Act in 1987.

Responding to the allegation, Dr Mahathir was adamant that he met opposition leaders before Ops Lalang and had assured them that they would not be arrested.

“I have no reason to make the claim unless it (the meeting) had happened

I met them and assured them, but, of course, I don’t expect opposition leaders to be grateful to acknowledge anything from the Government, particularly myself,” Dr Mahathir said.///–The Star

Mamakthir might as well say that he said it so it must be true. He seems to realise that he is not popular after all.

///Lim had commented on the book Doctor M: Operation Malaysia – Conversations with Mahathir Mohamad, which revealed the former prime minister had said the 1987 crackdown was a police decision.

He also denied that Dr Mahathir had met him and other opposition members.///– The Star

The people in the country know whom to believe.

///This is not the first time that Mahahtir had passed the buck of responsibility for Operation Lalang to the police. He did it the first time in August 2006 and I had immediately rebutted him at the time.///
Here is Kit’s 10 August 2006 rebuttal against Dr. Mahathir’s claim that he never had anyone arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for political reasons:

Obviously, Mahathir is still of that old school where he believes that if you tell a lie long and often enough, people will believe the lie. This might have worked in the good old days where government is in control of the news. But in this internet age, he comes across as a bald-faced liar.

  33. He will soon go to hell, and his tongue will be pull out, for being a liar.

If he fails to apologise to DSAI and family before he kicks the bucket, he will get a black-eye in hell, plus ISA forever.

  34. The great mamak from kerala is lying through his teeth. His skin gets thicker as he grows older. To cover-up his failures he keeps fooling the kampung Malays that their counterparts are not so fortunate and are being marginalised by the government of Singapore which is a backward nation.

Kampung Malays must go to Singapore to look-see-look-see to know the mamak is taking them for fools.
