Anwar’s problems are not over yet

By Sakmongkol AK47 | 10 January 2012

Anwar has been acquitted. I don’t wish to douse the flames of enthusiasm that was evident on the faces and response from his supporters. Family members and friends were elated. I am watching out for possible landmines.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Anwar said, this present case shouldn’t be considered as a landmark case representing the independence of the judiciary. The only concession he made was to recognize the courage of the presiding judge to arrive at this particular verdict. It will be interesting to watch what happens in the coming months.

The future of Malaysia will depend on what happens within one or two weeks after the Anwar verdict. He has been acquitted. However I do not think he is out of the woods yet. Despite being acquitted Anwar is circumspect about the judiciary. His acquittal does not prove the judiciary is independent he says. Now, that is somewhat ominous. Why would Anwar say that?

Anwar knows this. He is let off the hook this time- that’s what the government MAY want the public to think. So that they can say, this is proof that the judiciary is independent. DR Mahathir says it before the sitting PM does. Dr Mahathir says Anwar’s acquittal is proof that the judiciary in independent. The information Minister said the same thing too. Finally the PM joined in saying the same thing. It’s almost like preparing the ground to justify that if Anwar is charged and convicted for some other offences, it is not possible for people to accuse the judiciary of being not independent. It is the same judiciary that acquitted Anwar in this sodomy 2 case.

What if, Anwar is charged for other offenses? And he is convicted there because the evidence is so overwhelming. Anwar isn’t able to say the judiciary is independent now because if he is indeed convicted on another instance, he can’t turn around to say, the judiciary is not independent. That would be contradictory. So despite being acquitted, Anwar can’t say the judiciary is independent.

He can be charged for making a false report about the video showing a man resembling Anwar having sex with a China doll. Having sex is not a crime but making a false report is. Anwar is charged once more because the prosecution has the omega watch, the Chinese national in their custody and the video is proven as authentic by forensic experts. Anwar can then be charged and may be found for committal.

So, he is still not out of the woods yet. Even in the present case, the prosecution can appeal. Dr Mahathir will order DS Najib to appeal. Dr Mahathir would rather have UMNO lose than allow Anwar to be PM. He knows if Anwar ascends to the chief executive office, Mahathir and all those on the same ship are finished. So Anwar must be stopped at all cost.

We must move this country beyond Anwar. Much energy and resources have been spent on the Anwar Saga. While Anwar and his supporters will shout of fitnah and of lies perpetrated, the public is also wasted with the tiring claim of conspiracy. It’s been 14 long and bloodletting years.

Anwar’s salvation actually lies in changing the government. And that is possible through the next general elections.

  1. Yes indeed. My bet, there will be Sodomy III. So watch it people! It does not matter how ridiculous things will turn out eventually because to umno, the end will always justify the means. And to umno the end inevitably will be about the termination of anwar’s political aspiration and career – that is another way of saying preserving their wealth and greedy lifestyle.

  2. /// The deputy premier says Anwar Ibrahim’s acquittal is proof of positive ‘transformations’ taking place in the country.///–Malaysiakini

That statement means that there was no independence in the judiciary system until this Anwar case after Najib had directly intervened. What have been Najib’s intervention which could be called reform?

But was it a case of judiciary independence where the judges would consider the case based on the merits, and not a case where the government wins unless the judge cares more about his own reputation despite threat to his career?

The law enforcement agencies such as the police and the Attorney General should have performed their duties without political interference. But do they?

  3. Concerning Anwar’s sodomy case…it has always been a political assassination attempts by Najib..copying Mahathir…wholesale.
Lets take the good news for Anwar as justice done…dirty politics using laws not working and Najib’s influence over judges no more effective.
It can also mean….Najib under so much pressure loosing Malaysians confidences..that he has to do something to win confidence back for UMNO b.
Jail him…Anwar will get more sympathy votes.
Free him…UMNO b dirty politicians will then say…Najib keeps his promises…this and that.
They must have calculated freeing Anwar is better.
Jail him…what if Anwar dies in jail?
I am happy for Anwar…but don’t for one moment any smart Malaysians think…UMNO b have change by leaps and bounds…for the better…totally not true.
Mhuyiddin has started to use the result to praise Najib’s leadership.
There are so many unsolved court cases..or cases that have yet see Najib take actions and bring all to court.
And when some did…it’s all for show…hoping Malaysians forget and move on.
Whether Anwar will be charge again…not important.
It’s 13th GE Malaysians are waiting and sIck of dirty politics…braggarts and crooks…roaming freely and teaching Malaysians how to be honest and noble.

  4. Didn’t Saifool make a wrongful police report alleging rape ? Didn’t Umi make wrongful police reports ? Didn’t Nallakaruppan make a wrongful police report ? The public won’t tolerate nonsensical selective persecution.

  5. More importantly, PR’s and PKR’s challenges is FAR from over. In fact, the truth is Anwar and PKR need to get make drastic game change.

Things are going PR way but its NOT enough. Winning Malay and Sabah & Sarawak votes is WAY behind schedule. The temptation is to keep talking about his case and they will attack him still. The point is to fundamentally shift the debate to that about the Malays and Sabah & Sarawak.

Its clear from survey that Peninsula Malaysia has moved away from UMNO/BN. The issue to the rest of people is whether they want to be part of it or hold back change..Its time to sell it to Sabah & Sarawak that change is within their hands, they only have to take it.
