Our fate: Sub-par ministers

MAY 13 — It is telling that Nazri Aziz is considered among the more capable ministers. But on the evidence of what he has said and done, that is a backhanded compliment. A bit like saying that the one-eyed man is the king in the kingdom of the blind.

Even that is being charitable to Nazri. He is as incompetent and dense as the rest of his Cabinet colleagues. He was quoted as saying that the Bar Council’s stand on alleged police brutality was not representative of the legal fraternity because only some 1,200 lawyers out of 20,000 attended.

So should we say that the UN Security Council’s rulings are not binding on Malaysia because Malaysia is not a member? Should we say that Umno’s choice of its president and therefore prime minister of Malaysia is not valid because only 2,000 of its members out of three million members voted?
Obviously this minister does not understand the concept of representation. The Bar Council leadership were voted by members of the legal fraternity and therefore have the mandate to call for any meeting to discuss matters of public interest.

Lawyers getting beaten up by thuggish cops is a matter of interest. The quorum for Friday’s meeting was easily met. Two thousand of 20,000 lawyers is 10 per cent while 2,000 of 3,000,000 Umno members is 0.07 per cent.

So going by Nazri’s logic, Umno’s process of picking its president and by extension the PM is not representative and therefore should be disregarded.

So is this our fate? To suffer fools and accept incompetence at the highest level of government?

  1. Ideally ministers are not ‘sub-par”. Ideally every one seeks and speaks truth, sense and act according to conscience and fair play. But here no – we are a nation divided. On one side those who benefit from existing political order and would defend it tooth and nail. They’re quite large numbers. On the other side who think they do not benefit but exploited and marginalsed. Between the 2 sides it’s a mortal conflict in between. Talk of law, morals & what is right or wrong is more to justify and rationalize position in favour of one’s favoured side against the other opposite side. A situation has reached a stage where supporters of either side have given up attempt to talk sense or the truth except to advance one’s favoured side cause against the other. There is neither room for objectivity, moderation or non partisanship. Every one has to take sides because of the recalcitrance of the other. That’s our fate or where we’re leading to!…So Ministers are sub-par because they talk nonsense? Or is it they talk nonsense because they have to take the partisan position to help their side, what ever happens because of the unbearable cost and high stakes of having their side lose?

  2. Hence Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop was reported by the MalaysianInsider to have said that “Malaysia will revert to the year 1511 when the bumiputera agenda did not exist if the Barisan Nasional BN loses in the coming 13th general election…” 15ll was the year Portuguese admiral Afonso de Albuquerque subdued Malacca (Sultanate). Thats when colonialism began. So what is meant and intended to be meant is that the Opposition led by DSAI is going to revive colonialism if it wins and whittle down the Malay agenda. It is beginning of foreign intervention. It implies PR’s leader is doing the bidding of and backed by foreign powers out to colonise this county back door through local agents..So is that a sub par or above par view to put forth? It underscores the earlier point: people, even otherwise intelligent people, will talk anything to advance their own side’s against the other. They must think their audience are sub par to be receptive.

  3. They are driven to distraction and desperation by the very thought that their gravy train will be derailed by PR in the next GE!
And desperate people do desperate things!
That’s all there is to it!
    Straight forward and simple!!

  4. But if they were really that below par and sub par how come they could outwit and fool so many and keep in power to their own benefit that long to the detriment of so many others??? Which raises the question whether they are really sub par or have deliberately brought themselves to the sub par level of those whose support they can garner.

  5. YES, we got sub-par UmnoB/BN ministers, politicians n civil servants, but they r GOOD at using race n religion 2 divide n rule, 2 grab power, 2 enrich themselves, jiak pah pah

  6. In a particular training course (OBS Lumut), and in many other training courses as well, they say we must all take care of each other and we must be able to work as a team. So we put the weakest and slowest person in front to lead and the rest follow him. This way, every one survives, the team survives. Everyone is happy, happy (?).

It is now the current practice everywhere in this country. The weakest link / person leads.

We use the lowest common denominator. The leader might not the best of the lot.

So why complain? It is a fact of our life now.
