(Speech by Dr Chen Man Hin, DAP life adviser to members of the Hakka Association of Negri Sembilan in Seremban on 13th December 2009)
I am most honoured to be invited to attend the formation of the Negri Sembilan Hakka Association, which will include all the hakka clans to form a single body.
Hakkas originated from Kwang Chow and Fukkien provinces, and are comprised of several clans, Moi Kong, Fui Choo, Char Yong, Hoi Look Foong
Although mandarin is the common language, there are different dialects among the chinese in Malaysia.
Dialect | Population |
---|---|
Hokkien | 1,848,211 |
Hakka | 1,679,027 |
Cantonese | 1,355,541 |
Teochew | 974,573 |
Mandarin | 958,467 |
Hainanese | 380,781 |
Min Bei | 373,337 |
Foochow | 249,413 |
Total | 7,819,350 |
Hakkas are known for their courage, discipline and hard working habits. As Malaysians they will continue to unite and educate their children to be useful citizens of their country, Malaysia.
MALAYSIANS OF ALL RACES ARE LOYAL AND WANT A BETTER LIFE FOR THEIR CHILDREN.
Although Malaysian Chinese have different dialects, they are all Malaysians and their loyalty is fully committed to Malaysia. Although they form a minority of 25%, their contribution to the political, economic and social development can be very meaningful and substantial.
That goes the same for all other communities, the malays, indians and other indigenous communities. They want justice, democracy and opportunities to gain a better way of life. The people worry about the recession, the corruption, cronyism, no rule of law and inequality, which are bringing hardship to the unemployed and the poor.
There are no signs that life is getting better. All the promises made by PM Najib about 1 Malaysia, no corruption and more opportunities are not delivered.
THE LOST DECADE. The situation is very serious, and this probably prompted the Deputy Minister of Finance to declare that the period after the Asian Crisis 1997, the country’s economy has not improved. He said that the 10 years after 1997 was a LOST DECADE! His revelation is nothing new. The DAP has been saying the same thing for many years. However the Deputy Minister of Finance’s statement was only a half truth.
THE COUNTRY HAS NOT LOST A DECADE, BUT HAS LOST TWO GENERATIONS.
Ever since the launching of the NEP in 1971, the economy has stagnated, there was mass migration of talent, shameful waste of human capital through a faulty educational system which discouraged meritocracy, and mass migration of skilled people to couintries like Australia and Singapore.
ACTUALLY THE COUNTRY HAS LOST TWO GENERATIONS BECAUSE OF THE NEP

THE FIGURES TELL THE STORY OF HOW THE MALAYSIAN FELL FAR BEHIND THE ‘FOUR ASIAN TIGERS’. THE STAGNATION BEGAN IN 1971, THE YEAR THAT THE NEW ECONOMIC POLICY WAS LAUNCHED BY TUN RAZAK, FATHER OF PM NAJIB.
The NEP stifled economic development, because investors, both local and foreign found the NEP regulations unattractive and not business friendly. The prevalence of corruption and cronyism of the NEP made many Umno cronies rich, but the poor malays remained poor.
From 1971 to 2000, a period of 40 years, the BN government lived in their own world, and implemented policies which drove away investors, and depended on the revenue from oil and commodities to fund the restructuring of the economy and so that there would be no identification of race with economy.
WHY SOUTH KOREA, TAIWAN, HONG KONG AND SINGAPORE BECAME THE ASIAN TIGERS? BECAUSE THEY EMBRACED FREE MARKET POLICIES.
Analysts say that between 1980 and 2005. The world embraced free market policies. These caused living standards to rise sharply, educational standards rose, poverty declined and democracy improved, and life expectancy rose.
China is the leading example of the miraculous effects of free market policies. Former Premier Deng Xiao Peng is the father of the success of the economy in China because he launched off a free market policy in 1978.
PM Najib can repeat the same miracle for Malaysia. Would he choose the free market way or would he walk away and return to the old policies of the NEP, cronyism, and corruption.
The ball is now at the foot of PM Najib. Will he do the right thing, so as Malaysia can join the rise of Asia movement?
There has been many anecdotal evidences that clearly demonstrate that Malaysia has gone to the doghouses.
The country’s policies clearly pulls the country backward and not forward. Unfortunately, UMNO knows it but is so afraid that by unwinding their policies, they know that the non-malays will catch up and overtake them real quick. Why ? They are just not the type that can compete in a level playing field.
You can talk till the cows come home but that is the fact of the matter.Hence their policies of intimidation with Malay rights, ketuanan Melayu etc.
Just listen to their public speeches and you know where I am coming from.
But intellectually, some people just don’t have a grasp for things.
The ball is now at the foot of PM Najib and he is kicking it from his left foot to his right and back and has been at it for the millionth and one time.
Dont expect changes. We are all in District Nine. Umno’s District Nine!
When the Tunku kicked Singapore out of Malaysia, he thought that Singapore would kneel down and beg to be reincorporated on Malaysia’s terms. The figure seems to put Malaysia to shame. With so much natural resources, it can’t even come near to Singapore which does not even have water supply, much less any natural resources. What then is Ketuanan Melayu? Don’t they feel any shame?
The reason we are in this pathetic state is because we are using skin power when the Asian Tigers were using brain power.
If there had been no Chinese in Malaysia, I reckon the PCI would be less than USD 500.
Is this article the Hakka Clan Association scolding the Malays for not being as good at racism as they are?
If ever there was a coded message about everything that is wrong with Malaysia…
Its funny but I remember leaving Malaysia for SIngapore to study in the 1970s. That was the first wave. When I got to university, there was another wave of people who showed up in Singapore, Australia and US. Now, everyone I know sent their kids at primary-secondary school to Australia, UK and US or China – Singapore only if you can’t afford it. Everyone I know plan to retire elsewhere with their kids…
Two generation? Its already gone. We are seeing the third generation lost.
Rojakman:
Only to foreigners is there a coded message. Everything that is wrong with Bolehland is clearly spelt out by Dr Chen. All the BN minority parties know it, but they can’t say it. UMNO knows it too, but of course they can’t say it for fear of losing their grip on power.
Is there some towering Malay in UMNO who can stand up and acknowledge the injustices of the past and steer the ship in the right direction ? It’s probably wishful thinking but for those non-Malays who don’t have much of a choice in retiring elsewhere for lack of money and opportunities, the wishful thinking may be the only straw they can grasp upon.
Skin power vs brain power.
Good analogy Dap man!
Najib is no differenet than other former PMs. “Ketuanan Melayu” is still their priority. Who cares about democracy, meritocracy and free market? They just simply live in their world of fantasy.
Muhyiddin will tell you: if you don’t like Malaysia, just leave and don’t come back again! How arrogance he is!
Skin power, brain power, all useless one. Best is c4 power, which is capable of sending Altantoo to the great cosmic beyond. Kabooomm and you are gone. As Mao says, “Power comes from the barrel of a gun”
Just listen to Moo-Hee-Din. He now wants UMNO to go on a roadshow to win the hearts and minds of the Malays. A few months ago, his boss was telling everyone how UMNO must win the hearts and minds of all Malaysians. So far, what we have seen is that Najis wants 1Malaysia while Moo-Hee-Din and Utusan Malaysia want 1Malay. Is this compatible ?
Malaysia is like a cruise liner that is heading towards a waterfall like Niagara Falls. All the passengers on the cruise liner are enjoying themselves, partying day & night. The captain of the ship (NR) can see it with his own eyes. Can he turn the ship around in time to avoid the waterfall? As a cruise liner, it will takes 2-3 miles to stop the ship like what happened in 2012 show.
Don’t think so as when you can see the waterfall, it will be too late. The cruise liner (Msia) will be heading for it and goes over the waterfall with a great splash. It will make world headlines. The captain (NR) will board the helicopter to fly to safe land leaving the all the passengers to go down with the ship. You all die better than I die
What is the problem….UMNO melayu are most talented not in the field of commerce but, with twisted tongues that will convincingly bohon their way to false glory!
In Australia they say, “She’ll be right, mate”
Just listen to Moo-Hee-Din
What is that Godfather? It appears to be too close to 1Malaysia for it not to be in competition, or at least a distraction. I like the way he equates ‘people’ with ‘Malays’. Is 1Malaysia over and they’re going back to basics?
Yes, 1Malaysia is over because they have realised they are putting the cart before the (dead) horse. Only the non-Malay parties in BN are vociferous about 1Malaysia. It’s their way of grasping at straws.
The end is nigh..the final stages of the slippery slope to oblivion will happen very quickly. Najis’ advisors know it so they are pushing for a snap election to enable their boss to ride out the tempest.
South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong n Singapore appreciate Confucian values n talents
Here we reap/deserve what we sow
US$7,000 PCI, not bad loh
Godfather is right. The end is near and umnoputras knew it. Therefore, PR must be ready for the coming task. Take heed of Dr Rojak’s words. PR must crank up all efforts and show clear, comprehensive and workable (at least on paper) governing policies and directions for the country. The DAP budget is one good step. What about foreign policies, immigration policies, environmental policies, foreign investment incentives, etc etc. Tell us.
Engineer Law Jenn Dong was charged 4 making 24 false claims involving a total sum of RM122.267 million
What dialects does he speak?
Did he act on his own or did his boss tell him: Just claim lah, write any amount, n I’ll OK them
Another big fish caught by our indomitable MACC. There’ll be other big fishes to come – the in-house legal officer, the accountant, the accounts clerk, and the office boy that facilitated the paper trail for this offence.
Those charged are called the ‘big fish’ and all are BN Chinese. Then the BN Malays must be the sharks.
Why are they being protected?
I have to distinguish the Malays since the non-BN Malays are just as poor as us.
You are just sick of these UMNO bast…….* They want to be Tuan anddemand to be Tuan and yet they are not doing anything to get them to where the want. They just want to have the crutches left and right. Shameless creatures.
Just tell me why today, a guy from Singapore holding S$1 walks across the causeway gets to spend RM2.50 while a guy from Johor Baru holding RM1 walks across the same causeway but only gets to spend S$0.40? Isn’t Malaysia blessed with so many resources that Singapore doesn’t have? Then why are we so much poorer than Singaporeans?
Most malays remain poor becasuse umnoputras have indoctrinated them to think religion first, race second ,4 wivies third, quantity(not quality) number of children fourth, guaranteed jobs and economic successes (NEP) fifth and sixth, they are the master of this wealthy country.I think given an other 10 to 15 years time under Umno/Bn regime, when our oil resources are all gone, the malays would become the slaves and beggers of this country.
Frankyapp, I think its more like umnoputras have indoctrinated them with the belief that as long as they remained as tuans it is actually alright for them to be poor.
Of course there are three distinct levels of tuanship. The ordinary Tuans. Next, the Tuan McBullys. Finally, the Tuan Rempit McBullys. These terms define (in reverse order) umnoputras (only seen once in five yrs otherwise, in silhouette behind darkened car windows), umnoputra wanabes and ordinary malays.
All of us hv no quarrel with the Tuans. They are nice malaysians. Polite and helpful. And to a large extent the Tuan McBullys too are nice people, socially speaking. Look. Umno has 3million members. Not all of them are bad or harbour ill intention towards the rest of us. If properly guided, these two groups of people could be nation builders and tax contributors.
The Tuan Rempit McBullys are the real badies – the decepticons sent by the Fallen to destroy our sun. They are people like toyo-the-indon and ahmad-the-pendatang and the hey-wots-soaking-man man. There are many others.
Malaysia is a “handicapped” society and will soon go “bank-ka-lup” when the ringgit becomes worthless.
According to Kasim Amat, all those countries, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and HongKong, have all lost their “true identity” by becoming rich. Malaysia is very fortunate and still able to retain its true identity by by remaining poor!
