Najib’s swearing-in as PM on Friday – how can when royal consent not yet given for Abdullah’s resignation?

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz has confirmed that Cabinet Ministers, Mentris Besar and Chief Ministers have received invitations to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Datuk Seri Najib Razak as the country’s new Prime Minister at Istana Negara on Friday.

This raises the question whether the royal prerogative of the Yang di Pertuan Agong to appoint the next Prime Minister has been overlooked or disregarded when the King is presented with the fait accompli of the swearing-in ceremony for Najib as the new Prime Minister at Istana Negara on Friday when the royal consent for Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s resignation has not been given.

In his winding-up speech at the Umno General Assembly on Saturday, Abdullah announced that he will meet the Yang di Pertuan Agong tomorrow (Thursday), saying:

“God willing, the proper handover ceremony will be arranged once Tuanku has consented to my desire to resign.”

What happens if the Yang di Pertuan Agong does not consent to Abdullah’s desire to resign or needs time to discharge his royal prerogative?

In the circumstances, isn’t it presumptuous as well as contempt for the royal prerogative of the Yang di Pertuan Agong to appoint the Prime Minister as provided by the Constitution to schedule the swearing-in ceremony for Najib to become the new Prime Minister at Istana Negara on Friday when the Yang di Pertuan Agong has not met Abdullah and given his consent for Abdullah’s resignation?

Explanations from both Abdullah and Najib on these extraordinary developments are fully warranted.

    Bloggers should contact LKS’s (and other blogs) admin team when they plan to conduct an online petition or any other form of action. Ask if they would do a write-up and direct ALL readers to ONE single petition or ONE single action. What we want is ONE single mega STORE…NOT a pasar malam of single, petty traders making nothing but noise.

    We NEED to work as ONE unit.

    I suggested a while back that we launch a black arm band or button badge campaign (non-aggressive, non verbal) to voice our rejection of the in-coming PM to our Agong. I made this suggestion to you BECAUSE I am a nobody. I can scream till I mati, and nobody will pay attention, but ONE single post from you Uncle Kit (or RPK or any other big fish) can spark a fire that rages.

    DON’T YOU THINK THE NATION (ESP THE AGONG) WOULD TAKE NOTICE OF HALF HIS RAKYAT WEARING BLACK ARM BANDS?

    There is an army out there waiting for your (or RPK or Anwar’s) command. Let’s do SOMETHING TOGETHER.

    Instead, here I am like all my other comrades, wasting my precious typing comments in blog after blog after blog, going NO WHERE.

  3. Najib arm-twisted the palace in Perak and now trying his luck again. These are the same people who “Derhakakan” Nizar and called the Opposition leaders traitors for not accepting to resign.

    But it’s OK if they prearrange the swearing-in of Najib for Friday even without the King’s consent so that we can now have two Prime Ministers.

    The King has all the more reason to thaw Najib’s evil designs to force upon the palace to do his bidding. Najib can arm-twist the EC, MACC, AG, and the Police but can he do the same with the King?

    How low can you go Najib?

  5. There is an sms this morning that says that the Perak Sultan has finally consented to the dissolution of the State Assembly, obviously after taking advice from constitutional experts that support the Perak Speaker’s position.

    It would be strange indeed if the new PM is sworn in after having been proven to act unconstitutionally.

Writing and commenting around the blogs to inform and educate people is only so much small insignificant people like us can do.     I sent it. No I didn’t. I considered it, when I noticed it was April 1st while I was still working at 2:30 this morning. That’s a good one. I was going to send one that said Najib had decided that he’d had enough of everybody saying “swirling … murky … questionable” and had dissolved parliament for a general election to demonstrate the faith the rakyat had in him.

  8. Rosie consulted a fengshui master, who obviously said that friday is no go, because it’s 4th day of the 4th month. Monday is also no go because it is the official ching ming date under the Chinese calendar. April 7 is by-elections day, and if Najis loses all three, it could well be bye-bye Mongolian.

    3rd of April seems to be the only viable day. Pak Lah and the Agong not notified ? Small matter. Who dares interfere with Rosie’s destiny ?

  12. When people have been arrogant and abusing their power to have whatever the want with ease, they can no longer think rationally or to be humble. Old habits die hard.

    By confirming the date of Najib’s installation as PM even before HRH makes his decision whether to accept AAB’s resignation is tantamount to insulting HRH, showing scant regard for his POWER. Indirectly, what these UNMO leaders doing is like letting HRH know that he must make Najib the PM because they want him to.

    People with such thinking and mentality will eventually turn against the Royal Institution. Mahatir took away the Rulers’ personal immunity. Fortunately, he did not have things his way otherwise he would have totally abolished the monarchy.

    Another example to show that they have little regards for king and country is their calling the Paramount Ruler “Raja Natang” when the king made a decision which was in their favour.

    A sad truth in the saying: “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”

    It’s about time the present king cut these arrogant UMNO leaders to size and teach them humility which is one of the most important tenets of Islam.

    I’m going to be devil’s advocate. I doubt you can unite. You don’t have a common goal – you have a common bogeyman. LKS has his own goal, which is only roughly congruent with any of the other groups or individuals making similar noises from time to time.

    While LKS could lend his backing to any of these projects, I’d be surprised if he would lead them himself. He’s an elected MP close to the top of an opposition party. The things you’re suggesting are jobs for grassroots activists, or awareness / lobby organisations.

    Have you considered ‘going legit’? I mean, registering as a charity, borrowing an office somewhere in KL, and lending the projects your own organisation’s credibility? This is your moment at the crossroads. This is your chance to poke your head up out of the trench into the whizzing bullets.

    Chances are your office would be raided in a few months, all your computers and files taken ‘for evidence’, and a series of financially destructive court appearances would start. On the other hand, it could all go really well, the PR government would make you all Datuks, you’d receive invitations for lucrative speaking tours all around the world, and you’d live the proud life of someone who really made a difference.

    The problem with vesting all your hopes in a single person is that after that person takes the power you swept him to, they themselves might go gila kuasa and there would still be no civil society to stop them. I’m a bit of a newcomer to politics. I would have been 70 before I’d paid it any interest, if my phone worked. In my naive view, one of the things Malaysia is sadly lacking (besides working phones) is civil society. That’s something you could do.

    Hmmmm. Could take alot of time. Maybe better if he just summon Parliament and asks for a confidence vote.

    In the meantine, Pak Lah will continue as PM.

    Najib should be relieved. My Chinese friends say it is “sway” to take over during the Chinese All Souls Period as there might be unhappy and restless souls out to trouble him. Maybe its just as well he takes over immediately. After all he is a Ghostbuster and he “aint afraid of no ghosts”.

  20. Najib’s original intent of swearing in as the Prime Minister of Malaysia on 3 April 2009 may not be workable. I guess it is going to have some delays in the decision of the Yang Dipertuan Agong for accepting Pak Lah’s resignation. I don’t believe that Malaysia’s rulers are just the puppet who will accede to whatever demands of the top politician without discrimination. If it is the prerogative of the Agong on whether to accept or not to accept the resignation of a Prime Minister, then the Agong will definitely have the discretion to cause a delay in His Majesty’s final decision. Moreover, as a matter of royal courtesy, the Agong may want to seek the opinion of other rulers in the Ad Hoc Conference of Rulers.

    Najib may have to wait a bit longer in order to become the new Prime Minister of Malaysia. At least Najib has to wait for a decison being made by the high court judge on the case of Nizar Versus Zambry, which is fixed to be heard at 2:30 pm 2 April 2009. This is because the court ruling in such a case is quite likely going to draw a clear-cut line on the power of the rulers.

    I strongly believe that the requirement for a vote of confidence in the legislature shall be made a case law for all future Menteri Besars and future Prime Ministers to follow in order to uphold the rule of law in Malaysia. I believe the rulers of Malaysia will be wise enough of wanting the uphold of the rule of law because the operationability of the privileged royal pardon systems shall require the proper functioning of the rule of law.

    The rule of law is the only viable method to ensure the long-term survival of the political system of constitutional manarchy in Malaysia.

  23. To date, I still believe, despite our differences, there are some common hopes and common dreams that bind us together that will never break.

    Hoping the country to move forward with good leaders is certainly one of the common dream and hope. None of the PR and good will leaders from BN willing to take this common hope and common dream to unite the people and demanded that we deserved better leaders.

    It’s not that we are writing about these now, we were writing about this many months ahead, we gave suggestions (lots of them), but all our politicians just caught with events and chances to continue discrediting the other side without looking into the long term.

    We are all at fault, our previous generation are even more guilty for allowing this rampant destructive culture for than 50 years. Our generation has to do so much to clear up for our previous generation mistakes: we have to save the earth, correct people perception and now we have to do our part to save the country — eventually everything falls back on our generation.

    Definitely, Abdullah is wise at this occasion because he understands very well that he has no power to decide when Najib shall be appointed as the new Prime Minister of Malaysia. The power of appointing a Prime Minister is vested in the hand of the Agong, based on the constitutional requirement which stipulates that the person to be appointed must command the majority of the lower house of the legislature, i.e. the Dewan Rakyat.

    Najib has to convince the Agong that he already commands the majority of the Dewan Rakyat before he can be appointed as the new Prime Minister of Malaysia.

    The title of this page does not make sense at all. PM Badawi has invited Najib to accompany him to his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong tomorrow, where he will seek royal consent to step down as premier.

    Najib specifically stated: “Subject to the Agong’s consent, then Friday will be the (swearing-in) ceremony. I haven’t had an audience with the Agong yet and hopefully he would graciously give his consent.”

    There is nothing to debate here, so why must Lim Kit waste our time with such frivilous matters!?

    WS was truly a great writer and like many great writers and poets, he drew inspiration from current and past events.
    Thus some characters were parodies of people the writers wanted to criticise and they did this in an oblique manner.

    Yeah, I studied Macbeth in 1966 but still some phrases can be recalled – we had excellent Lit teachers like Brother Vincent in St. Michael’s in Ipoh.

    There is another quote that is appropriate from Macbeth for AAB:

  36. If i’m not wrong, last night I heard news announced that the nana will follow the current PM to the palace today..is it true or april fool hahahhhahaha. If it’s true but why the nana is so kbc? is the nana wanna know everything, means won’t trust the PM.
