Pakatan Rakyat MPs are the real heroes fighting for the interest of Malays and poor Malaysians

By Tony Pua

Pakatan Rakyat members of parliament have over the past 2 weeks exposed the fact that many of the goods sold in Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) were not only substandard, illegal and unhealthy, many of these products were also not cheaper than products sold in existing hypermarkets.

We were criticised by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister, Dato’ Ismail Sabri as being unfair by not comparing “apple to apple”, that is we should not be comparing 1Malaysia products with house-branded products from Tesco, Giant or Carrefour.

However, we have proven that the comparison was indeed not “apple to apple” for products such as the “oyster sauce” because the sauce from Tesco contained real oyster extracts, the 1Malaysia product had only flavouring and no oysters.

At the same time, the comparison of 1Malaysia milk powder with that of Nestlé’s Nespray 1+ demonstrated not only that the former is a far inferior product but also the fact that the latter was 24% cheaper. The 1Malaysia milk powder was short of at least 15 legally required vitamins and minerals, deficient in calcium and iron and provided a 802% overdose of Vitamin A, putting at real risk our very young children.

Instead of facing up to the problems, Dato’ Ismail Sabri has chosen to go on an inflammatory rant calling Pakatan Rakyat MPs, DAP and myself racists for allegedly being anti-Malay in our exposés.

Dato’ Ismail Sabri said on his Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1631334090) and Twitter on Tuesday 15th November 2011 that

“tony phua DAP ni masih tk habis2 menfitnah KRIM. kini dgn tuduhan tdk berkualiti. semlm isu ini tlh dijwb oleh Mydin & pembekal IKS. jelas agenda DAP yg ingin menguburkan KRIM yg rata2 supplier nya terdiri dari IKS bumiputra. Rata2 pembeli nya terdiri dari gol berpendapatan rendah bumiputra. Mydin pun bumiputra. malangnya ada bumiputra spt nurul izah & zulkifli ‘menyalak’ bagi pihak DAP..”

The racist accusations made by the Minister is not only completely baseless, it is the complete opposite of what the Pakatan Rakyat MPs are trying to achieve. By exposing the list of poor quality and illegal products which do not meet the minimum legal standards set out in the Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985, it is Pakatan Rakyat that is truly fighting for the interest of the mostly Malay consumers at KR1M as well as other poor Malaysians.

If not for our exposés, many Malays and poor Malaysians will still be consuming poor quality oyster sauce, evaporated millk, ice-cream, sardines and fruit jam sold at KR1M. What is worse, if not for Pakatan Rakyat highlighting the shocking deficiencies of the 1Malaysia children’s milk powder which resulted in the product’s withdrawal yesterday, a whole generation of Malay and poor Malaysian children might end up suffering from malnutrition, disease and poor physical development.

It is the BN Ministers like Dato’ Ismail Sabri who are more than willing to sacrifice the interest of ordinary Malays and Malaysians by giving unsubstantiated “guarantees” on the quality of KR1M products and pander to the monetary and vested interest of certain businessmen.

The fact that Dato’ Ismail Sabri’s ministry is going to subsidize the KR1M stores to the tune of RM40 million in 2012 to sell some of these products to ordinary Malaysians without first ensuring strict quality control over the products shows that BN Ministers are only keep to score political goals with KR1M. They are not at all interested in the welfare of Malaysians, especially the Malays, who will suffer the most.

  1. That they are and qualify as People’s representative….with a voice in Parliament speaking on behalf of the People…who voted them in.
UMNO b politicians.. keep fooling voters…get voted in to steal money.
    Not so easy now.

  2. Day and night…corruptions..cheating the public….lying…flip flopping are exposed.
    Najib is finished.
Now all the little napoleons…and apple polishers like Mydin…are being exposed.
All you need is go into a Mydin Supermarket and see so many inferior products sold..to actually make suckers of poor Muslims….thinking buying cheap stuffs but actually useless stuffs.
Yes poor Muslims are cheated by Mydin.

  3. I am not surprised if Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) eventually becomes the dumping ground for substandard, deleterious food products since the government is eager to help its cronies to succeed in business.

  4. “Everyday” batteries instead of “Eveready”
And so many filtered tap water call mineral water that SRIM keep close eyes.
They go round the world…looking for cheap stuffs…like rejected torch lights…clothes….where factories will part for a price below cost and they buy them.
DVD pirates buy from China ..look-a-like stuffs.
Mydin is do exactly same thing with food stuff..but not look-a-like…but inferior stuffs… that will not last… and keep fooling poor Muslims…with cheap price tags.

  5. who cares.
I said I leave for few days…and than must be more than 2 days.
    After that…I will decide.
Doc should know who are the cybertroppers in his blog..and not welcome all in…and make us as inn keeper and guard dog.

  6. “…The 1Malaysia milk powder was short of at least 15 legally required vitamins and minerals, deficient in calcium and iron and provided a 802% overdose of Vitamin A, putting at real risk our very young children….”

I am intrigued by this finding. Now why would any supplier want to deliberately overdose their milk powder by 802% ? What did they gain from it? Did they add something in there they shouldn’t have that caused this huge overdose? Or is their quality control of the production process so lousy they cannot even control the dosage of vitamin A?

If this overdose is due to the addition of something they shouldn’t have, the full force of the law should be thrown at them. Remember the tainted milk case in China not too long ago? The culprits were all slapped with hefty fines and jail sentence. We should do the same here if there is evidence of profiteering that caused this overdose.

  7. It is not deliberately overdosing the item…Cinapek.
It is a cheaper method to replace more expensive ingredients to give same results…but can be dangerous in the long run.
Have you read about the milk that one China factory supply and killed few babies..two years ago?
It was exposed too late…babies died…but China Govt. took fast actions..close the factory and got all the directors..some jailed for life….with CEO hanged.

  8. When it suits the Govt to protect the products sold by UMNO b companies…you can see they make all sorts of reasons to make sure the sincere good manufacturers cannot distribute the products….or get them distributed by their appointed agent.
It is arm twisting manufacturers to take it …or leave.
Why do you think so many International Manufacturers leave Malaysia….to Indonesia….Thailand…for cheaper labors only?
No for dirty politics they need to bow down…..which they refused….plus improved logistic and cheaper electricity.

  9. That was the normal BN minister mentality very short sighted and always carry color in their thinking.

They are still living in the world of colour and as this was the most powerful tools to get instant recognition.

The issue was very clear if the minister find that this Tony Pua could not substantiate what he has claimed he can or at least the mydin boss can bring him to court and get justice on what he has done.
