5-in-1 price hike: Fuel, sugar and gas up

Malaysiakini | 15 Jul, 10 6:19pm

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s administration has taken a politically risky manoeuvre by raising prices of three types of fossil fuels, sugar and cooking gas.

Both RON95 and RON97 grade petrol and diesel prices will be raised by RM0.05 per litre, while liquified petroluem gas (LPG) will be raised by RM0.10 per kilogramme.

Sugar prices will be raised by RM0.25 per kg.

All price increases will take effect from midnight tonight.

The breakdown of the new prices are:

  • RON 95 grade petrol – RM1.85 per litre
  • RON 97 grade petrol – RM2.10 per litre
  • Diesel – RM1.75 per litre
  • White refined coarse granulated sugar – RM1.90 per kg
  • Liquified petroluem gas – RM1.85 per kg

For cooking gas: (each cylinder)

  • 10kg – from RM17.50 to RM18.50, RM1.00 hike
  • 12kg – from RM21.00 to RM22.20, RM1.20 hike
  • 14kg – from RM24.50 to RM25.90, RM1.40 hike

It is learned that the Prime Minister’s Department intends to regulate the prices of RON 97 through a managed float mechanism.

Prices would then be adjusted monthly according to international oil prices.

Subsidy reduction plan

The statement added that the adjustment is the first part of the government’s plans to reduce subsidies for essential goods as proposed by the Performance and Delivery Unit (Pemandu).

Pemandu, a unit established under the Prime Minister’s Department, had warned that the Malaysia may face bankruptcy by 2019 should subsidies not be reduced.

Idris Jala, Pemandu’s chief executive officer, said that Malaysia risk becoming like Greece, which is now debt-ridden.

The Najib-administration had been working hard on its charm offensive to sell the necessity for subsidy reductions.

However, critics said forcing consumers to tighten their belts without the government undergoing an austerity drive was meaningless.

It must also be noted that this is the second time the federal government had increased sugar prices. On Jan 1, prices were increased by RM0.20 per kg.

  1. No Surprise cause the Rotten BN Govt is Desperate for $$$$$$.Rakyat to tighten their belts But Govt got the $$$$ to keep on Spending like there is NO tomorrow buying unsinkable submarines etc.Cut CORRUPTION and the Saving made will be more than the Subsidy.Dont Spend how to Get kick backs.

  2. When the storming of Bastille took place on 14th of July, 1789, King Louis XVI entered in his diary that day, “today nothing”. Today our government think it is another uneventful day as most of them probably have just finished their round of golf or having their rendezvous now with their mistresses or girl friends.

  3. Apparently, the BN/UMNO raised prices in order to have money for those suckers to suck off…….

The fact is high profits from high petrol exports must subsidize all daily necessities! Instead, they suck off and yet raise prices to suck more….

  4. Of all the subsidy to be withdrawn, why ‘fuel’?The effects from this increase will cause so much hardship to the raayat. Hawker food will be increased with immediate effect.
Ministers whose salary is tens of thousands, cannot feel for the man on the street, having to make ends meet with monthly income of RM800.
    Damn it.

  5. BN has quietly increase prices even though all the promises not to increase have been made. This is like all the tenders and contracts they made without open tender in ” I help you you help me” deals. BN only cares for themselves and their cronies. They have no caring for the rakyat so the rakyat have to boot them out the next election. Vote PR!

  6. The saving is said to be around RM 750 million. If they have capped PKFZ to RM 2 billion, the saving amounting to RM 10.5 billion will buy us 14 years without this increase. The service agreement for the purchase of the scorpene submarines of RM 500 million gives another 9 month. So, 28 million Malaysians pay a bit more for 15 years so that perhaps less than 28 persons can become very rich.

According to Mamakthir it was the lack of Malays super rich to match the super rich non-Malays that caused May 13. It seems rich Malays rank higher than the Rulers of the 1969 in prestige.

Najib took a ‘painful decision’ in making 28 million Malaysians suffer a higher cost of living. That must have been matched by the happiness in seeing his friend keep the service fees, and the PKFZ entrepreneurs enjoy their wealth. Najib sure knows what balances.

  7. Govts. of today have no sense of fair play or plain corrupt. They play only to win and crow that they are smart. All these at the expense of the people. Where is their God given conscience? Mark my works. If they are not careful the power of the masses will tear the leaders limb from limb as in the french revolution. Just watch the protests on TV happening all over the world.

  8. Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s administration has taken a politically risky manoeuvre by raising prices of three types of fossil fuels, sugar and cooking gas.
    =========================================================

Raising the price of fossil fuels, sugar and cooking gas will have widespread repercussions on prices of other goods. In the coming months prices of other items (e.g. food prices, transportation fees and electricity bills) are expected to rise as well.

  9. Congratulations, NR n BN! Well done!
Y only 5-in-1? Increase prices of more items!
On 1 hand, NR promised instant $$$ 2 many during each buy-election, on d other hand, NR made all 2 pay more 4 daily things
We will let NR know who r d bosses in d next GE

  10. BN: we should cut the subsidies now so that the rakyat can get used to the life without subsidies later.
I think it’s brilliant. Bury yourself before you’re dead so that you can get used to being buried forever. Simply intelligent.

  11. What is the use saving 750 million per year with these subsidies cut where you have 10 billion leakages per year as stated by NEAC.Najib is killing the rakyat softly with his songs.Anyway it’s Malaysia boleh.

  12. If they have capped PKFZ to RM 2 billion, the saving amounting to RM 10.5 billion will buy us 14 years without this increase. – Loh

Why should they? Things are different when you are on the distribution list. Hey, this is democracy, or shall i say, capitalism?

  13. Its not a price hike. Its a ‘price rationalisation’ and ‘adjustment’. Must be APCO giving them PR advice.

And gee, we are all now headed to be high income earners.

And today we learnt that the PM Department’s running cost is RM 4 BILLION. Najib must be trying to balance his books.

He must tell the missus she is consuming too much sugar thereby contributing to a shortage. Go on a diet.

  14. Yet so soon we see another wimp & fancy move of Najib without carried out an in depth study before hand.

Tomorrow we will wake up to find out that all prices of goods & services are up too. This inflationary hike will hurt the nation’s economy real bad. Every country is trying to keep inflation at the lowest and is careful about economic measures that could potentially cause inflation. Why Malaysia invites inflation???????

Why Najib wants to self inflict his nation and bring hardships to his citizens? He said the savings from the cut in subsidies will be used for Education & health but I think that is the most stupid excuse. There are better places to go for Education & health fund like not spent 100 million Ringgit on a space tourist ticket, 500 million Ringgit on submarine commission (infact why spent Billions on submarines ???) etc etc…..

  15. UMNO B knows these kind of decisions will make them loose votes.
    They have no choice.
They needed trillions to earn the 10% commission..for party to buy votes and for personal commission through cronies..in the past…still holding razor thin majority to govern .
But after 12th GE…not so easy to cheat to get huge projects approved without two third majority.
Cover ups are getting difficult and managing the country need the money…all used up with over priced various small tenders too…and massive corruptions..
Yes…CORRUPTIONS by UMNO B have empty all Depts.
The only way is to get millions fast monthly..is get the people pay more for essentials.
You will never get Najib to say..we are one of the very few riches country in the world with God gifted natural resources.
Malaysians will be programmed to think how lucky we are…that prices increased are still much cheaper that few neighboring countries…always telling half truths..to keep fooling the vast majority simple folks.
The increases are expected….under such a sickening low class hypocritical corrupted government.
    Malaysians are not surprised.
Every action has and equal reaction….and the current actions are the reactions towards a government having no money to manage the country.

  16. Fellow Malaysian..hahaha..this is just the beginning of the B end. The horror moment is still in its infancy. Today RM 100 value less than fifty ringgit compared 3-4 years ago. Devaluation is a reduction in the value of a currency with respect to those goods, services or other monetary units with which that currency can be exchanged. It specifically implies an official lowering of the value of a country’s currency within a fixed exchange rate system, by which the monetary authority formally sets a new fixed rate with respect to a foreign reference currency.
In 1997, Dr. Mahathir increasing pressure on the devaluation of ringgit resulted it rapidly loses its value. Generally speaking, our economy condition in which prices increase rapidly as a currency loses its value. It is define as hyperinflation too. It becomes visible when there is an unchecked increase in the money supply. This usually accompanied by a widespread unwillingness to hold the money for more than the time needed to trade it for something tangible to avoid further loss.
Today, uncertainty about future inflation may discourage investment and saving, or may lead to reductions in investment of productive capital.

  17. 2 make civil servants happy n 2 continue 2 vote 4 Umno/BN, there will b a pay rise 4 them n all MPs
    Don’t worry, we M’sians r stupid n easily squeezed
We r oredi paying 4 d most expensive cars through our noses
We will also b paying 4 expensive daily basic needs
Ppl like Toyol n d white hair in Sarawak no sweat lah, they can buy imported goods, including water n air
4 ppl who insisted on voting 4 Umno/BN, carry on – what u get is what u voted 4, others get it too

  18. It is the recipe of its people of this country getting poorer while those are in power become richer, the way I see it the government doesn’t really care much for the next election result, what is far more important is how to make instant cash at this point of time!

  19. This is the best Najib can do. Now its in PR court to scare the daylights out of people about total subsidies removal, GST, electricity, water, toll roads etc..

PR need a spin plan that is timed perfectly for maximum impact i.e., the next GE. If done right e.g. in Felda settlements, Najib career can be ended with this issue alone.

  20. You know why this is a bad idea?

The whole point of improving the govt finances is so that some key projects can move forward whatever the excuses are. The harder it is to improve the finance of the govt, the better the project has to be. This is a highly unpopular move that can politically get out of hand – he needs good projects to move ahead with this and he does not have it.

The worst thing to do is to raise money, spin it on popular but low impact projects and then when the marginal projects don’t have popular impact, you end up getting shot in the end.

Seriously, the man cannot think strategically.

  21. hello bagan Pinang folks. Your 100rm won’t buy you much these days isn’t it? The fridge u get got no food in it isn’t it?
Rather starve for a day than go hunger for days.

  22. pernah ke si menteri menteri ni hidup dengan gaji biasa dan sederhana?
kita kat sini dah lah nak separuh mati!
kais pagi, makan pagi! kais petang, makan petang!
beli kapal selam berbillion. bina kayangan berbillion. buat ni buat tu, berbillion. nak salam dengan obama berjuta. semua no problem!
problem karang, rakyat biasa yang tertekan!

  23. Let’s just see how much the BN government “saved” from withdrawing these subsidies and see what the BN government will do with this money! Eventually, by the next budget date, they will announce that there is still DEFICIT! These “daylight robbers” cannot do anything else better than to make the rich richer and the poor poorer!!!!!!

  24. This simply means there will small hikes along the way. Maybe another 5sen petrol hike, etc in the last quarter.
Meanwhile, we see extravagance in the PM dept. Spending 4bil for doing nothing but paid for by the poor rakyat.

  25. Hey fellas come on. As a nation we are fantastic. Better than singapore surely. Look. We have angkasawan. This fact alone weights mega tonnes, if you ask me. Its true! Swallow it. And we will be sending a second angkasawan. Yes. Swallow that too. And and and we need money for that. See. Our first angkasawan flipped flattened flour dough and tested tea pouring in space. It was a success. Complete success. The result was published in a science journal. Google it. Yeah. Go on. Do it. And the next angkasawan will carry out an important – a first in the world – test. The effect of not wiping or cleaning oneself after defecating in space (i.e. in weightless condition). According to informed sources, the result if established would have far reaching impact on human lives and wide medical applications. This will spearhead our biotech endeavours. This is big. No. Its mega. Yeah. It is going to be mega. Tun Tan Sri Dato Seri Datuk Dr Prof Apapunboleh [DELETED] is in charge. Rest assured. Nothing can go wrong.

  26. Hurrah! From the money saved as a result of the cut in subsidies, we will soon be able to purchase a 3rd scorpene, and the lucky middleman will be getting another RM500 million commission from that sale. And that middleman’s name begins with an ‘N’……

  27. //Our first angkasawan flipped flattened flour dough and tested tea pouring in space.//

He is still waiting for his nobel prize in physics. His theory of mixing flour dough with tea would produce far greater energy than Einstein’s E = mc^2 for nuclear explosions. Very lucky the Russian spacecraft was not blown apart during our great angkasawan’s space experiment. I propose that Putrajaya’s name be changed to his name in his honor. Very grand sounding name– Sheikh Moozjaya ( like micky mouse’s name)

  28. To start doing away with or reduction of subsidy of essential goods in Malaysia at this stage is really a reflection of how desperate the situation is. The country must be completely bankrupt and coffers completely depleted or else the UMNO regime will never that a stance that will definitely erode their standing with the electorate – an extremely dangerous position for them when Pakatan is so near Putrajaya. To be fair it is the culmination of all the sins – the structural corruption, the big time thievery, incompetence and apartheid from the time of that maniacal mamak to the present Najib administration that have caused us to be in this impalatable predicament. The subsidies were essentially a veil over the peoples eye or even more exact, addicitve drugs given to the populace at large to continue having this feel good effect while the umnoputras and cronies continue to plunder the country to dust and still get voted in. That is why some ignoramus until today still regard that maniacal mamak with fondness despite being the one most reponsible in taking the country apart and down. He is the Father of Racism, Corruption and Deceit of Malaysia and until now his thinking is so warp that he still cannot evisage the dimension of damage he has inflicted on the country. Histroy will be harsh to him.

With the subsidy veil, the people do not feel they are being robbed poor as fast. If you want to know really how poor we have become just compare ourselves with our neighbours like Singapore. We started off on the same footing with everything and they had nothing. Thirty years down the line their per capital income is 5 times ours. Their people require no subside for anything and pay for health care with mostly their own money and yet they can spend millions for a few cubic metre of air is space (condominium) and easily afford first class health service. Their currency value is more than double ours and NONE of them have any problem raising money for expensive medical treatment. How many Malaysian can afford private health care? Most are already eating from hand to mouth. We have become SO POOR that without subsidy we can almost survive. We are not in an enviable position to say the least. That is why if Pakatan does not win in the next GE, Malaysia is dead.

  29. Dont Complainlah because You Deserve it by Voting the Rotten Corrupt Stinking BN for the past Decades. Why Worry and Bother about the rural Rakyat . They will Never get to know What is Happening Because We are in Full Control of the Mass Media. No Printing Permit if You dont Toe the line and Kow Tow to the Grand Master not the Expose the Truth of Mismangement Nepotism and Embezzlement of National Funds.Throw the Crumbs and Leftovers to the Hungry Rural Rakyat and They will not Complain while We Continue to to Gasak Gasak our Unsatisfying Hunger with More Unproductive Showpiece White Elephant Grandiose Projects.SO the Poor Rakyat Can Expect More Subsidy Cuts to Come Because Our National Deficient Will Grow Bigger UNLESS WE RISE UP UNITE AND USE OUR VOTES TO KICK AND SEND THE CORRUPT BN TO HELL WHERE THEY BELONG.

  30. 5-in-1 soon to become 100-in-1 and then 1000-in-1. They will try to tell the nasi lemak sellers, goreng pisang sellers, coffeeshop operators, charkwayteow sellers not to increase their prices. They could even threaten retaliation if these hawkers increase their prices, but the true retaliation has to be against this corrupt government.

Any government that doubles the size of its PM’s department and has an annual maintenance cost of RM 4 billion needs to be dismantled by the rakyat.

  31. Sarawak is going to spend at least RM 20 billion in building hydroelectric dams all over the state “to attract investment”. Truth is that they need the contracts plus the timber extraction.

The cabinet is considering the US$10 billion subway system proposed by Gamuda. They are also considering purchasing another submarine – probably another one that is termed “unsinkable”. Then the amphibuous vehicle contract given to DRB Hicom ? Then the Eurocopter contract about to be resurrected ?

You think they CARE about the poor rakyat ? All the commentators here are right. We deserve the government we vote into power.

  32. The sure sign of huge non stop corruptions and from robbers and thieves has always been making the people pay more.
We have read and know from history of cruel governments.
However…….most do not have the natural resources we have.
Yes….for modern times…UMNO B top the list for CORRUPTIONS in developed countries….never stop…never satisfied…keep taking our God given wealth…like blood suckers…all growing fat and surely will burn in hell one day.
When I hear…”Paper lama. Satu tingkat.. RM5″….I am so proud to be a Malaysian Chinese to see my roots have so much dignity and pride..to suffer like that…without surrendering to bribes and sweets.
That man will surely vote for change in government.

  33. Dagen….We are ALWAYS better than Singapore in terms of living conditions..and lifestyle.
This is not due to UMNO B government.
It is our blessed natural land given by God.
We are talking about the thieves and robbers making life difficult for Malaysians with the dirty out dated “divide to rule” with no true unity at all.
Only that way…UMNO B can keep stealing and fooling all.
To make sure they succeed…..just look a the TVs and newspapers.
Yes mind control is the name f the game..UMNO B hope to rule Malaysians forever.
If you compare this to Singapore….than the minds of Malaysians are far below Singaporeans…mentalities and attitudes.for Singaporeans are fully united as one race….Singaporeans.
Until and unless all Malaysians are united as ONE RACE…the MALAYSIANS …our country will be ripped apart by UMNO B that pleases them most…to govern forever.

  34. Why must the innocent rakyat be made to pay the price for BN’s ill-management of public funds and extravagant spending?

It was reported in theSun today that the RM6 billion Rawang–Ipoh Electrified Double Tracking Project, which has generated a cost overrun of RM1.14 billion, was described in the Auditor-General’s (A-G) 2008 report as being poorly managed, and that the government may have to bear part of the loss. The Transport Ministry did not take any action against the project manager for its failure to supervise or monitor the implementation of the project.

When is BN going to stop ill-management of public funds and the nation’s resources? What is the use of cutting subsidies when the leaks are not plugged?

  35. Great Job BEnd !! Steal from Rakyat & spend, throw away 750 million more and enrich yourselves.

Time to Change is very near ….

And all these “sinners” would be hanged soon ..

  36. Why cut such subsidies such as petrol, gas and sugar which are essential to the ordinary folks. Cutting such items mean price increases again for foods and food products, drinks and drink related products and transportation which will obviously affect the ordinary people. Why don’t the government increase the gambling tax, increase the duty of imported luxury cars, building and household products and better still reduce the salary of ministers and all political oppointees if they really wanted to save money. In addition, the government should reduced corruption, reduced over employing staffs, reduced the number of overseas trip by ministers and cronies etc etc and not squeezing the majority of the already poor ordinary folks of their sudsidies.

  37. Cutting non-essential purchases like submarines, amphibuous vehicles, attack helicopters, train systems, etc affects the multiplier effect of expenditure. [Good to ask cintanegara what he understands by multiplier effect, but then I think he is a graduate in Islamic studies.]

The multiplier effect is extremely important to UMNO – no capital expenditure means no commissions means no investment in properties in Perth, London and elsewhere, means no means of keeping girlfriends, mistresses and 4th wives happy, means no service, means no satisfaction, means perpetual scowl on the faces of UMNOputras…..

  38. The saving from today’s subsidy cut is not even enough to cover 25% of expenditure of the PM’s department.
So we all pay a bit each to pay for the 40,000 civil servants in his department.

  39. Najib says it is a price rationalization….price of goods are still among lowest in the region…

    Not rakyat should consider…

A support rationalisation……….Democracy practice standard is still among the lowest in the region….. just behind Myammar..

Lets start with the coming Sarawak State Election….time to give a ‘red card’ to Barisan Nasional/PBB/SUPP/PRS/SPDP !

  40. There are many more subsidy cuts in the pipeline…….. Portably there will be a price increase of 5 sen per litre of petrol/diesel every 4 months…….. Najib will do it a way that like ‘the boiling frog story’………The premise is that if a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out, but if it is placed in cold water that is slowly heated, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death…

Previous PM -Badawi did it drastically …and received a instant backlash……. Now Najib with APCO as consultant….. will do in a different way….. But in the end , the people are still the one that will suffer the most (but Najib’s rhetorics that “people first” will doing the magic in consoling the Kampung/rural folks/illiterates to continue to support BN)

  41. Folks, I think it is rather easily “rob” money from the rakyat by imposing a tax call “BREATHING TAX”, meaning every breath you take the government will charge due to environmental concern on huge amount of carbon dioxide being released, or a “FARTING TAX” also can put into consideration. This will be the fastest way to make tons of money in order to settle the debts or bonds the government will have to carry up on their shoulder for making dumpful decision on those White Elephant projects.

  42. Najib’s spinmeisters are now telling the mainstream press not to use the words “price hike”. Instead the allowed terms are “price adjustments” and “subsidy cuts”. Some pro-Najib bloggers are even comparing Najib’s “gentle” move to Badawi’s sudden and big price hikes a few years ago.

Whatever you call it, Najib makes no mention of cuts in unnecessary expenditure or moves to plug the leakages, and that is really upsetting the Malays. PR, the door is open for you guys to preach to the rural Malays….they are now much more willing to listen to alternatives.

  43. Whatever way they call it the fact remains that the petrol, gas and sugar have hiked . What if its the other way round? Najib will proudly and happily announce they have been downed. Just like they always announce that the crime rate has been downed and never say they are up. If they are down how is that every day we hear of robberies, thefts, rapes happening in broad daylight increasing everywhere. The ministers and all their stoggies are not affected because they have bodyguards and outriders to protect them. They never cared for the rakyat and yet they cheat the rakyat of the truth! Change the BN for a safer place to stay! Vote for PR!

  44. Apart from “BREATHING TAX”, jib can also introduce a new tax called “Defecating/Peeing Tax”, whereby each and every citizen has to pay RM1 each time he/she answers the call of nature.

    28 million people x 10 times a day = RM280 million a day!

  45. WE are told that this move will save the nation about RM750 million a year.

Right and they think that will help?

The country has wasted RM12.5 billion on PKFZ. We will spend RM4.8 billion on the second Penang bridge (which started out at RM2.7 billion).

It is like selling blood to save RM10 and then going out and spending RM100. Who are they trying to fool?

  46. It is ridiculous when it was highlighted in the papers about the actual price increase will less than one cent. Let me reproduce these numbers for our collective amusement.

    Roti Canai: RM 0.80 –> RM 0.8024
    Teh Tarik: RM 1.00 –> RM 1.003
    Nasi Lemak: RM 1.50 –> 1.5045
    and so on.

This is a government who is able to carry out budgeting for its “rakyat” in the thousandth place but not able to recover even one thousandth of the RM12.5 billion? MACC, pls call Mr Harry Markopolos, the Greek geek who can save One Malaysia from the chorus of “goat songs” we hear on a daily basis.

  47. k1980 :
Apart from “BREATHING TAX”, jib can also introduce a new tax called “Defecating/Peeing Tax”, whereby each and every citizen has to pay RM1 each time he/she answers the call of nature.
    28 million people x 10 times a day = RM280 million a day!

Done that. It is called the monthly Indah water bill. A charge for absolute nothing. THey even build they water treatment plants upstream of our water intakes. So the cycle is complete. One better than Singapore’s New Water.

  48. Rationale behind the timing of this move is clearly:

    1) Coffers are running desperately dry and cannot wait any longer

    2) Better to announce the cut now and allow time to desensitize the people for the next GE. Any delays will mean announcing the cuts too close to the GE and this could blow up in their faces like the fuel subsidy cut in July 2007 that affected the outcome of the March 2008 GE.

This means GE will not happen over the next 6 months at least.

  49. subsidy rationing ??? hahaha…najib has in fact, ACTUALLY HELP PK by making a road for them to putrajaya in the next election !!!

but 1st, pk should do these :
    1) legalised pk officially because if not, bn will drug the courts to deem pk as an illegal entity and thus cannot rule malaysia !!!!

    2) promise what the rakyat will get if pk comes to power … eg. fuel cost reduced, no gst, language freedom of choice on education, etc

    3) ensure to setup committee to review all previous suspected corrupt projects by bn

    4) confiscate all corrupted personels’ properties and cash to be divert back to projects for the rakyat and cash for the elderly and handicapped or less fortunate people.

    5) imprison and scarp all benefits of all who twist the human rights and make a mockery of the laws like the judges, polis,ag,perak speaker and mb and not forgetting the kataks also … confiscate their estates too !!! make them do community works like cleaning the streets and clogged drains

    6) give all surplus of confiscated estates and cash for rakyat’s projects like building hospitals, schools, better roads and drainage and most importantly, give monthly allowances to the elderly, the handicapped and the less fortunate !!!

with the above simple points, i’m very sure the rakyat will give pk a 5-year trial run and see what happens !!!
