When the witness becomes the accused
Citizen Nades – By R. Nadeswaran

EVER WONDERED why the police force is unable to close files and solve crimes? Do you know why witnesses to crimes do not want to come forward? Why do witnesses suddenly have memory lapses and declare: “I did not see anything.” I got the answers yesterday. Two police officers from the Commercial Crime Division of Bukit Aman gave an insight into how investigations are carried out and I can tell you with a clear conscience that it was an exercise in futility because their line of questioning would have insulted the intelligence of any right-thinking person.
Assistant Superintendents Wan Zainal Wan Mat and Albany Hamzah turned up at the office and said that they needed to record my statement in relation to police investigations into the transfer of funds from Balkis. To say that they came ill-prepared would be an understatement. To say that they never read any of the reports in theSun or any other newspaper would be the bitter truth. They are supposed to be investigating the transfer of RM9.9 million, and yet had no clue as to how to go about doing the job. This is because they came with pre-conceived notions and pre-prepared questions, perhaps drafted by their superiors, in the hope that this writer would shoot himself in the foot by implicating himself.
After the caution was administered under the Criminal Procedure Code and the usual questions on my qualifications and my career, it was crystal clear they wanted me to reveal my sources and wanted documents in my possession. Not that I had run foul of the Official Secrets Act because none of the documents cited were classified, but they came on a fishing expedition to get me to expose my hand and to find out what is going to be published in the future. They expected me to sing like a canary!
Terence Fernandez and I looked at each other in despair when asked: Merujuk kepada petikan yang terdapat dalam artikel berkaitan dengan memetik kenyataan Yeo Yang Poh (former president of the Bar Council), dari manakah sumber petikan berkenaan diperolehi? (Your article had a quote from former Bar Council president Yeo Yang Poh. What is the source of the quote?) If only the two officers had cared to read the first paragraph of my report which was in front of their eyes they would have known where it came from – the Malaysian Bar website. But no, they had read nothing. What has Yeo’s comments got to do with their investigations?
They wanted to know if “I was instructed to write” and wanted to know if I had read the constitution of Balkis. If they had read all the reports on Balkis, they would have known that I quoted its constitution extensively. But no, they just cast the line hoping for a bite. The next question: Adakah kamu ada menyimpan perlembagaan Balkis. (Are you keeping a copy of the constitution) Did they expect a “Yes” from me? Even if I had it, does it make it an offence unless of course they thought they are putting the fright into me?
Are you in possession of a letter from the Registrar of Societies dated April 14 addressed to the mentri besar? Well, that’s not a classified document and even if I had it, would they have expected me to say: “Yes, I have it.”? They showed their hands too early and they thought they trumped me by asking: “You write that “according to documents sighted by theSun”, can you tell me what the documents are. My curt reply: “I cannot tell you because it is unethical for journalists to reveal what (documents) they saw or read.”
By which time, they had no more cards to play. They threw in the sai-lang card: “Dimanakah kamu dapat dokumen-dokumen berkenaan?” (Where did you get the documents from?”) Was this an investigation into Balkis or a probe to trace the source of my documents?
When they asked the final question, I blew my top because it not only became harassment but also bordered on stupidity. I was asked: Adakah kamu tahu siapa hakim bertindak sebagai penasihat undang-undang kepada Bakti sebagaimana yang dinyatakan oleh akhbar theSun? (Do you know the identity of the judge who acted as the legal adviser of Balkis?)
I asked the relevance of such a question. The answer was: ‘When the case goes to court, we need to answer all these questions”.
Don’t they read the newspapers? Didn’t theSun name the judge after which the Bar Council and the former UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers commented on it? My answer: “This was previously reported in theSun. Please refer to the papers.”
Don,t blame the poor police guys,They are just doing their work. When the big guy himself can lie in our face..Read todays star .No prove was found on the bringing in of the ink to our country. But i remembered the IGP himself said 4 men was caught bringing in the ink.As was reported in all the mainstream papers.
Hopefully the SUN will not end up like cousin MAKKAL OSAI .
I Knew it…..I knew it…….i knew it………$tupid………$tupid……$tupid…..poli$$$$$$$$$.
Seee…a proof of how $tupid they are. They are so $tupid, but they act as if they are…..wtf. Monkey see, monkey do.
UMNObn you are going down!!!!!!!
UMNObn you are sinking!!!!!!!
Kurang aJar, you are next.
Badak is being too nice. This is precisely the malaise that is inflicting this nation. People who have stopped thinking. Is it UMNO’s fault? They probably take a big share of the blame.
But also blame it on all us folks, across the racial divide. With a little initiative, they could have learned, become smarter. But no, we are a culture of teh tarik, tongkat ali and tidak apa. Even if Pakatan Rakyat forms Federal Government, we have a long, long, long way to go before taking our place amongst the developed nations, much less the great nations.
On the indelible-ink matter : Charge the persons who made the false report of the ink being paralelly brought in to sabotage the GE2008. How come the authorities are not investigating this matter further?
Aiyooooo, I can’t stand the stupidity of this bunch of uniformed fellows. Please la Mr.IGP can you please please teach your fellows, maybe you yourself need to go for some basic training.
Just because this is Malaysia, don’t make a mockery of yourself , your team and make others look stupid.
Next time if any of our English daily journalists involve, please help the police to engage an English translator. Or I give you another suggestion, Why not appoint Citizen Nades as your CID Director. I guarantee you every sen that you pay him would be well worth the cause. Nades could help you clean police image as well.
The Empire strikes back, …yeah like battered animals, they are desperate, trying to build another case for “sedition” charge against Citizen Nades?
indelible-ink …case closed??????????????????? How to vote for BN??????
i wonder what is the annual rate of solved cases – meaning really resolved cases not some wayang solution – vs the number of reported cases the pdrm achieved. that can be the competency index of the pdrm
In Malaysia, anyone who files a report against anyone from the component of BN will immediately be summoned to the police station for questioning before any investigation is carried out to investigate on the reported person or party.
That’s becos the Police are not independent. They are like “hound” who are obedients and listen to their master (BN). It’s been like that before, and after, overalls who appoint and interfere with the Police chief? who will be the next Police chief? who step in to interfere the appointment?

BN’s election tactic has always been these: (1) to the chinese, you better suppport MCA to safeguard your interests from within the BN for the opposition is not in a position to do that; (2) the indians, you jolly well do likewise; (3) the malays, remember always UMNO is the protector of your rights and privileges; and (4) all of you, vote opposition and there will be unrest and we will see another may 13.
Based on the election results, the chinese, indians and a surprisingly large number of malays (the urban and educated ones – correct me if I am wrong) said “we dont care”.
And more importantly, there is no unrest.
YES. NO UNREST. NO MAY 13.
In other words, the election results demonstrate the fact that BN was wrong with its tactic and approach to the core.
Let the wrong continue to trive within BN.
Do not give them a reason to argue their case.
Do not start another may 13.
Secret societies like Balkis have to remain secret.
Hellloooo…..There is a brain-drain in the police force. You cannot rely on them this days. They are more black sheeps than the white one! They talk about integrity but look at them…just like a cow been pulled by their nose or a dog…sit! doggie sit!…stand!stupid stand!.
If police need to upgrade their ever deteriorating standards, I would suggest the police to watch the Tv series program ‘LAW & ORDERS’ and understand how they cope with their daily situation and bring justice and confidence to the country…
To our fellow MCA,Gerakaninia,PPPuki and MIC..forego your partnership with the UMNO.
Let go..let go….and be free.
They can’t even help themselves now.
Are you going to sing and swim along with Umno?
U=Until M= Midnight N= No O= Outcome.
Always the same old story.. I always notice this. If there are high profile cases. Some big guns in the police force will call for a press release after afew days.” We have caught the person or persons involved,We considered the case close ” But after seven days the suspect is release without any fanfare. Even if the case go to courts the suspect is set free by the courts because the police has not done its work properly.Asked any lawyers, they will tell you, it is very often that important evidence had gone missing right under the noses of the police.
Blame it on the old fox Mahathir. He wanted political allegiance, so he sacrificed competence. He wanted to keep costs low, so he took in the worst of the worst. Look beyond the police force – the AG’s Chambers, the SC, the ACA, they are all riddled with incompetence.
Problem is that Badawi thinks the same way, so the rot goes on and on. Meritocracy starts from the very top, so we need to change at the very top.
What is this country coming to? Do they think we are all stupid like them. Maybe so because when some use ” Allah” they say it can confuse others. These others must be so easy to confuse and this is insulting their intelligence because I know a lot of intelligent others.People of Malaysia are fed up of this bias, corruption and usage of government machinery for the purpose of individuals. When they lose in elctions they place all sorts of obstacles in the way of the new administration. When they took action against the royals they say it is ok but when someone from the new administration does the same they say it is disrespect to the royals. When the people take to the streets in peaceful assemblies they say it is a riot but when their people do the same there is no sign of water cannons and tear gas.
PDRM is more familiar with “solving” crimes by beating up their suspects into admission or death whichever comes first.
Using brains to solve crimes is not in their mental makeup. And having to do hard work is even more alien.
Reading Sun every day make me sick. Not because the Sun’s duo, but ABB & gangs have keep disappointing the people.
They have been telling lies and keep telling lies about fighting corruption.
Today, in parliament Nazri say
maybe what he mean is the fish was to big for them to swallow. Maybe all are big fishes THEM SELVES but not fishermen to fish the BIG FISH?
THE GREATEST LIVING EXAMPLE OF INCOMPETENCE IN MALAYSIA TODAY – BODOHWI.
This was what NAzri say as quoted from the Malaysiakini:-
“it was impossible to be done in a short time for such a big thing like fighting against corruption”.
They are bunch of liars
When you lie one, you tend to keep lieiiing, this was the proof from BN. Corruption will stay as far as BN stay.
Samy Vellu is the biggest liar, when he say . Today he own successor proof him wrong. but it was too late. Nazri also follow suit to telling lie. Now this idiot say corruption is BIG THING, it take HEAVEN to fall before it can be FIGHT!!!!
QUOTED FROM MALAYSIAKINI:-
“We have no plan to enact any of these acts because although we have the Official Secrets Act, the cabinet can decide on anything that need to be declassified at anytime,” Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz said today.
Do you have hope NOW?
Barriers dismantled by Cheras residents again–Malaysiakini reported
Instead of spend time on fighting CORRUPTION, they have time to elect BARRIERS to chanell people money to the crony’s pockets.
Dear Nadeswaran,
Incompetence, I understand, but bad manners is another thing altogether.
Incompletence – I mean which 10 As student want to enter university just for the aim of being a policeman – which brilliant man wants to be a policeman? No, I don’t mean any offence, but look at the reality of things. My son 10 As and if he wants to join the police, I’ll faint.
But that does not take the need to be hardworking (do your work first) and being polite. A lot of things can be acheived by being polite. Interviewing and getting info from a criminal and a decent intelligent human being are two different things.
Now you know why the crooks don’t really have much respect for the police…
Nades, the best Malay brains get PSD scholarships to study overseas. Some don’t even return home. The second best get other forms of state and MARA scholarships to go to overseas universities. The next best brains go to local universities. Those which little brains join the civil service, namely teaching. Finally, those with no brans join the police force.
No you know why they don’t know the difference between witnesses and accused persons.
AG, IGP and PDRM are incompetent, unprofessional and a bunch of no brainers. If they have brains, competent and professional they would have solved the poor Mongolian girl’s murder by now.
“solved the poor Mongolian girl’s murder by now”
This is not a cheap case. It involved C4 which in Malaysia only govt. officials are authorize to dispense for the use of police.
The girls was tortured and raped, shoot twice then blown. Who knows, only god know, now god punished them so that ppl. go against the evil.
That C4 authorized by Najis seems to be helping, becos now, nobody can trace or proof whether the poor mongolian was tortured or been raped before he was shoot twice and imploded.
