Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday that the government would announce the new economic model for the country within a month.
One of the first announcements made by Datuk Seri Najib Razak when he became the sixth Prime Minister was that a new economic model for Malaysia would be introduced to ensure that Malaysia make a quantum leap to escape the middle-income trap to become a high-income country.
Najib said the new economic model would provide more emphasis on innovation and creativity to help workers increase their income.
Last May, the Second Finance Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said the new economic model would be announced in the second half of the year. Why has this timeline for the new economic model been postponed until this year?
Should Malaysians place confidence in the promise of a new economic model to effect a quantum leap for Malaysia’s economic development to become a high-income country based on greater innovation and creativity among Malaysians?
Ten years ago, the Barisan Nasional government announced the K-Economy Master Plan as a ten-year blueprint to catapult the Malaysian economy from a production-based to a knowledge-based economy under the Third Outline Perspective Plan (2001-2010).
If the K-Economy Master Plan had been successful, Malaysia would be having a new economic model already. However, the nation and people have forgotten the K-Economy Master Plan and its 136 recommendations.
One of the recommendations of the K-Economy Master Plan was to establish the target that by 2010, all academicians in public universities would have Ph.D. qualifications.
Has this 2010 target been achieved? Definitely not. In fact, I do not think the number of university lecturers who now have Ph.D qualifications have reached even 50 per cent!
I call on Najib to give a report to Parliament when it reconvenes on March 15, 2010 on a progress report of the K-Economy Master Plan in the past decade and what has happened to all its 136 recommendations.
Malaysia’s economy is totally screwed up. What have we achieved from the millennium until now? Our situation is worse than Taiwan where the whole Taiwan was “concentrating” in politics instead of their economy during the last decade. Similarly, our government is putting more effort in politics+religion+Malay supremacy and other petty issues but not the economy. Currently, I am working abroad in China, although China is a socialist country, yet it is doing far more better than us economically. There are tens of thousands of Malaysians working here, if our government do not fix our economy & political system, I can only foresee more Malaysians will working abroad & our neighboring countries will surpass us.
Sadly to say, the K-economy Master Plan 2001-2010 is only successful in producing four or five college-educated religious fanatics who were kind enough to provide an e-commerce offer for their manpower service at charge to any patrons who would hire them to carry out the duty of throwing the molotov cocktails to burn off the Church buildings throughout the whole Malaysia, when the price was right, according to the fanatics. Very good bargaining skill too, as a compliment to be fair to them!
nr: i don’t know, ask my predecessor. i have a plane to catch.

Think lah K-economy Master Plan 2010-2020
Look, many countries slow population growth

Stop talking about K-economy when the speed of our Internet is not even 2Mbp and the number of households owing Broadband is less than 35%.
Correction:
number of households owing Broadband
should be
number of households OWNING Broadband
Trust UMNO….always good with high sounding slogans and very lacking in substance….
This is the reason BN engaged and survived purely
on twistings and turnings!
Don’t put your hope too high on K- economy Master
Plan…just trust your own plans!!!!!
Trust UMNO and Najib….in anything..you are NUTS!!
Najib had forgotten about the K-economy.
K-economy means Kronilisme ? or Korupsi ?
UmnoUtusans know these 2 types of economy only, nothing else !
Please, Kit Siang, the example that you pulled is not a good one. This 100% PhD holders as lecturers. It has done more damage than good. A great bunch of people – a good number thereof without the necessary aptitude – were dragged through respective programs, and in the end also sub-par PhDs given away.
Probably, not even Harvard has faculty with 100% PhD. And having a formal qualification like a PhD does not necessarily render a person one of innovation and creativity.
Please stop talking about a ‘new’ economic model. The idea of skilled labour economy is old. As you pointed out ten years ago, it was the same idea that failed. Anything they can do different is marginal and the challenge is more difficult now so net, the result, cynically stereotypically Malaysian, more of the same.
The problem at the root like in UMNO/BN ideology. Its bankrupt and sucks the life out of whatever can be done. These are not plans that can be done without radical change in ideas and for Malaysia it has got to be the ideology and culture of UMNO/BN. Its time to throw out the garbage that has accumulated for decades inside UMNO/BN. You don’t get rid of the clutter, it just stinks everything up. Since there is no one capable of cleaning out the garbage in UMNO/BN, its time to throw everything out..
New economic model ? Formulated by who for whom ?
If readers here will recall, MAS did the widespread asset unbundling exercise (WAU) about 10 years ago. Very few people understood what it meant, but the acronym sounded good. It sounded patriotic even. The architects of this exercise – no more than the assumption of MAS liabilities by the government – won instant fame and were quickly promoted to senior positions in the land. One became the chief of Khazanah and another became the CEO of a big local investment bank. Fast forward to present. The very same people who proposed the asset unbundling now proposed a full reversal – the bundling of all MAS assets !
This, in a nutshell, is what Bolehland economics is all about. Propose some high or exotic sounding name, get the village people mesmerised, and then hire a publicity agent to spin the story. There is no new economic model. It will be a rehash of the old model. It will be crafted by people who have not run a business or a country on a meritocratic basis.
How 2 talk abt K-economy lah when most cabinet ministers don’t hv d IQ 2 understand it
How abt English? Can understand meh?
Some cabinet ministers probably wonder Y they r called apa itu cabinet ministers
They wonder Y they r ministers, though not Christians, inside a furniture
New economic model will be a revised 1malaysia thingy. It will be “1.1malaysia”. The addition of “0.1” to the original “1” is to formalise the ketuanan idea that umnoputras are 1 and the rest are only 0.1 relatively speaking in terms of importance.
“Jib jib boleh”
Oi boh-liao dont forget. Umno has one very capable man. His name is Tun Tan Sri Dato Dr Prof Apapunboleh bin Similanchiapunok.
Q for 101 Politics students at UiTM:
Compare n contrast d academic qualifications of 1M’sia’s cabinet ministers n d little red dot’s cabinet ministers
Define Oxbridge, Oxon, Cantab, Michaelmas Term, lent Term, Hilary Term, n Trinity Term
Rakyat no longer “Buy” the goverment similanchiau plan no more. The harder the rakyat endure in current economy glitch, moment in surviving their daily end meet, is the end of Bn/Umno rule. Rakyat susah cari makan, shoulder with family commitment therefore, vote for alternative party in hoping new lease of living chances. My suggestion to Bn/Umno goverment are;
1) What is the rakyat need most in current situation?
2) How to stimulate our current economy crisis?
3) Bn/Umno should stop playing religion and ketuanan melayu cards.
4) Fight corruptions by letting MACC and PDRM free hand to run.
To answer above questions, first thing goverment must do is release the EPF money.
Wait until 55 years only be allow to withdraw is too late not only to rakyat but to your goyang kerajaan too.
Rakyat instantly relieve from debts to banks and positively drive stimulate our economy, then everybody would thumbs up to the goverment.
