About 3,000 flood victims from 20 villages in Hulu Dungun who are left with only their clothes on their backs desperately need help in terms of food and clothing as nearly 80 percent of the houses have been submerged in water.

Kampung Shukor development and security committee (JKKK) chairperson Jailina Abdullah said almost all her village folk were left with the clothes on their backs after the devastating flood struck their village last week.

“The flood this time is very bad. In some parts of the village, only the roofs of houses could be seen… we could not save any of our personal belongings as the water rose too quickly.

“Clothes, baby napkins, sanitary pads, and other necessities are desperately needed by the villagers, and we are forced to wear the same clothes every day … we don’t know whom to ask for help from as almost everyone in the village is facing the same plight,” she told Bernama today.

Jailina said it was difficult to send aid to her village as the main road leading to it collapsed last week due to sinking soil.

However, Jailina said her committee was thankful and appreciated the concern given to them by several agencies, including the Bukit Besi state assembly coordinator’s office, as well as the Terengganu Tengah Development Authority (Ketengah), and a few NGOs which had sent food supplies.

Sending additional supplies

Meanwhile, Bukit Besi state assemblyperson Roslee Daud said his office would continue to monitor and ensure that food supplies in relief centres were always sufficient.

“We have started to send additional food supplies to relief centres, more than 300 10kg-rice bags, 100 bottles of 5kg-cooking oil bottles, and several other kitchen supplies since Wednesday.

Roslee, who is also state rural development, entrepreneurship, cooperatives and consumerism committee chairperson, said the food items were distributed to all the relief centres in his constituency.

“The floods in Hulu Dungun this time are very bad and many villages are affected, so we are distributing this foodstuff as additional aid for the flood victims because we do not want them to be left without food supplies,” he said.

He said his office was also collaborating with government agencies such as the Malaysian Armed Forces, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department, and the police to send aid to the flood victims in the constituency.
