Withdraw or Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat should be censured for tabling a more than three-fold hike in compound fines for traffic offences from RM300 to RM1,000 under Road Transport (Amendment) Bill

Former MCA President and Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat should be censured for tabling a more than three-fold hike in compound fines for traffic offences from RM300 to RM1,000 under the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill.

This bill was presented for first reading yesterday (Monday) and meant for passage by Parliament this week.

This is the act of a Transport Minister and government which are completely unconcerned and unsympathetic about the plight of the ordinary people in these difficult times.

This is also the voice of the people of Hulu Selangor and we want to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Transport Minister and the entire Cabinet that this Bill should be withdrawn and dropped altogether or this will be one reason why the Barisan Nasional should be taught a lesson on the by-election polling day on Sunday, April 25, 2010.

What is the position of the other MCA Ministers and the MCA national leadership as they cannot keep quiet at such an oppressive amendment to the Road Transport Act especially as the Transport Minister is from the MCA.

In another five days, the voters of Hulu Selangor will be casting their votes and making a decision which will not only affect Hulu Selangor and the Selangor state but also the future of the country and future generations.

This is because the result of the Hulu Selangor by-election will be seen as a barometer of whether Malaysians are ready and prepared for a total “political tsunami” in the next general election, effecting a change of a national government and transfer of power in Putrajaya from Barisan Nasional to Pakatan Rakyat with Anwar Ibrahim as the new Prime Minister and Najib Razak as the new Parliamentary Opposition Leader.

This is why the outcome of the Hulu Selangor by-election commands national and international focus and attention.

  1. Singapore, known at one time as ‘fine’ city learned the hard way that beyond a certain point ‘fines’ don’t work. Because the reward to those who break the rule is too high, the police will be even more incentivised to take bribes and worst victimised people to make money.. People will be afraid to DRIVE! With buses and lorries, either the companies have to raise wages or fewer people will drive.

What the hell is OTK thinking? How is this NOT a bad idea?

The only reason to do this is to teach BN leaders who did not support him a lesson before he leaves..

  2. mr. lim, in your blogs please present arguments from the other side so we know what we’re shooting, unless as usual the bn policy makers leap before they look. first pass, one would think the severe penalty will make violators think twice, but i agree w/ big joe, this is malaysia, you’re only going to make bribery that much more compelling.

  3. I can already imagine a conversation between the cops and their ‘victims’

    Cop: you kerja apa?

Poor Common Man: saya baiki air-cond Encik. Tolonglah Encik,.. saya bukan sengaja belok dekat sana. Saya betul-betul tak nampak itu tanda lah. Tolonglah… bagi satu amaran cukuplah encik

Cop: Saman RM1000 tau…… you boleh bayar ke….? (waving the summon ticket…. but does not appear to have any intention of writing anything on that piece of paper)

Poor Common Man: Encik… saya baiki air-cond… gaji campur OT baru RM1200…. kena bayar ‘installment’ rumah, harga barang sudah naik gila-gila sebab GST, lagi saya kena sara dua anak dan isteri….. lagi……

    (cop interrupts)
Cop: Jadi…. nak macam mana? (holding,.. and sometimes spinning, his pen)

Everybody knows where this goes from here

Not all cops are like that… but if this is implemented… surely MORE will act this way

Another brilliant effort to bully the common man. Only from BN.

Or is BN trying to create a situation & then scraps the plan & state in all newspaper headlines “BN listens to the voice of the people”?

  4. I’ll be damned….I want my children to be traffic police…cari makan has become much easier. Maybe this is BN’s idea of “jumping” into a high income country – for the traffic cops.

  5. Dear All,

Let us not step on the wrong footing here. We have always been hoping that road accidents can be reduced. Many ways were devised by the authorities to ensure road accident statistics decline on a year to year basis. Countless Ops Sikap been held by PDRM but yet the expected results were dissapointing. Instead the number of accidents were on the rise and the authorities are at a loss as to why this is/was the case. Many reasons were given as to why accident cases are on the rise and speeding over limited level formed one of the major reasons. Increasing the fine on APJ1987 appears to be a step on the right direction. It is to deter people from speeding and violating traffic rules.

It is not to burden the rakyat as there will be no burden if you are a law abiding citizen.

OTK is a great malaysian chinese leader

Yes, his leadership is so great until he recently lost his post as the president of his political party, to an individual whose hotel room exploits were documented as digitised moving pictures, stored in silvery discs…
