Malaysians feeling safer?

NOV 18 — Another survey has appeared to say that people are now feeling safer and that fear of becoming victims of crime has dropped slightly for the December 2009 to May 2010 period.

Right. It doesn’t take into account the four burglary cases in a guarded cul-de-sac in Bandar Sri Damansara earlier this week.

It doesn’t take into account the brazen day-light robberies and burglaries in Kota Damansara these past few months.

And that it took the police more than a few hours to turn up just to brush the crime scene for finger prints.

But TNS Research International (TNS) said the fear of becoming victims of crime has dropped slightly from 58.5 per cent in December 2009 to 55.1 per cent in May 2010.

TNS managing director Yazid Jamian said the drop in the public’s fear of crime index signifies growing confidence in the police force.

“The 3.4 per cent drop within a short time period is significant, and marks a commendable improvement as it indicates that Malaysians are now less fearful of becoming victims of crime,” he said in a press statement that appeared in The Malaysian Insider today.

TNS also said ”robbery and burglary” category of the index recorded a vast improvement, with a 10 per cent drop to 58.7 per cent this year, and “violence” had a 3 per cent improvement to 44.9 per cent. However fear of “vehicle crime” increased from 58.8 per cent in December 2009 to 62.5 per cent in May 2010.

This is nothing more than a good news festival before the impending elections.

Fact is, it sounds a bit like Tun Abdullah Badawi’s report card before his Barisan Nasional (BN) went to the 2008 general elections.

It didn’t work, did it?

Fact is more housing estates are having to handle own security, hire guards and put up barricades. It doesn’t work, does it?

Fact is also that police more reluctant to accept reports from public. They don’t work, do they?

Fact is that Malaysians are altering their lives everyday because of fear of crime. People are putting in more locks, closed-circuit or cyber-camera systems and alarm systems. Because they don’t feel safe.

And there is a real fear of crime.

So if Pemandu and any other alphabet soup committee actually believe the better crime situation in the country, they must be on magic mushrooms.

The day Malaysians don’t feel the need to engage their own security guards to guard their homes and family is the day when the tide against crime has been turned.

That day isn’t coming as soon as the next general elections. So give us a break. Spare us the good news according to surveys. Just do more to make all Malaysians feel safe.

  1. Where got safe in bolehland.My underwears,jeans,shoes,bike’s tyre ect also can get stolen quite occasionally.Not to mention lifes stolen whilst in prison,from tall building and every gomen education and civil deparment human circles.We’re in danger zone!Seriously!

  2. Sure we feel safer.

    The whole of Subang Jaya and USJ have been sectioned off and turned into gated communities, with a fence around the entire housing estates, iron gates in every back alley, security guards at the gate 24/7, ID tags for every car and guest seeking entry, and alarms in nearly every other house. Some houses even have reinforced doors.

    Of course this is in addition to the traditional iron grills that every house must now install, on every door, window and in some houses under the roof. Where we can’t leave the back door open even when a high wall has just been built around the house.

    A far cry from the days when my grandmother could leave her door open during the day. And my grandparents house did not have a gate or fence.

    So much safer.

  4. PoliticoKat…USJ is a freehold housing estate…yet turned to residents not living with free atmosphere.
    Those Guard & Gated projects in some other residential areas and in USJ….are profiteers taking advantage of the weak police force…yet the government allow that because the police are sleeping or cannot do the job well.
    In USJ…there are 2100 houses that these so call community service people are charging RM600 per year..or RM1.2 million collections if 100% join in.They distribute…snatched thieves…car thieves…houses broken in..to frighten all to pay.
    A month cost them approximately RM17000 or approx. RM210OO per year to pat security guards salaries.
    What happen to the balance each year….close to RM1 million?
    If they want toi serve the residents sincerely…these people should set up a Community Service Centre and collect around RM2O000 per month or RM10 per month per house….yet it should not be done…for it is a group that is doing the police job..which indirectly hiding the police weaknesses.
    They should organize people to stand at the police station and complaint and whatever methods to get attentions.
    The reduction of crimes are not due to G&G efforts but by the police…moving their asses to work.
    In USJ…those guys block this block that ..putting huge oil drums…making free ways to one way….and making employed foreign workers as security guards to check on us.
    Few meetings by a team of concerned residents for months have changed the situation for the better…and all are encouraged not to support profiteers..which can also be identified as con men and women.
    A Ms. Hannah Yeoh of DAP was elected for USJ by us.Lets hope she understands freedom and freehold housing estates properly.
    Some say it is the work of DAP and some say it is UMNO B to get more votes.
    I say…it is neither but a team of com people out to make money doing nothing..in the long run…..like low class gangsters collecting monthly money to protect USJ residents…..and most old folks do pay out of fear.

This safety of Malaysia survey is corruption money and political biased indeed as I really doubted MalaySai is safe …> Killing Altantuya ,Teo Beng hock etc is not a crime,…is this what Umnoputras say Why do Umno Politicians lies and accept lies??..this Umno BN morons were too obssessed with Special malay pride , prejudices and boastfulness media TV 1Malaysia slogans….etc
    Just try to walk alone at night in any point of KL will be sufficient to prove Its Horribly Unsafe even with extras corrupt-police contigents army or putting thousand of survillence cameras..
    We try to shunt Malaysia on our yearly holiday tour ..rather visit Taiwan SKorean Japan or Australia.

    See how “Stolen Property” are being found “binding” and so have to be “respected” by the State Government even after they discovered it’s being done by Corruption!

  14. What survey is this that says that Malaysians feel safer, signifying growing confidence in the police force, which is contrary to felt experience, anecdotal evidence and ordinary perception?

    The survey was reported by Bernama (Nov 18th) as being conducted by TNS Research International (TNS), “the world’s largest custom market research specialist.”

    Correction : the survey was done not by TNS Research International (TNS) per se (touted the world’s largest custom market research specialist) but I believe by TNS Research International Malaysia with the word “Malaysia” omitted!

    This is evinced by Bernama’s revelation that TNS findings were reported by “its managing director, Yazid Jamian”.

    Yazid Jamian is managing director of TNS Malaysia at level 33 Menara Multi-Purpose Capital Square KL – and not TNS worldwide.

    Don’t know what’s exact relationship between TNS Research International and TNS Malaysia. Maybe the latter is just an affiliate but still why was the word “Malaysia” left out after “TNS Research International”?

  20. Malaysian Government is big client. (Remember APCO?) The TNS survey was conducted to evaluate the crime reduction National Key Results Area (NKRA) under the Government Transformation – per TheMalaysianInsider report 18th Nov.

    The thing about Najib Govt is that it is willing to spend money on international advisors, consultants and PR companies to manage public perceptions for political advantage!

    Financial resource is the edge it has over the Opposition in these respects.

  22. Tell me what would you guys do when whilst walking on the street you suddenly spot a group of indon / bangla looking youth some 20feet ahead?

    I would get to the other side of the street and move on. I would not want to cross their path. But rather oddly, their path happens to be on a tiny bit my land, my country – a tiny bit of jib’s land and jib’s country too.

    Jib’s got tower-power.
