Board of Directors blogs focus on how to become an effective board member and how to set the right priorities for governance and best practices. They also address specific issues for employee stock ownership plan (“ESOP”) owned companies, as well as other topics that are relevant to the board of directors generally.

Good governance means the board is curious, truly engaged in the bigger objectives of the organization and fluent in the global or market in which the company would like to make an impact. It also implies that the board is able to speak out when issues arise and is able to coach. It is a structure that can balance power in a clear way. Unfortunately it’s not always working well.

Whether because of a lack of interest or the organization’s culture or their personal personalities Board members find themselves bored and unengaged. Some board members aren’t sure what their role is. Others are aware that they’ren’t performing in the best way possible.

This article is aimed at the second group of people who have been offered or are currently taking seats on governance boards the board of directors and have difficulty being productive and engaged. This isn’t a riff on Johns and Daves this is directly related to the pathway to board posts (and other C-level positions). The article offers some building blocks to change the game. Diversity of thought is most often derived from the diversity of age, gender or ethnicity, upbringing context and experience.
