The 1,725-vote majority victory of the Barisan Nasional in the Hulu Selangor parliamentary by-election yesterday is a pyrrhic victory for the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak – so devastatingly costly both in political and monetary terms that they lay the seeds for the forthcoming defeat of the Barisan Nasional.
The Barisan Nasional has a bill of over RM100 million for its Hulu Selangor by-election campaign – RM60 million for various infrastructure projects and easily more than RM40 million for the Barisan Nasional election campaigners and the many rent-a-crowd outings for the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and other Cabinet Ministers.
After such outpourings of money politics, the 1,725-vote majority is actually more a defeat than a victory for Najib and the Barisan Nasional.
The UMNO target was to win Hulu Selangor with at least 6,000-vote majority and the Umno leadership was so confident of this huge victory that the Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin went public on this Umno objective mid-day during Hulu Selangor polling yesterday.
The Umno leadership thought that it should not have any big problem, with the RM100 million war chest and the big guns led by the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and former Prime Minister, spearheading the charge in the campaign in Hulu Selangor.
Umno leaders regarded the PKR win of the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat in the 2008 general election as a fluke-shot, which was why Najib talked about the Hulu Selangor seat being on “loan” to PKR.
In 2008, the three Barisan Nasional candidates in the three constituent State Assembly seats of Hulu Bernam, Batang Kali and Kuala Kubu Baru had polled a total majority of 6,176 votes, but at the Hulu Selangor parliamentary level, the BN candidate G. Palanivel lost the seat to the PKR candidate Datuk Zainal Abidin in a wafer-thin majority of 198 votes.
Palanivel secured 22,979 votes for the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat, which is 3,285 votes less than the total of 26,264 votes cast for the three BN state assembly seats in 2008.
Najib and Muhyiddin calculated that they should be able to restore this 6,176-vote majority BN won at the level of the three state assembly seats in 2008, but the Hulu Selangor by-election results proved them wrong.
In the event, BN’s P. Kamalanathan secured 24,997 votes which is 1,267 votes less than the total of 26,264 votes collectively polled by the three winning BN State Assembly candidates in 2008.
On the other hand, Pakatan Rakyat’s Zaid Ibrahim polled 23,272 votes yesterday which is more than the vote polled by PKR parliamentary candidate in 2008, i.e. 23,177.
Despite all the odds, PR is making headway while BN is clearly losing ground. The future belongs to Pakatan Rakyat.
Najib said the Hulu Selangor by-election is a test for the MCA leadership, which clearly had failed the test as MCA is the biggest loser in the Barisan Nasional in the Hulu Selangor by-election.
In the 2008 “political tsunami”, MCA secured some 37% of the Chinese votes cast in Hulu Selangor but this has fallen to 25 – 28% in the by-election yesterday.
The immediate question facing the MCA is whether the MCA Ministers and Deputy Ministers would resign if Najib does not honour his Hulu Selangor by-election promise to issue a RM3 million cheque today for the building of new Rasa Chinese primary school?
On the eve of the Hulu Selangor by-election, Najib made the campaign promise in Rasa on a RM3 million approval for rebuilding Rasa Chinese Primary School declaring:
“If we win this by-election, you can come to Kuala Lumpur the next day to look for me. I will write a personal letter to approve the money and it will be transferred to the school board’s account. If we lose, don’t have to come.”
I commend the voters of Rasa for turning in a 82.4% support for Zaid Ibrahim.
Malaysians are waiting to see whether Najib would honour his pledge to sign the RM3 million approval allocation to Rasa Chinese primary school today and if not, what would be the response of the MCA Ministers and Deputy Ministers as well as the MCA President Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek.
you can buy us much cheaper in Sibu!

Hulu selangor had been BN’s strong hold before the GE 2008 but not much development for the past 50 years.
Now, after losing the GE 2008, BN intended to bring development just for the sake of this By-Election.
The message is very clear here that in order for your district to be noticed, you have to send BN down. So that BN would offer whatever they have to bring develoment to your district.
The sky is clear and everyone can see it from far.
On the day 26.04.2010, CSL went to see NR to claim the 3mil NR promised allocation for Rasa Chinese primary school:
CSL ask; brother, selamat pagi.
NR answer; selamat pagi Chua.
CSL; semalam kita hantam dia orang cukup2, hor.
NR; senyum kambing.
CSL; pun ikut senyum kambing.
NR; ada apa apa lagi keh? gua ada appointment lah.
CSL; tak ala apa apa lah.
NR; ok lah..jumpa lagi lor.
CSL; ok lor..bye bye.
Maybe BN “won” this “buy election” but for the BN leaders to declare that it was a referendum and support for the GTP etc.etc. is to delude themselves. For crying out loud, the majority was only about 1700 votes and this could easily have been due to the massive vote buyings and the sneaky transfer of the electoral register of 13000 voters. In fact, after all those election bribes and gerry mandering, and they only managed a 1700 majority, BN actually “lost” because many of those offered obviously took the money but did not vote BN.
But Pakatan could learn a lesson in this defeat .
From Day 1, BN/UMNO attacked PKR, the weak link in the coalition. Perhaps because the candidate was from PKR but I suspect the entire BN strategy was directed against PKR because they know it is the weakest link and they can exploit it by encouraging mass defections, slear campaigns etc. PKR needs to clean up their act before the next GE.
“I commend the voters of Rasa for turning in a 82.4% support for Zaid Ibrahim.”
Yep. They told Najib, BN and MCA off, and to shove their RM 3 million carrots up their alimentary canals.
The Chinese, as usual, know what is wrong and what is right. They have principles, integrity and honour. BN just cannot understand this. They can only succeed in FELDA and the like.
MCA, as usual, is the biggest loser. Are they still relevant at all? Are they in their dying days?
And one BN politician was crying in sorrow last night – Palanivel, and taiko, Samy Vellu. They were crying for what it could have been. Enter parliament and Cabinet by the front door not the back door. Now Kam Ah Lan has more credibility than his two party “mandores”.
In fact Kam Ah Lan has a new “Godfather” now, in Muhyiddin and UMNO. That’s why he kissed Muhyiddin’s hand to show his loyalty and subservience in a scene reminiscent of the one in “The Godfather” movie. Now it will be payback time from Ah Lan to his “Godfather”. Can’t wait to see how it will all pan out.
PR has managed to retain its solid 23,000 plus supporters in Hulu Selangor. It remains strong despite this setback. It is still a force to reckon with. Don’t mess around with them.
Now let us all go forward to Sibu.
I think BN won because of its first deadly blow on Zaid Ibraham as “kaki botol “.It attacked Zaid relentlessly especially in the malay areas and through its control MSM. Money politic and bribery were common tactics and most time voters have not been cowed to it.In this case Zaid lost was mainly because of his character/credibility has been assassinated in the beginning stage.Frankly speaking,NR and MY are genius of deception. It’s a kind of a new war game. You win through deception.
///The Barisan Nasional has a bill of over RM100 million for its Hulu Selangor by-election campaign…../// – Kit
Blatant abuse and mismanagement of public funds.
Results show that Hulu Selangor is no longer an UMNO stronghold, period.
The corrupted and unethical BN/UMNO politicians lavished M$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ just to buy the rakyat votes. Lets see these politicians and their rich cronies will keep their promises.
Its ok PKR lost this time. Zaid has done a great job and a great service to the rakyat of U.Selangor.
At least they will enjoy the $100 million we hope.
But we PKR will be back and much much stronger the next time.
Let them delude themselves that the tide is now with them.
Meawhile PR should start the work for the next GE.
Chua Soi Lek ask PM for the 3 million to build chinese school.
I think it is better to buy a lifetime supply of Viagra for Dr Chua. What the PM will do is give 2 RM100 bill to Chua and say “Mari sini ambil RM 200 ni dan pegi beli sikit Viagra untuk malam ni”

Fair to say, Zaid, despite being a loser this round, has helped PR to maintain its drive to march towards Putrajaya.
Umno is still in shiok sendiri mode and mood. To them popular support means support and popularity within umno itself. All the movement of ex-umno idiots back to umno, to them, means umno is re-gaining popular support and grounds. For a while, before voters of hulu selangor cast their votes, I was actually fearful of the fact that the people would abandon the hope and aspiration for change and move en block to umno again, especially the malays. Quite obviously umno was banking on that outcome when they confidently predicted a majority margin of 7000.
Now what does the result show? I say that the hope and aspiration for change has neither changed nor waivered. In an umno stronghold (i.e. hulu selangor) a good half of the people still voted for change. 1,700 majority realistically means, in terms of head counts, umno’s candidate has only a mere 850 more supporters than zaid has – half the number of kids in a school. This is despite the fact that 13,000 voters were mysteriously moved at the last minute by the EC, that RM20,000 and RM50,000 direct payouts were made by umno to bribe felda settlers and orang asli, that a RM3,000,000 carrot was dangled in front of chinese voters (which was tied with the threat to take it away if chinese did not vote umno’s candidate), that zaid was unfairly labeled a drunkard and gambler, that umno monoplise the msm, that umno misused the government machineries to campaign for their candidate, and many many more.
I would say the result shows that the momentum for change in still intact. A victory would have been better. But the loss in hulu selangor of a mere 850 voters tells the whole country a bigger story. So keep focus fellas. Voters are still on our side. My only real concern is about the indians. They ought really to get their aim right – whether to stick with the fight for change or to remain subdued and abused under umno (and be happy with undeliverable promises and sweets given out once every five years).
Next target sibu. The war aint over.
Looking back, the slim BN majority is indeed a blessing in disguise for PR. For one, BN has now to fulfill all its election promises and those are not just peanuts…. further payments to FELDA settlers that will make settlers in other constituencies raise their expectations, a UiTM campus, blah, blah, blah. I bet they will honor it just before the next general election so that they can buy two elections at the price of one.
And now our poor Mr Samy Vellu has to swallow his words and his pride that he will resign if BN wins, or else hang on with an even thicker skin.
Look across the South China Sea to Sibu.
See if you can early withdraw a Fixed Deposit.
We are counting on you DAP, to show the way. Don’t be soft. Penetrate hard, hard. You can do it.
///“If we win this by-election, you can come to Kuala Lumpur the next day to look for me. I will write a personal letter to approve the money and it will be transferred to the school board’s account. If we lose, don’t have to come.”///
I think the Chinese in Ulu Selangor had been offended by Najib’s statement above. They probably had these words for Najib: If you don’t want to help, please walk away. Why must you make us a beggar and want us to bow down to you?
Anyhow, MCA today is irrelevant to the Chinese community. They probably can do better if they pull out of BN.
PKR, PAS and DAP reaching the new heights by removal of barriers, no preconditions, any and all issues could be discussed with no restriction. The first round of political tsunami between PR-BN Umno provided an opportunity for PR coalition to sound each other out. It involve endless, repetitive arguments, but each side spoke its owm mind. Although not much was achieved, this round initiated the process of normalizing, marked the end of a stalemate with no dialogue, and symbolized the beginning of a long period of dialogue. Those barriers could not be eliminated all at once is no longer a threat to PR. In restrospect, there were also no other reasons for the impasses. Normalizing relations with improving understanding each other closer, is the highest achievement to intensifying next GE mileage.
Not that harping on this is not necessary but the truth is the bigger problem is can PR hold together. This battle was bruising on PR as well. PAS was stretched to its limit and PKR was dealt blow after blow. Anwar need a plan to bring in more quality people while at the same time get PAS supporters not to lose faith in PKR. What if, got forbid, Nik Aziz, have to leave the scene?
The worst critics of Malaysia have always said that it will take a disaster to change Malaysia. Looks like they will be proven right. We have to do go down the toilet first like what happened to Philippines or Zimbabwe. Its unavoidable now..
Actually the RM3m carrot will not work for two reasons and the chinese knew the reasons well.
First, RM3m is not a small sum. Then again it is not an amount that the chinese community cannot come out with. If one were to tally up the amount of money the chinese community has cumulatively contributed to chinese schools and chinese education in the last 50yrs the sum, I am certain, would be astronomical indeed. If calculated to present value, the sum could well hit a billion in today’s money. So why should the chinese in hulu selangor be attracted by jib’s mere RM3m conditional (and therefore non-genuine) offer.
And the second reason. Everyone knows well umno’s modus. The promised RM3m when disbursed would eventually reach the school in the form of ridiculously over-valued tables, chairs, writing boards etc. Going by the umno laptop supply experience, the margin of over-charging could be in the order of twenty times. That means the school could end up with supplies worth a mere RM150,000 with the rest being over-charging that would yet again benefit umnoputras.
So the chinese in hulu selangor told jib in no uncertain terms, “Stuff it jib”. If I may add “Stuff it up your … well you know where.”
25th April 2010, Hulu Selangor parliamentary by-election statistics (based on published sources):
Total voter turnout = 48,935
Total votes for Kamalanathan = 24,997
Total votes for Zaid Ibrahim = 23,272
Total of spoilt votes = 48,935 – (24,997 + 23,272) = 666
Isn’t that an ominous sign?
U mean no tamil school in HS? Why never asked for one or asked for more fund? Sure quick cash is more enticing, eh? Hey, do you have a dream, not only for yourself, but also your generations to come?…err ……?
The PM knows Chinese place importance in education, children’s education and hence the “offer” in education. Probably the chinese should hv counter offered him 5 millions, you win you give, you lose, you can keep the 5 millions!
///BREAKING NEWS updated 11.35am British forensic pathologist Prof Peter Vanezis also says Teoh Beng Hock’s injuries were consistent with a fall from height. And “Teoh BH was fully conscious before he fell”///–Malaysiakini
That means that it is confirmed that TBH was not carried down the stairs or the lift. What would the prof. expect to see in terms of additional injuries that did not appear if TBH was no fully conscious. What injuries should not have been on Teoh’s bodies if he fell unconscious? Was there other injuries which did not come from the fall but appeared on the deceased. Was Teoh capable of walking up to the window and jumped. Was the state of Teoh’s consciousness just before the fall capable of telling him the consequence of what he was about to do, or to be done with?
Now that Prof Vanezis has testified, Pornthip’s testimony would be needed to give Prof Vanezis a chance to either refute Pornthip, or to learn more about the finer details regarding injuries suffered from falling from high ground. A dead man cannot be conscious, and a conscious man may not be able to resist being carried and thrown out of the window depedning on the state of injuries suffered before the fall.
To exemplify the 1 Malaysia concept and a kind heart determined to serve people of HS, now Sdr Kam Lan (oops, sorry, YB Kam Ah Lan) is required to walk hand in hand with the MCA chief to see the PM for the approval letter, not cheque. Wonder if the amt is to be transferred in one lump sum or staggered till the next GE?
The allocation of RM3 million was not BN money but the tax payers. BN has abused its position to make allocation during the by election. Thus the Chinese do not believe in BN. That also shown that BN has not been sincere to allocate fund for Chinese school development. They only do it during the by election thus Chinese do not believe in them
Allocation of fund should be done as it needed and there are many more Chinese School need the fund for development if BN can do the same without any by election then the Chinese will believe in them.
hul sela ppl who voted for banyak najis, are either very immoral, unethical or braineless!
wonder got rm3 million for tamil school or not???
so next GE,-13, got 222 constituencies, each spend rm 60 million, then total should be rm 13,320 million, wow , how rakyat can afford??
UmnoB n BNputras no time lah 2 reply 2 LKS, still mabuk after drinking 2 celebrate d win
Time 2 reflect d political future of PKR n PR
Got 2 start now 2 plan 4 d next GE
Got credible candidates or not, got good strategy or not against d corrupt BN
‘I will write a personal letter to approve the money and it will be transferred to the school board’s account’
no time mention? can do so by 25April 2020??
Veteran political players[DAP & PAS] work very hard for PKR in HS.
Now is the turn of PKR Sarawak to repay sincerely and wholeheartedly to campaign vigorously for the chose DAP Candidate in Miri.
PKR is in a mini-crisis at the moment with those kataks from UMNO. Hope they come out stronger-take a step back and take two steps forward.
DON’T PLAY2
Najib wondered why the Chinese did not support BN like the Malays. Was Najib from Mars and has just arrived on earth?
CSL said that it was because of the fight among the new and old MCA local leaders. So CSL agreed with Najib that MCA cannot remain neither dead nor alive, and CSL has a role to play. Did CSL imply that the Chinese who voted for PR supported the old OTK group? In that case, as a 38% President, it is time to have a fresh election again in MCA.
Perkasa does not like chinese for one reason. They see the requests by chinese for openness and equality as a fight for a slice of the umno gobermen’s long time affirmative action exercised in favour of umnoputras only.
They are mistaken there. Chinese do not need affirmative actions at all. They do not need special contracts or licences or APs. After decades of surviving NEP they have learned to thrive in adverse environment. They do not require affirmative action like umnoputras need the drips. But what they they wanted are the removal of illogical/insensible barriers, procedural complications and appallingly inefficient and slow public service all of which are hindering business activities in general (not just their business activities); a safer country for everyone to live in; a less corrupt and wastful administration; more chinese schools; and eradication of hardcore poor.
Affirmative actions to improve the malays can continue but it should not be manipulated by umno into actions to fatten umnoputras only. And very importantly, it must be turned into a licence to corner any sector of the economy which umnoputras deem profitable and treat it as an umnoputra-only sector. Let truly qualified or experience or competent malays do the job and do not let some half baked umnoputra bungle it up. So really perkasa should not fear the chinese. Perkasa has nothing to fight for in this sense.
What about indians then? The demands by indians seem a little odd at times. They appear to be asking for assistance ala umnoputras’ style affirmative action. This would be seen by perkasa as a direct challenge to their (i.e. umnoputras’) rights. But do indians really need affirmative actions? Besides, non-umnoputras (indians included) have the benefit of learning umnoputras’ nep addition lesson. If what indians want are schools and temples and better business opportunities like what the chinese want (as elaborated above) then affirmative action is not what they want. In that case they should fight for change alongside the chinese, non-umnoputra malays and the rest against umno. Lets us all do it together.
For those ex-umno idiots who decided to go back to umno, it is time for you people to shiver. Despite all the bangings and hammerings and spendings to buy crossovers, pakatan (in the eyes of voters) have not weakened. You people were simply fooled by umno’s controlled msm into believing that pakatan is now fragile and about to break up.
No worry, RM3 million will b given 2 d Chinese community there 2 build d school
Condition is d contractor n subcons must b fr Perkasa n Umnoputras
RM3 million just enuf 2 build jamban of d new Rasa Chinese primary school
Other rooms, next change, after GE-13 when d Chinese there kwai kwai vote 4 Kam-a-lan
If Najib give the 3million, I would actually be impressed. I expect him not to predictably give it because he know he blew away too much money and have to save it for the next round. AND he would be smart to do so..
The Chinese vote is significant because they walked away from short-term gain for longer term national issues. This is a fundamental shift that is not likely to change anytime soon. The Chinese did not vote because they were angry at Chinese issues. They also voted against BN despite promise of development. They did vote against the MCA because of the crap for the last year which may or may not change. BUT in large part the Chinese have decided either to vote against BN OR they will leave this country. They failed to take on the BN, so their only choice is to leave. More than any other group, the Chinese in Malaysia will be hollowed out by mass-exodus in the next few years. The educated Indians will also do the same as will be a group of Malays.
There is absolutely no good reason for courting the Chinese vote heavily anymore except due to the persuasion of Chua Soi Lek who can do it but he won’t – its just a lot of money to ask now when he will need to ask for a lot in the future.
No the RM3 million is not going to show up but not just because Najib is predictably weak but it actually also make sense due to the direction this country is heading – down the toilet.
According to TheMalaysiaInsider report of April 26th “Malay rights group Perkasa wants the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to review election pledges made in Chinese areas in Hulu Selangor because of the community’s poor support for the coalition. Its president Datuk Ibrahim Ali said despite BN’s success in winning the semi-rural seat from PKR, the Chinese voters had largely chosen to back the federal opposition.
“It is necessary for the government to delay any allocation and approval of projects for the Chinese community,” said Ibrahim in a statement responding to the by-election result. Ibrahim added that the government should also ignore all the demands made by BN members, MCA and Gerakan, as the Chinese of Hulu Selangor had rejected the ruling coalition. “They show no appreciation to BN government’s efforts, even though the BN government had to hurt the feelings of the Malays and the natives,” said Ibrahim. “All their demands are fulfilled by the government but they do not know how to be grateful,” he added.
By that logic, Najib need not honour his pledge to sign the RM3 million approval allocation to Rasa Chinese primary school, and MCA Ministers and Deputy Ministers need not resign by reason of his non honouring of pledge.
The logic is based on there being no distinction between the government and political party/coalition – so that if one does not support the political party/coalition, then one is not deserving of government’s support or funds …..If this is so what is the justification for this community to pay tax to the government formed by the political party/coalition that they supposedly do not support???
Spending approximately 100 million ringgit on a by election saying that it is not buying of votes but to address the problems facing the residents of the constituents. If this is true and not a lie, Najib, let me tell you that there are hundreds other constituencies that also face the same problems by the residents that needed hundreds of million to address. Will you do that now and not only when an MP or Adun has to die before you can carried out your so call programs for the people?
Najib, Does A Liar Tells Everyone That He Is A Liar?
GE 13 – Change The Federal Government No matter what, we must ensure that racist umno bn do not regain the power like they had for over the past fifty two years.
follow what Sun tzu said ‘Reward and Punishment’ look at their balance sheet or score card or ballot box
Tell the perkasa guy to go and kam alan a lan. No no no the other way round.
Going further from where Loh #21 left off on Teoh Beng Hock’s Inquest, according to Debra Chong report in The MalaysianInsider April 26, the lawyer for the Selangor state government Malik Imtiaz Sarwar, told the coroner’s court that “The Thai government wants a written assurance from Malaysia’s Home Affairs Ministry before it will allow its forensic expert Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand to testify in the ongoing inquest for Teoh Beng Hock…The Thai Ministry of Justice had asked Pornthip to secure a written guarantee letter last week but had yet to receive a reply from the Federal government.”
If that’s the Thai Govt’s official position then it is clear that (1) the Thai Govt itself believes (rightly or wrongly) that Pornthip requires our Govt’s written assurance as there is an issue about her security; (2) Pornthip is not lying about her govt’s concerns and directing her not to come unless with our Govt’s written assurance; and (3) in the interest of justice being done and seen done our govt will have to give that written assurance to pave the way for Thai Govt to allow Pornthip to testify; and (4) the Coroner court has to adjourn till the govt gives the assurance and Porntip is here to testify.
Najib should repeat his fantastic skill with hundreds of billions ready to bribe all in the13th GE.
Sure to win and so cheap to but up the whole country.
Najib supports to stamp our corruptions? Do you really trust this man?
Don’t be surprised with “negotiated” deals in the billions being given to “friends” of BN a la PKFZ style. That’s to raise money for the 2013 elections.
Is it really worth it to pay RM60K per vote just to win by this thin margin in Ulu Selangor? So, how much is Najis allocating to give out in GE13? If he is as “generous” then, each and every Malaysian may just enjoy a small windfall during GE13!!
remember chengho was a eunuch in ancient china.
Nazib would play eunuch and claimed to have forgotten what he had promised.
This government just have no shame, like the eunuch.
3 million is not much from putras’ point of view. 3 mileon tu sab-sab je. One call away to any sub-contractors, they r more than willing to donate for such a noble cause.
thought bn govt should appreciate that non bumi (esp chinese) paid most of the taxes (beside petronas), how can the perkasa or ‘perkosa’ talk rubbish!
Chengho…You talk rubbish all the time.
Now trying one time to be nice to the tax payers?
And you are very wrong…..many Muslims pay alot of taxes too.
Waa….twisting time already?
According to Umno-BN,
1. Vote BN, reward: get $$$.
2. Don’t vote BN, punishment: don’t get $$$.
Monsterball:
Go check your eyes. Cheng On and the fake Chengho are two different persons.
