Najib speaks with forked tongue

By Kee Thuan Chye | Malaysiakini

Najib Razak contradicted himself in his speech last Thursday at the Umno General Assembly. He spoke of the all-embracing 1Malaysia concept on one hand and of the need to retain the New Economic Policy (NEP) on the other. The Native Americans in old cowboy movies might have said that he spoke with a forked tongue.

How can you have the NEP and at the same time say that we are all 1Malaysia? The NEP is exclusive to a particular group of people, and such exclusivity sets them apart. There is no 1Malaysia; there are 2Malaysias.

Does Najib not see that or is his 1Malaysia idea merely PR spin or marketing hype?

This central contradiction is what makes many non-Malays sceptical of what he is touting. The only non-Malays who will buy it are those who are not discerning enough or who are easily bought.

I’m almost tempted to include the Bagan Pinang voters in this category but their decision to support so strongly a politician with a corruption record in that recent by-election could be due to other concerns.

Why continue to have an affirmative action programme that is still based on race? Haven’t we moved on since March 8, 2008? How much different is Najib’s defense of the need for the NEP from that of his cousin Hishammuddin Hussein’s pre-March 8 keris-wielding pledge to defend it against adversaries? It’s merely less militant, that’s all.

Najib slammed the Malays who say they no longer need “crutches” and called them arrogant. He asked, “What about the Malays who still require help? Is it fair if the group who still need crutches are denied help?”

Why hasn’t he thought of providing help to people of all races who need “crutches”? Wouldn’t that be more in line with 1Malaysia? All he needs to do is look at the Malaysian Economic Agenda proposed by Pakatan Rakyat. Go back to basics – have an affirmative action programme based on need. Isn’t that the original intent of the NEP?

It looks like Najib was invoking the NEP at the assembly expressly to play to the Malay gallery, to ensure that his regular customers will remain faithful. Meanwhile, the non-Malay customers can wait. He will find some other occasion in the future to throw them small gifts and lure them to buy his merchandise.

That’s the kind of ploy we’ve been used to through the decades, but hasn’t it exceeded its sell-by date? Shouldn’t we reject it instead of fall for its trickery? Leaders of race-based parties like Najib must resolve their central dilemma – pander to their own race or be truly multi-racial. They can’t have it both ways.

This time around, Najib has chosen to stick with tradition. We must hold leaders accountable for their doublespeak. Similarly, we have to insist that Ong Tee Keat stick to his promise of resigning as MCA president now that a no-confidence vote has been taken against him.

If Umno is not racist…

At the Umno assembly, Najib also said that the Malays are not racist. He is absolutely right; they are not. But what about Umno? He said it is not racist too.

If Umno is not racist, why did it organise forums after March 8 in which Malays were warned that Malay power was being eroded and that Malay land had fallen into non-Malay hands?

If Umno is not racist, why does it maintain an indoctrination agency like the Biro Tata Negara (BTN) which inculcates in young Malay minds the idea of Ketuanan Melayu and wariness of the other races? (For more on the BTN, read Dr Azly Rahman’s chapter ‘On the Problem of Ketuanan Melayu and the Work of the Biro Tata Negara’ in the book Multiethnic Malaysia.)

If Umno is not racist, why does it allow the newspapers it owns, particularly in the Malay language, to run stories and commentaries that could easily be deemed seditious? Don’t tell me that it’s because Umno believes in the independence of the media and therefore does not intervene. I’ve been in journalism for more than 30 years and I know that’s a lie.

Najib also pointed out that the true meaning of racism lay in the apartheid policy that once held sway in South Africa. Well, he was not quite the pot calling the kettle black because it is true that Malaysia does not practise apartheid like the National Party of South Africa did. But why do non-Malay parents have to work so much harder to send their children for tertiary education? Why do they have to outsource such education overseas?

Why is there a restrictive quota for the intake of non-Malay students into our public universities? Why are there educational institutions that are strictly for Malays? And why was there so much hue and cry against Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim’s suggestion for Universiti Teknologi Mara to offer 10 percent of its places to non-Malay students?

Why is only a small percentage of government scholarships granted to non-Malays? Why do some non-Malay students who top their classes not get such scholarships? Do the non-Malays not pay taxes?

Why is the Malaysian Civil Service so understaffed by non-Malays? And of which race are the overwhelming numbers of high officials in the civil service, universities, police force, army and so on?

Is it not just a subtler form of apartheid that Malaysia practices? And is it not a fact that ours is one of only a few countries in the world that institutionalises racial discrimination? So, what is Najib talking about? Whom is he trying to fool? What nonsense is this 1Malaysia?

  1. u think the indoctrinated grass root die hards, civil servants and local warlords can have a paradigm change over night or at least by next GE?

the proof of the pudding will be apparent in
    1) annual PSD scholarship allocation
    2) university intake
    3) funding and recognition of vernacular schools
    4) treatment by individual group of civil servants towards members of public
    5) processing of blue IC applications (currently well utilised by a certain important minister)
    6) approval, aid and funding of all places of religious worship
    7) treatment by BN federal government towards all state governments whether BN or PR

  2. The Alliance government recognise that in percentage term, there were more Malays classified as poor than other communities, and thus Article 153 was provided in the constitution. That started the assistance programs for Malays whether they needed that or not. It should be recognised that the Malay leaders themselves were not able to specify exactly who Malays were. WE accept the classification of Malays based on Article 160 of the constitution which provide the characteristics as qualification to be Malay; language, religion and practice of Malay culture. Since the word Malay depends on language and religion, so the Malay culture has to be derived from do language-religion in a tautological sense. Hence any Muslim who speaks Malay habitually will be Malays, because Muslims culture plus language would qualify as Malay culture. Thus, 1.4 billion Muslims around the world will be classified as Malays if they become Malaysians.

The Alliance government could be hampered by the lack of information on the citizens and considered that by helping Malays, the poor Malays would benefit from the so-called affirmative programme.

Power struggle in 1969 after the election provided an excellent opportunity for coup d’etat to be enacted. To whitewash the cause of why the UMNO orchestrated violence, as detailed by Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad who recounted on what happened on the afternoon of May 13, NEP was formulated. The emergency rule allowed the government to implement policies which are unfair, and Tun Razak promised that the discriminatory policy would end in 20 years. It is now 40 years into the policy and counting.

Mahathir in an interview with BBC declared that there were Malays driving for Chinese tycoons and that proved that NEP had not achieved the objectives. It would have been easy enough at the time he spoke to identify those Malays who worked for Chinese tycoons, and made them work for Malay tycoons instead, or as taxi drivers, NEP objective would have been achieved.

ASLI in its report in 2006 concluded that Malays had at that time acquired more than 30% of corporate share capital. The government was up in arms against Dr. Lim Teck Ghee and the latter resigned the position as Director of ASLI, rather than doctored the results. The then PM AAB promised, Najib echoed the decision, that EPU would produce the evidence and the mythology in the computation of the infamous 30% to prove ASLI wrong. Three years have passed, and there is a change of PM, but EPU has yet to produce a convincing report that ASLI was wrong.

It is clear that NEP has over achieved it objectives.

Najib just announced that there are still Malays who needed NEP. I say find them. All Malaysians are on record, and if Najib would just state the criterion of Malays who still need help, there will be agencies, NGOs, who would be able to produce the list of the Malays who needed special assistance. They do not have to depend on the government apparatus created for the purpose of NEP. They can be adopted either by rich UMNO tycoons, or the Chinese tycoons would do the same. Give us a list of the criterion for Malays who needed NEP, and their welfare will be taken care of. Henceforth remove NEP, and remove all the regulations and agencies emanated from NEP.

That would prove that Najib did not speak with a forked tongue. It is up to Najib to show whether his tongue is forked while he speaks.

  3. As i said in another thread, “a reform compelled by the need to survive is never a real reform out from the heart. It is at most done grudgingly to buy time. If UMNO thinks of Malaysians, if UMNO has the heart for all Malaysians, the so-called reforms presently being tossed about should have been done years ago. Reforms have to be “forced on” and for this to happen, there must be awareness among the people and good men and women must have the means to convey and disseminate ideas, information and alternative policies.” Hence speaking with forked tongue is not surprising but is to be expected.

  4. Racism is an ugly word. UMNOputras practise it not to safeguard the interests of the Malays but to protect their vested interest. After 52 years of playing up the race card you don’t see one UMNOputra leader who is not a multi millionaire. But we certainly can see that the nunber of Malays who are poor and living from hand to mouth are more than the UMNO members. The Malays do not trust UMNO Baru anymore as is evident fron the 2008 GE
    results.

  5. Najib is a born crooked and dirty politician..that can lie naturally…..exactly like Mahathir.
Yes…Najib loves dirty politics….and that needs special art to twist and turn.
He is trying so hard to fool Malaysians at a higher level than Mahathir …but fail miserably.
Not only he contradicts ….his promises are useless.
His slogans are infact being made fun at by so many..that are not Malaysians…..knowing Malaysian affairs far too well.
Al Zeerara…Arab newscaster based in K.Lumpur.. {sorry if spelling is wrong}..had a one hour program on PKFZ RM12.5 billion ..exposing UMNO so well. Go view it at “The Middle Road” blog
UMNO have a trademark..to do as they like.
Most glaring to reveal his true colour is approving a guilty corrupted man…Isa for the by-election…when he promises to stamp out corruptions. That contradictions confirm Najib supports corruptions…as can also be reconfirmed…by his UMNO Presidential speech…more than one hour…not one word to stamp out corruptions.
Let all Malaysians think properly and not be fooled by words spoken to please Malaysians and yet…confirming there is “2 Malaysia” in UMNO all the tine.
UMNO ca never change,…no matter how hard they try to fool us.
It is a racist party…which denying is an art…that grows with their skin thicker and thicker …each year.

  6. Today i watched Astro Awani news channel and noticed the coverage of Samy vellu’s open house for deepavali.

It was so despicable seeing the politicians who lost in the last general elections including the host mr.semi value himself parade themselves as if they were some sort of prevailing calibrous leaders. Those included were tan sri koh tsu koon, sharizat, and few others.

it’s sad that a democratic society who voiced their selections are still unadhered to. How much would this defer to frank outright dictatorialship by this present government. It’s a joke!

  7. they all have sold their souls to the Devil a long time ago. And like their father of all lies, they will continue with their deceit, manipulation and murderous ways to stay in power.

The forked tongue umno serpents need to be stopped on its path. 1malaysia is for umno and the dacing gang only. All Malaysians will have no part in this.

  8. Headline news at Malaysikini exposing Najib….not worth one sen….with his “1Malaysia”…openly support one race from others.
What a poor liar he is.
Yip! Malaysians cannot be easily fooled and that argurs well with the future….that enough is enough and no matter how hard UMNO tries…changing the government will finally show voters “People’s Power” to politicians…and let all politicians know…we vote anyone in to work..not to try and boss us around.
Voters must be as smart as the Americans..which is actually not difficult….if we all think like Malaysians proudly…….and not by race..as if one owns all others.

  9. In ref to #8:

The law of the country must be changed that losers in the country’s General Election be disqualified from holding govt office. No back door biz be allowed – eg how can losers in Malaysia’s 2008 GE-12 eg Gerakan Chief Koh Tsu Koon, Wanita UMNO Chief Sharizat and MCA Wanita No.2 Chew Mei Fun be allowed in and given government jobs when the Malaysian electorates/rakyat have rejected them? Only their cronies need a job to survive?

Politicians from both sides of the divide to see to it that no election rejects/losers be given govt/govt releated jobs!

  10. Najibs hard hitting proponents that UMNO is not practicing apartheid is just trying to deflect what UMNO had been vehemently condemning others (South African white regime). Though it is clearly conspicuos but they will never admit as has been embedded in their culture.
The 1Malaysiawhich he is espousing is just sales talk hoping the non-Malays to buy into it. As what Hisapmuddin has once said ” you can bluff some people sometime but you cannot bluff all the people all the time”. We had enough of UMNO antics and come what may, just vote them out for a better future of all Malaysians..

  11. “ours is one of only a few countries in the world that institutionalises racial discrimination?” said Mr Kee.

I can’t think of another country in this 21st century that practises official discrimination !

Malaysia under Umno is the only one, truly assia !

How can we who are supposed to be the most developed in Asean, second only to Singapore, allow this to perpetuate for such a long time ?

Isn’t this an insult to all of us, Malays and non-Malays alike ?

If a person needs a crutch, it is right absolutely we give it to him ! It is absolutely wrong if you do not give it to him because he was not born of the right race !

Umno claims to be Islamic. Is this consistent with Islamic justice ? Tell me, Najib and Hisham !

  12. Time will tell whether Najib’s reform is genuine or not. The non-Malays, except a few gullible ones, are not stupid. They can see and sense whether Najib’s reform carries weight and substance.

  13. What is there to wait for time to tell…yhsiew?
You mean…if Najib is genuine…Malaysians forget the 30 years corruptions… double standards and vote UMNO again in 13th GE?
You mean more than 54 years by UMNO not good enough?
You mean…no one is better than UMNO?
You mean your vote is all powerful..or are you just another voter……using your vote selfishly….with fear no peace and harmony without UMNO.
    You mean…you support corruptions too?

  14. It was so despicable seeing the politicians who lost in the last general elections including the host mr.semi value himself parade themselves as if they were some sort of prevailing calibrous leaders. Those included were tan sri koh tsu koon, sharizat, and few others. – tenaciousB

They are all the same colour.
Regardless of whether they’re in UMNO, MCA, MIC, GERAKAN or the other component parties.
UMNO is adamant that these disgraceful politicians stay by hook or by crook!

  15. ya Najis, keep ur NEP and “ketuanan melayu” and bahasa melayu to compete globally……you expect those in the east and west to learn bahasa melayu to compete with your Malaysian graduates who speaks and understand only bahasa melayu?

local malay grads can only find jobs in 1Malaysia, NOT globally.

you know very well without NEP, bn/umno will be history long time ago.

  16. That our PM speaks with a fork tongue is true as one could not possibly reconcile 1Malaysia with maintaining NEP. While we are very, very focused on the 1Malaysia aspect, we do not seem to pay very much attention to the second part of the slogan: “Performance Now.”

Najib has to show that he can put together sound economic programmes to steer Malaysia out from the economic slump that the entire world is facing. Only when he can expand the economy can he keep everybody happy. If he is unable to do that 1Malaysia coupled with NEP will have to be at the expense of somebody and the resulting discontent will be the end of BN.

Hence while it looks good to have nice slogans, Najob does not have the luxury of time on his side for the 13GE is not far away…

  17. Until and unless umno undertakes integration rather than containment, dialogue rather than isolation, cooperation rather than unilateralism, the power of law rather than the law of the powerful, 1malaysia will be a stinking piece of cowpie to all and sundry.

  18. He is a low-class leader (“No-Class” if compare to Singapore leaders), while his supporters are “mentally-handicapped” due to prolong consumption of NEP drugs.
The economy will collapse, and 1 USD = RM1000

  19. johnnypok :
He is a low-class leader (”No-Class” if compare to Singapore leaders), while his supporters are “mentally-handicapped” due to prolong consumption of NEP drugs.

Classy joke my man! It may well end up that way given our economic growth retardation the last 6 yrs now, even vietnam is overtaking us= 1 viet dong = 1000ringgit soon.LOL!

Back to our discussion about Najib and his 1Malaysia. We all know for a fact once again UMNO is trying the all talk and no action method which in a way has sustained them this far obviously not with significant casualties.

I say it’s time all malaysians in the coming 13th GE vote them out for good. It’s goin to be much easier since MIC and MCA are irrelevant to any and to even the not that bright malaysian joe. Vote them out and let the opposition prove their point and if they don’t do what they claim, vote them out as well and hopefully some other clown comes along for another audition!

  20. johnnypok… please remove the handicapped people never share the anything with him. also never supported him, yeah he is low class but not the handicapped groups. this PM never treat well to those peoples. so no way man.. none benifit thing they wont do it. handicapped is not stupid but smart lor.. haha

  21. 1Malaysia is for all? UMNO is not racist? Be humble in accepting the victory of the by-election in Bagan Pinang?

He has such a forked tongue. Many times we can see the inconsistency in his words and actions.
There is no sincerity and singleness in his speaking. He is just like a devil is putting on a mask of an angel.

Do not be deceive by his so-called humility and so-called care for people and the poor. He is not total unlike Mother Teresa who was such a humble and caring person who spend nearly her whole life caring and living among the sick, the poor and the unfortunate in India. Her actions spoke very louldly than words. She won the Nobel Peace Prize and India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.

Well said, we must all remember and if not keep reminding ourselves that the altantuhya case in still unresolved and yet this chap gets elected as the PM?

  23. The rejects from BN,MIC,MCA who still dare show themselves in the limelight should be publicly humiliated in the coming general elections by altogether renouncing the BN government and let this be a lesson to the PKR as well if they plan to follow suit when they take over unless there are new contenders before the 13 GE.

  24. Observe the way NR speaks at the UMNO GA. His body language tells a lot about his personality and honesty. In other words, a big liar! The same can be said about the other UMNO big wigs, men and women.

  25. His body language was exactly like that big mouth krismoodin…….so desperately dramatic…so forceful….so much acting.
We know..such speakers are fighting for their lives to survive…and to get support for their positions. Krismoodin is gone…not important.
    When will Najib join him?
His whole speech..exposed so much contradictions of what he promised or said…he will do..are all lies.
kopitiam fellas knew all these all along…that “1 Malaysia” is pure nonsense.,
He is out to fish votes with his low class performance that only corrupted crooks will appreciate another corrupted crook…since all crooks must unite to protect each other..or else…gone case.
It elected Najib to be the leader …because crooks were actually being exposed by Abdullah…but that idiot talk alot…no actions….also..but damage is done.
Now…Najib bring UMNO back to it’s glorious days…to continue Mahathir’s legacy faithfully…and that is race and religion dirty politics plus encouraging corruptions.
The irony is…mamak wants to clean up his filthy dirty name…by advising UMNO to stamp out corruptions..and even disagree to put Isa as candidate.,
Now this old crook change his tone..to support his adopted son. Love is blind…..hahahahaha
It shows…anything UMNO do to win an election is right…as UMNO is desperate..and Mahathir knows that too well….yet he put out a smiling face..to show his natural god gifted crooked personality….all written in his face too.
Yes…UMNO is back to his old ways…and Najib is trying to fool Malaysians with new tactics…with slogans and sweets and good news.
One keep forgetting…..if there are actually good news such as lots of money to be given out or for developments…these are not from UMNO at all. These are profits earned from our natural resources and export businesses.
UMNO loves o take all credits….or thinking…all money belongs to them..to do as they like.
Such is the party some have elected to govern our country….for no benefits to them at all…except weak minds do fall into evil traps..being caged and cannot move.
Those who have escape the nets of UMNO devilish agendas are very lucky and plenty.
Those who are well educated will never fall into these traps. They can think for themselves.
Put all together…UMNO can never fool the majority Malaysians…….no matter how hard they try.

  26. This is no shocker. Most politicians generally speak with forked tongue. Whether they are from ruling party or opposition. Even the popular US President Obama!

Their objective is to win/maintain positions and power. They have often to contend with groups having diametrically opposed interest. They need the maximum votes from all sides so they sing different tunes to different audiences to be popular. One can’t have the truth both ways except when one’s a politician.

Since when has politician’s objective been to put great weightage in the truth and sincerity in what they say?

This line is from block buster movie ‘The Hunt for Red October’ (starring Sean connery & Alec baldwin) in which secretary of state tells CIA analyst Ryan played by Baldwin:”Mr. Ryan I am a politician which means I’m a cheat and a liar. And when I am not kissing the babies, I am stealing their lollipops…I’d always hedge my bets bothways…”

  27. Its not the forked tongue I worry about, its the mushy brain he has that I worry about. The kind of crap he spews up just is insulting to someone with half a brain..

The US paid a huge price for the mediocrity of George Bush Jr. and Najib is our very own George Bush Jr.. The things he has done will lead us all to hell.. And its already likely done.. The so-called reform of UMNO he is so proud of is intellectual mediocrity at its best. 140,000 UMNO members does not represent Malaysia and its tradition of moderation and responsibility.. Its represent more the right wing of this country.. In the end we are going to have the likes of Isa Samad, Ahmad Ismail will run the party..

This country is going down the toilet first before it will find its path and thanks to Najib who broke the Mahathir-corrupted dam of Malay elitism.

  28. And now he said..”We can only progress if we embrace 1 Malaysia”
Is should be…”Umno can only win the 13th GE if Malaysians believe in my 1 Malaysia”
    Than…it makes sense.
After so long…”1 Malaysia” is revealed!!’
    It is…”1 voice..1 dream…..1 hope….1 Malaysia”
That is also making sense…talking to UMNO members.
Presuming…he is speaking to all Malaysians.
Lets see…what “! voice”…. all voices against UMNO are shut up. All news in papers are propaganda and advertising work…telling half truths. What he meant was 1 voice..his voice only.
This “1 dream” is so true for UMNO members.
Lets again presuming.. he is talking to all Malaysians.
I say….kopitiam fellas are not easily fooled and Najib can stop dreaming he can keep fooling Malaysians with low class politics…giving false dreams..especially to Muslims..
Then…”1 hope”….ah yes…since Isa is back..the only 1 hope is for UMNO to keep corruptions alive.
Then again…presuming he is talking to all…what “1 hope” is he talking about…..when he clearly said..in UMNO AGM ..that he will continue the NEP which is long ago should be given up.
He uses 19.2% figure as gospel truths…and all Malaysians must believe in him.Proven by others professionally…NEP have exceeded more than 30%…not important. UMNO always tell the truth…and we must believe it is 19.2%…so there is a long long way to achieve the 30%…after more than 54 years.
Actually he should tell all that to the Marines…always at the sea…and may simply believe in him…as he is the Commander in Chief.
How can he dare to lie.
Bush did…who is Najib thinking he is better than Bush..as a sincere politician.
Bush proven liar…but at least…he does treat all Americans equal..and freedom of speeches and rights are legendary in USA.
Why do UMNO politicians keep learning all the wrong things to apply in Malaysia.
    Yip…”1 voice ..1 dream..1 hope”
Slogans did sell alot of products by commercial firms.
Will Malaysians be tricked to keep buying UMNO kok and bull?

  29. ktteokt :He is trying to have the best of both worlds, pleasing both BUMIPUTRAS and NON BUMIPUTRAS in Malaysia! Is that POSSIBLE??????

Why not? Simple. He is dead set on pleasing all umnoputras in all ways and manner (so that they all have oversize bodies and huge mansions and palaces to live in). And all of these are at the expense of non-umnoputras. Nothing new. Really. Of course he also has to take care of his popularity and the votes umno would get in GE13. And he does it by duping non-umnoputras into thinking that they have not been left out in his grand scheme. And how does he do this. By sloganeering of course. I think he is just an idiot for doing all these. And stupid too.

BTW, speaking of najib’s forked tongue, ever wonder what it looks like? “W” There you are. His tongue!

  30. Najib has failed Economics 101. That’s my observation.

Look 1 Malaysia must build capacity and efficiency, productivity and quality resources. How can Najib stick to a stale, age-old policy that has kept the Bumis in fetters, dependent and inefficient so that UMNO elites can rip off the nation’s coffers becos so many of their kind believe their lies, are hoodwinked continuously and are ‘deliberately’ poorly educated by a failed education system so that these voters will remain enslaved.

I see a legion of devils at work. And Najib is no angel. He will make a bad PM. Yes, he’s got a horribly forked tongue, curling around …voters,….what else? U tell me!

  31. The only muslim country in the world to celeberate Hari Raya for one month in the world is Malaysia. Those who invented the religon and thought to the locals who were without any religon only celeberate for 2 days in Middle East.

The amount the money spent on all the lavish open house for last one month could have been given to the hard core poor Malays to last for at least a year.

No productivity from the Malays for 2 months every year. How can the country prosper or achive 2020?

  32. Samy Volu is a thick skin ‘badak’ to have open to carry bo… .

For the last 12 years I invited all the Malay family around my house for Deepavali, I had to carter the food cooked by Muslim even though I am not one.
When they arrive, the bring along not only their family but their relations and friends.
Lately I realised that they never invite me and my family for any of their functions even though my house is just meters away .

This year I made a lavish open house and never invited any of them. They were just watching the fun and were wondering.

    1Malaysia?
