Nike is optimistic that demand will recover in the coming year, particularly in important regions such as China. Despite persistent fears of a recession in North America and macroeconomic pressures elsewhere, investors think Nike’s products command brand loyalty in a way that should support the company’s long-term prospects. Yet even with Friday’s gains, Nike stock is still down about 17% year to date. The Dow suffered a market correction between August 2015 and April 19, 2016, leading to a 2016 downturn. It began on Jan. 4, when the Dow closed 160 points lower as investors worried about a slowdown in China’s economic growth. The index had three nine-day runs, last occurring in 1955 (when there were four nine-day stretches). The Dow continuously moved higher eight months in a row (the last occurrence of this was in 1995). The slowdown comes after the European Central Bank (ECB) announced its 10th consecutive hike in its main interest rate earlier this month, pegging it at a record level of 4% to curb rising prices. The all-cash agreement will have Wonder Group pay Blue Apron investors $13 per share, a 137% premium to Blue Apron’s closing price Thursday.

This history of the Dow since the Great Depression demonstrates how stock market fluctuations reflect the natural stages of the business cycle. Following data showing the inflation rate rose in August, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 0.5%, or about 158 points, in the final session of a losing week, month, and quarter for the index. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.5% to finish the third quarter down 2.6%.

Investors in funds that track the Dow gain exposure to all the stocks listed on the index. The longest bull market in history lasted approximately 11 years, starting in March 2009 and ending in Feb. 2020. Since posting its all-time high early in 2022, the Dow has seen significant declines and rallies but has been unable to capture that high point as of July 19, 2023.

On Feb. 8, it entered a market correction when it fell 1,032.89 points to 23,860.46. But this robust start was not indicative of extreme volatility the index would face as the year progressed. First, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine saw gas prices spike sharply. At the same time, the strength in the U.S. labor market meant extremely competitive wages driving consumer demand. Both of those factors sent inflation in the U.S. soaring to record levels not seen in over 40 years. As a result, the Federal Reserve (Fed) began raising interest rates in March 2022 to slow the economy down and arrest the pace of price rise. While inflation persisted, Fed’s aggressive rate hikes stoked fears of a recession.

A bull market, or a bull run, is an extended period of rising stock prices. A bull market is the inverse of a bear market, which is a downward trending stock market. On that day, it closed at 7,286.27, a 37.8% decline from its peak. No one knew if a new bull market had begun until the Dow hit a higher low on March 11, 2003, closing at 7,524.06. The 2008 stock market crash was more dramatic than any other downturn in U.S. history. This was less than the 90% drop during the Great Depression.

As of March 2022, the Dow Jones’s all-time high at market close was 36,799.65, on Jan. 4, 2022. It reached a higher level the next day, at 36,952.65, but closed below its all-time high.

Past returns don’t matter when you’re jumping into a new investment for the first time. Salesforce’s strength has come from two key aspects of its business strategy. First, the company has established itself as an AI stock  player as it moves to offer generative AI versions of its Einstein data analytics platform, its Slack workplace communications software, and how to buy aave its Tableau reporting system. Early demand from users has been encouraging, and Salesforce is likely to keep emphasizing AI development for the foreseeable future. That put the customer relationship management software pioneer among the top performers in the Dow on Friday, and it extended gains that have pushed the stock more than 50% higher so far in 2023.

Netflix shares rose after news of a coming price hike

Although the Dow isn’t as big as the S&P 500 or the Nasdaq, neither of them has been as influential or popular enough to be the subject of a Broadway musical. During the recession around the turn of the 21st century, the DJIA fell from 11,723 in Jan. 2000 to 9,389 in March 2001, dropping 20%. The recession from 1973 to 1975 was also especially troublesome opec is associated with the trading of for the DJIA, falling 45% from its 1,051 peak in 1973 to just under 600 in 1974. The Dow also lost 26.5% during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. On Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, Lehman Brothers Holding, Inc. (an investment bank) declared bankruptcy. On Wednesday, panicky bankers withdrew $144 billion from money market funds, almost causing a collapse.

The Dow ends a long bull market on Jan. 14, 2000, in part due to the strength of the Internet business and the subsequent bursting of the dot-com bubble. But it then falls on March 7, 2000, rebounds to 11,124.83 on April 25, and falls again to 9,973.46 by March 14, 2001, beginning the 2001 recession. It then enters a period of volatility and drops to 8,920.70 after markets open following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Nike’s direct-to-consumer unit fared slightly better, with a 6% sales growth rate. Some weakness in gross margin helped contribute to lackluster results on the bottom line as well, as net income fell 1% to $1.5 billion. Earnings per share rose 1% to $0.94 due to extensive stock buybacks that lowered the outstanding share count enough to offset the company’s lower net income. For example, despite General Electric’s (GE 0.58%) pretty hefty market cap, its amazingly long run in the Dow came to an end in June 2018.

An intraday point drop is defined as the difference between the opening price (which may or may not be the intraday high) and the intraday low. This is distinguished from a point swing, which is defined as the difference between the intraday high and the intraday low. Such records that turned positive are also recorded in a separate list. The previous day close is used to calculate the net change. In early 1981, the index broke above 1,000 several times, but then retreated. After closing above 2,000 in January 1987,[42] the largest one-day percentage drop occurred on Black Monday, October 19, 1987, when the average fell 22.61%.
