(Media Conference Statement at DAP Ipoh Timur Ops Centre on Thursday 28th February 2008 at 1 pm)
I greatly regret that the caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has resorted to intemperate language in accusing the DAP of spreading lies in the 2008 general election campaign, as illustrated by today’s Sun front-page headline: “BN leaders on offensive – PM: Opposition Spreading lies to Undermine Barisan Unity” and Utusan Malaysia’s front-page headline “Pembangkang iri hati – Tabur tohmahan, fitnah kerana kejayaan BN tadbir Negara – PM”.
I do not want to respond in kind to reciprocate Abdullah’s intemperate language, or I will describe the 2008 Barisan Nasional (BN) Election Manifesto as a Manifesto of Lies and Falsehoods – with a very great difference, I will be able to prove my charge that the 2008 Barisan Nasional Election Manifesto is a Manifesto of Lies and Falsehoods while Abdullah will not be able to substantiate his ridiculous charge that the DAP is guilty of spreading lies to undermine BN unity.
I feel very hurt that Abdullah has accused me and other DAP leaders (who clearly fall under his strictures yesterday) of spreading lies to undermine him and the Barisan Nasional, when I had publicly expressed support for him to carry out his pledges when he became Prime Minister to create an accountable, efficient, incorruptible, people-oriented, democratic and just government.
I was criticized for not behaving like a proper Opposition leader in expressing support for Abdullah’s reformist pledges – but as far as I and the DAP are concerned, we are not in Opposition for the sake of Opposition but for what is good for the country, and we are prepared to praise the Prime Minister and the Barisan Nasional when they do right but will not flinch from out duty to criticize and even condemn the Prime Minister and the government for failures and wrongs to the people and country.
Immediately after the landslide Barisan Nasional victory in the 2004 general election, I was asked in a Malaysiakini interview how long I would give Abdullah to deliver his reform pledges – and I had said I would give him two years and would suspend judgment in the meanwhile.
Two years came and went and Abdullah failed to make any visible progress to deliver his reform pledges. I still withheld any expression of my disappointment, as I decided to give him another year.
This is why I feel strongly the injustice of Abdullah’s accusation that DAP leaders and I had told lies about him and the Barisan Nasional when I had bent backwards to be fair to him, giving him more time to fulfill his many reform pledges on becoming Prime Minister over four years ago.
I have said that I do not want to follow Abdullah’s intemperate language and describe the 2008 Barisan Nasional election manifesto as a manifesto of lies and falsehoods, although I am prepared to face Abdullah in a television debate to substantiate such a statement.
I have already highlighted the misrepresentation of the 2008 BN Election Manifesto with regard to the worsening problems of crime and corruption.
Let me refer to two points in an analysis of an economist on the BN 2008 Manifesto:
1. “Living standards even more directly correspond with individual earnings and household income levels. In fact, we already get a hint at the distribution of economic growth and the realization of benefits. The BN Manifesto reports that nominal household income increased from RM3,249 to RM3,617 over the period 2004-2007. That translates into an annual growth rate of 3.6%, and at an inflation rate of 2.6% over that period, real household income grew at 1.0% per year. One percent per year real income growth seems to correlate more closely with the struggle and anxiety of many households to make ends meet. Increases in civil servants’ pay and allowances may alleviate the situation, but that is a one-off effect.”
2. “The Manifesto did not say 1.3 million jobs – it said 1.3 million job opportunities. So, then, what is a job opportunity? Is it a job that is envisioned and planned, or is it a real job that pays? How do more ‘job opportunities‘ help unemployed graduates, alienated former plantation workers, dispossessed urban dwellers? Are we creating jobs too poorly paying that Malaysians are not interested, calling that opportunity, then labelling those who do embrace such opportunity ungrateful?”
So what we have in the BN 2008 General Election Manifesto is a report card about real household income which increased by just 1.0% per year from 2004 to 2007 and the creation of over 1.3 million “job opportunities” instead of “jobs” – whatever that means!

Suggest in your ceramahs now just give due credit to BN on certain things where it is due to them to prove to the rakyat that whatever the PM say is a lie about you. Then after that, you can go on whacking them upside down after the few praises… he he.
The media is very loopsided now and all of them are reporting pro-BN stories and suddenly become enemies of the opposition, though some were critisizing BN a few months ago. Can sense that the media probably could have been threathen of getting thier licenses revoked perhaps until they don’t dare talk anything nice about the opposition.
Though the ceramahs do help, it may not be able to reach out as many people as possible and the opposition has a tougher battle actually as compared to BN who’s in a much favourable situation. However, thanks to the internet, many are turning to them nowadays for alternative news and the opposition must make full use of this opportunity to gain the extra votes that could be critical.
Remember it maybe tough for the opposition to win 75 parliment seats to deny BN a 2/3 majority but the aim here is to increase the opposition seats from 20 previously to a much higher stake to deny BN of a landslide victory again… and winning 75 seats would surely be an icing to the cake then.
To the Almighty ONE, nothing is impossible and let us all unite in prayer in our very own way for divine intervention. The Almighty ONE knows what’s best for this country and remember prayer changes things… no matter what religion you are !

On 13.2.08, the Star (a BN controlled newspaper) screamed: “Parliament will not be dissolved todayâ€. Then on 13.2.08 after 12 noon, Badawi, without any embarrassment, declared to the world the dissolution of parliament.

And people accepted his word in good faith; and when he called for the General Election, the people voted overwhelmingly for him and the BN.
So, when he was attacked left and right by his predecessor, I like many others supported him. My article in Malaysiakini entitled
” Mahathir’s turns to accept decisions now” ( please turn to pages 176-177) in the book ‘ Mahathir vs. Abdullah’ would substantiate what I believed in at that time. Now, as Mr. Lim Kit Siang had given him more than two years to PROVE that he would PRACTISE what he preached, I too, gave him time. Sad to say, he had failed miserably to DELIVER the goods promised solemnly. The Corruption index, fro example, had gone plummeted. The crime arte had gone up; and people live in fear walking the streets. Women and children have to look over their shoulders. Snatch-thieves run wild. Kidnappings of children especially are rampant. The judiciary system is now being questioned by people. The UMNO man who put up an illegal mansion has not been pulled up. The “close one eye” MP has not been punished. Peaceful demonstrators by BERSIH and HINDRAF were sprayed with acid-laced water instead of allowing teh peaceful demonstrations to go on, for they have
genuine grievances . Five HINDRAF demonstrators were locked up in Kamunting detention camp under iSA. If they had done any wrong, why not bring them to court ? IF you have PROOFS, produce them. If you can’t, it is just too bad:you simply could not PROVE your case in the court of law. You cannot used knuckle-dusters to clmap them down and silence them
You said “NO MAN IS ABOVE THE LAW”. Well, your own son-in-law led UMNO Youth and demonstrated against the US State Secretary, Madam Rice, who was an INVITED GUEST of our nation. Was it a proper way to treat a guest ? Was any action taken against him and others who demonstrated ? NO! Then, tehre were demonstrations against those LEGITIMATE Article 11 convenors for an inter-faith conference in Penang, Johore. What happened ? Instead of arresting those who demonstrated, the convenors were told to close shop! And they had the permit to hold conferences. So waht is the purpsoe of asking for a Police permit; and then withdrawing it. Yes, ” No man is above the law ” .
When the UMNO Youth leader brandished his KERIS at the UMNO Assembly, practically implying that he was threatening others races, what was done ? NOTHING! Does his act promote goodwill and harmony? Why was no action taken against him? What would have happened if a MCA member were to raise a samurai sword? Would action be taken then?
Promoting INTER-faith conferences will bring better understanding among the people of various religions.We should encourage them; not stem them .
And now the judiciary is in the dock. When people lose confidence in the judiciary, then it will be the law of the jungle. People will ask “why go to Court?” which is already PREJUDICED. So, how are we going to attract INVESTORS who have to sign CONTRACTS and may have to fight in court, when disputes arise ? Now, teh various CORRIDORS must attract foreign investors for them to be successful. But when they have doubts about teh judicial system, will they think twice before coming in ? No doubt a Royal Commission of Enquiry regarding the Lingam Tape was establised. But this was a missed opportunity to widen thescope of the etrms of reference to include the APPOINTMENT or Promotion of Judges. Why was this opportunity allowed to slip through?
There are many more points whch other readers could elaborate. Suffice to say that as a LEADER, you should LEAD with COURAGE and do what is RIGHT, even at the cost of losing political power.Recall the words of Harry Truman: ” The buck stops here.”
I remember well when AAB took office. Full of gusto….visiting immigration department to speed things out, sacked some corrupt politicians, brought in a tough guy IGP, etc….
Cut down on mega projects and spending, build back the foriegn reserves, basically undoing DR M’s mismanagement. Good start, but unfortunately, most politicians are not there to serve the people. They need to serve themselves first, and when projects are not awarded, money can’t be made. Many promises unfulfilled…. including the multitude of deals arranged by the SIL within the corporate world. And pressure is on him to keep the hungry wolves happy to continue supporting him and not devour him.
And not to look bad, we keeps a team of substandard ministers around him to look good, therefore transforming this government into a circus- and not looking to lose more support, closes one eye on their embarrassing antics…. which now is not only a circus but a global comic spectacle.
This election campaign is the cherry on top. Already making the biggest blooper on the parliament dissolve date and seeing all the unfulfilled promises, he of all people should have taken a more subtle route in winning the hearts of the people…. Admit the mistakes and shortcomings and pledge to do better, not name callings and accusation of your enemies without looking from within. And control your puupets, MIC and MCA, they make him look even worse now with their even more immature approach to winning votes….People are NOT stupid, they can read and see your blooper on national press and TV.

Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi is truly beyond repair. This is someone who came into office in 2003 as a result of Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohamad’s “follyâ€. He ran a convincing campaign and received a resounding mandate. After four years in power, he has proven himself and his administration to be incompetent and as a result the state of Malaysia is rotten. What a big letdown!
Our country is now the butt of jokes at cocktail parties and in the pubs around Bangsar, not to mention across the OIC, the United States, Europe, Japan and China and ASEAN. He lives in an insulated world. Except for himself, nobody believes a word he says anymore. Even his predecessor is actively working to ensure his political demise.
Badawi is a man who has lost touch with reality. He has forgotten that in November last year he said at his own party’s convention with regard to the BERSIH March to the King’s Palace, “saya pantang dicabarâ€. Instead of being cowed, 60,000 Malaysians, mostly Malays, defied him. He is that same UMNO leader who allowed Hishamuddin Tun Hussein Onn (at Khairy Jamaluddin’s behest, of course) to project the worst brand of Malay nationalism by condoning his keris kissing antics. Hishamuddin has stoked the fire of racist politics in the climate of mounting inter-ethnic and religious tensions.
Badawi’s heavy handed actions against Indians who took part in the Hindraf rally and subsequent use of the ISA against five Indian leaders who are in Kamunting, Perak, galvanised the normally timid and compliant Indians into political activism which now threatens the MIC and Samy Velu’s political future. After acting tough, he has since backed down and suddenly he is talking about national unity and appeasing the Indians with imaginary programmes launched just in time for elections. Do you believe that this snake oil salesman?
Badawi promises everything yet he accomplishes nothing. Here is a “leader†who acts not on the basis of firm convictions or set of well founded beliefs, but out of expediency and duplicity. His four year rule– he is now desperately pleading for another five to complete his mission– is a story of mismanagement of the economy, poor public service performance, rampant corruption, rising crime rate and unemployment, inflation, wasteful public expenditure and a humiliating judicial scandal. It will be a major catastrophe for the nation if voters are again deceived by Badawi’s promises.
What of the man himself? If we can believe the New Straits Times (February 9, 2008) and The Star, we know that he has a rather inflated view of himself. He is quoted by both these pro UMNO-Barisan Nasional papers as saying: “I work very hard. I mean it and you know it. As if such boastful arrogance is not enough, he goes on to claim, “I have not benefited one sen from anyone for what I have done. Some people want to give me money, but I do not need it. The government takes good care of its Prime Minister.“
Believe him? He is falling back on his image as Mr. Clean, a charade which got him votes in 2004 but is unlikely to prevail this year given the dismal record of his administration, the ailing economy and the Anwar factor which is never mentioned but talked about often within UMNO circles.
Mr. Badawi hardly strikes us as a hard worker. His era will certainly be remembered as the Sleeping Prime Minister.
But far worse than sleeping on the job is stealing from the purse. One really wonders how an UMNO leader swimming in a sea of corruption, cronyism and patronage who has done nothing to combat endemic corruption is really not on the take. As Minister of Finance, Mr. Badawi is directly responsible for the management of our nation’s tax revenues and it is therefore fair game for the people to ask him a few very important questions.
Why, Mr. Badawi did you purchase an Airbus Corporate Jet costing RM 200 million for your own personal use? How much taxpayers’ money did you spend refurbishing that luxury jet to suit your expensive tastes? The Royal Malaysian Air Force owns planes to fly VIPs and Royalty. Aren’t they good enough for you?
Secondly, how much of taxpayer’s money did you spend on renovating the Official Residence of the Prime Minister after you took office in 2003?
Third, on what basis did you, as Minister of Finance, award the RM25 billion project to redevelop the Penang Turf Club land to Patrick Lim of Equine Capital, or the monorail project costing some RM3 billion to Scomi, a company controlled by your own son, Kamalludin Abdullah.
Fourth, how much subsidy has been given to Rapid Kuala Lumpur to run a bus service? Who are the real owners of this company, which is also running Rapid Penang?
And, fifth, why do you have to spend PETRONAS money to host the annual Monsoon Cup? More questions can be raised, but that is enough.
You said some people want to give you money. Why did you not report this to the Anti-Corruption Agency so that action can be taken against them for attempting to bribe the Prime Minister?
You have plenty to answer for. It does not surprise me that you are unable to deal with Zakaria Ideros, Khir Toyo and even your Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Defence for earning through his cronies a total of nearly RM1 billion as commissions from the purchase of two French made submarines and Russian fighter jets. You are also not able to explain what happened in the case of the RM 4.7 billion Port Kelang Free Trade Zone project where UMNO and MCA leaders are involved, inter alia, in a land acquisition scandal, raking in nearly RM1 billion in profits.
These are not mistakes at all, Mr Prime Minister. They come under the category of “dereliction of duty†and the buck surely stops at your table as Minister of Finance and Prime Minister (as First Lord of the Treasury). The state of Malaysia is rotten under your stewardship. The voters should know that. Unfortunately, your Government controls the media and they barelly know the facts.

There are of course a lot of negative things that are not in the report card.
Islam Hadhari has caused a lot of confusion. There is only one Islam and now they are told that they are followers of Islam Hadhari or modern Islam as if it is a new religion.
With regards to the new development corridors, they are just announcements. Nothing has happened on the ground. The amount of money involved is fantastic. It goes into trillions of ringgit and it will happen over a period of maybe 10 to 20 years. So, these are promises. Anybody can make a promise.
(Although TDM is a master liar himself, he spoke truth this time round.)
