Farce of patriotism by handful of BN MPs – black chapter for Parliament and blot for 50th Merdeka anniversary

A handful of irresponsible Barisan Nasional MPs had disgraced Parliament and demeaned the 50th Merdeka anniversary by staging a farce of patriotism in Parliament yesterday just to score cheap political points to catch Opposition MPs off-guard.

Yesterday’s Parliamentary sitting started at 10 am with the Speaker, Tan Sri Ramli Ngah making a statement on the 50th Merdeka anniversary before the start of the question session, which was quite unusual as the Speaker represents all MPs, both government and opposition, and should only make pronouncements unrelated to the duties of his office after consultation and mandate of both sides of the House.

Opposition MPs were completely unaware that the Speaker was going to make any such announcement on behalf of Parliament, and that was why I was not in the House at the time. Not only the majority of Opposition MPs were not in the House, this applies to the majority of BN MPs — resulting in the Speaker making an important announcement to an empty House!

What was clearly out of order was that the Chairman of the Barisan Backbenchers Club Datuk Raja Ahmad Zainudin Raja Omar (BN — Larut) followed up with a speech which he read from a prepared text (proof of prior knowledge and pre-planning) ending up with his call to MPs to emulate Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman 50 years ago with seven shouts of Merdeka in Parliament.

The farce ended with the BN MP for Kinabatangan Datuk Bung Moktar Radin deriding the Opposition benches and asking offensively whether the two Opposition parties did not celebrate Merdeka.

There were only one or two MPs each from DAP and PAS in the House at the time and they did not respond to Raja Ahmad’s call probably for three reasons:

(i) it was completely against parliamentary Standing Orders;
(ii) no prior notice or consultation; and
(iii) more a farce than a serious expression of celebration of 50th Merdeka anniversary.

Nanyang Siang Pau, which carries a daily tally of parliamentary attendance at 10 am, 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm, reported that there were only 31 MPs when Parliament started its sitting yesterday at 10 am — which was just five above the quorum of 26 MPs.

With only 25 or 26 BN MPs in the House — which is only one-seventh or one-eighth of the total BN total of 199 MPs – how could Raja Ahmad be so irresponsible in staging a farce of patriotism in Parliament just to catch the Opposition MPs off-guard to get an excuse to accuse the Opposition MPs of being unpatriotic?

Does it mean that the over 85% of the BN MPs (including Ministers, Deputy Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries) were unpatriotic for being absent from the House to respond to Raja Ahmad ‘s call for seven shouts of Merdeka in Parliament yesterday? Even the Speaker, Tan Sri Ramli Ngah did not stand up from his chair to shout Merdeka seven times. Was the Speaker also unpatriotic?

If Raja Ahmad’s seven shouts of Merdeka were not a cheap political trickery to entrap the Opposition MPs, BN MPs like Bung Moktar and Datuk Mohd Said Yusuf (BN — Jasin) would not have immediately pounced on it to accuse DAP MPs of being unpatriotic.

During the subsequent exchange during question time, I called on MPs to stand up in Parliament to give seven Merdeka shouts of “social contract”, with all DAP MPs present in the House responding in unison. Could all the BN MPs be accused of being disloyal to the Merdeka social contract as none of the BN MPs had joined in?

If in Parliament next week, I am to stand up to call on all MPs to shout Merdeka seven times, and if no one from the BN benches responded, can all the BN MPs be accused of being unpatriotic?

The farce of patriotism staged by a handful of BN MPs yesterday has spoiled the significance of the Golden Jubilee of Malaysian nationhood for at least two important reasons:

  • Disgracing and dishonouring Parliament as if Malaysians need more proof to show that Malaysia is a very long way off from a first-world Parliament which debate momentous national issues like the RM4.6 billion Port Klang Free Zone bailout scandal or the new crisis of confidence in the integrity, quality and professionalism of the system of justice instead of indulging in childish antics;
  • Debasing and demeaning the 50th Merdeka anniversary celebrations — with the handful of irresponsible BN MPs causing division and greater disunity among the Malaysian rakyat when this should be an occasion for all Malaysians including MPs, regardless of race, religion or political beliefs to come together as Malaysians..

The farce of patriotism by a handful of BN MPs yesterday is a black chapter for Parliament and a blot for the 50th Merdeka anniversary celebrations!

  1. One of many sandiwaras to come to discredit the opposition in view of the coming elections. These jokers are so desperate that they have to make use of the parliament to score some propaganda points.

Another sandiwara is that of the choice of flag hoister for the Merdeka celebrations; KJ!

After 50 years of independence, all they can come up with to do the honor of hoisting the flag is HIM?

Whatever happen to all the other achievers among the malays? Or are they sending a message that there are NO achievers among them after 50 years of independence?

  2. I read about this first on malaysia-today, and then I searched for the video on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mMtKtbcBwI). I hope to be able to witness comedies like this in person in future parliament meetings (I read there are some students observing the meeting).

Nothing much I can say about this, except 2 things:

    1) The farce is strong with this one (referring to BN)

    2) May the farce be with you (again, referring to BN)

  3. I think Lim Kit Siang is the same stubborn person like the BN government. Keep propagating the wrong information over and over about the 50th Merdeka Anniversary …. may be you are right about the Merdeka of Malaya; You did not indicate clearly which one it is. We hope you are the opposition leader for Malaysia and not for Malaya. Malaysia is 44 years old.

  4. Yeah lah , all you opposition M.P,s are not PATRITOISM at all, ALL the B.N ,M.P,s are ,We allow well connected political companies to pollute the sea and rivers, Build palaces on land mean for the poor, Rob the poor to give to the rich,
Build RM 400,000 toilet and charge all you poor people RM 1 to use it.

The best part of the B.N GORVERMENT is ,we can build RM hundred million building, and went it cracks and leak ,We can blame GOD, So now you all can see how PATRITOSM WE IN THE B.N GOVERMENT ARE, SHAME on you opposition people

  5. Next, all Malaysians must shout “NEP” seven times to show their support for it.
NEP! NEP! NEP! NEP! NEP! NEP! NEP!

    After that, “Hadhari!” 7 times….
Hadhari! Hadhari! Hadhari! Hadhari! Hadhari! Hadhari! Hadhari!

And lastly, “Negara Islam!” another 7 times
Negara Islam! Negara Islam! Negara Islam! Negara Islam!Negara Islam! Negara Islam! Negara Islam!

A toast to all the fools who voted for BN in 2004 GE

  6. I am shocked. I am surprised…….

…..that the Speaker Ramly Ngah Talib did not reject it as “not specific, not in the public interest and not urgent”. Then again, he’s a lackey and lackeys have feeble minds.

All these cretins trying to emulate the Tunku with their 7 shouts of “Merdeka”. Hey, Tunku finally left UMNO remember? He couldn’t stand being associated with you midgets and dwarfs.

  7. What a shame, 50 years on and this is the calibre of BN(umno) MPs we have in Parliament, behaving like monkeys? That type of behavior does no one any good, not umno, not opposition and definitely not Malaysia.

    Grow up guys!

  8. Well we all should shout seven times BN go to hell! BN go to hell!
BN go to hell! BN go to hell! BN go to hell! BN go to hell! BN go to hell! Hope seven times they will spend their time in hell, for corruption, racist, etc, etc.

  9. Why was KJ chosen to hoist the flag? What has he contributed to the nation? Even a torch bearer for the Olympics was chosen based on achievements and not simply any Tom DICK or KJew can do it. ANd here we hv celebrating 50th MErdeka we have a kutu jantan doing it.

He just spoiled my MERDEKA mood. Maybe I should be shouting TAK TAU MALU KA!

p/s: NOt that I was in the mood to celebrate in the 1st place.

  10. It was 50th Anniversary Merdeka Ploy and well orchestrated antics of the BN MPs in an effort to embarrass and put the DAP MPs to shame for failing to rise to the occasion when the Dewan Rakyat started the day’s proceeding with 7 shouts of “Merdeka” lead by BN MP & Chairman of the Backbencher Club, Datuk Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar. DAP MPs failed to rise to the occasion in joining them for the shouts of “Merdeka” as they were not aware what was happening. The Speaker for once was with the DAP.

  11. I repeat, those monkeys hurt this nation of Malaysia even more. It’s sad, so very sad on 50th anniversary of Merdeka. Look at us today, so much resentment and mistrust has been created and thanks to those politicians!

Mr Prime Minister, you have failed us. You have messed up this nation and please, the day after tommorrow when all those hypocritical celebration is over, please do not speak in fork tongue and call for unity. We have enough of UMNO and Barisan National.

  12. Ha ha ha!

Something just hit me a few seconds ago. While most non-malays will be celebrating 50 years of Independence, I have to say that the Malays will be celebrating 50 years of dependence……I find that totally hilarious!

So what is all the shouting “merdeka” for?

  13. To these UMNO clowns, you oppose the government of the day, you are unpatriotic and should have your citizenship stripped. In UK, conservative member are unpatriotic and so ar democrats in the US according to their pea brains.

  14. While 31st August can be marked as independence day for the non-malays, I fail to see how it can be celebrated as such by the malays who are still largely dependent on handouts, contracts, special seats for university, jobs, education, scholarships etc. So the malays remain largely dependent. Its the others who can truly say they have independence. The malays dont even have freedom in religious matters!

With that sobering thought, lets really celebrate 31st August 2007, 50 years of TRUE INDEPENDENCE!

  15. To clueless BN, shouting and waving flags is a sign of patriotism…Its plain propaganda. If they are so patriotic, please declare your assets to the public! I dare you…but as usual, they are all sleeping when they should be working. What is Merdeka anyway?

  16. patriotism is determined by what you contribute to your country, not by what you steal from your country. I contribute my taxes on time, only to see the BN clowns squander public money time and time again.

Under such circumstances, should I be celebrating with the very thieves who steal my hard-earned money ?

Bung Moktar – he should be called Dung Moktar, and maybe even that is too much of a compliment.

  17. There is a time and place for everything. You don’t have your dinner in the toilet do you? You don’t shit in the living hall do you ? He should go to the zoo or perhaps the jungle and shout Merdeka 7 times. All the animals there will stand attention and shout Merdeka too.

One thing for sure, if someone goes round saying everyone else is not patriotic then that person is really “musuh dalam selimut”. Just wait for his big fat mouth to open and the truth be known.

  18. Uncouth, Uncultured and Despicable Louts – that sadly is the type of MPs we have from the BN sitting in Parliament.

YB, what do you expect from morons who would not think twice about slaughtering cattle in the august grounds of Parliament and desecrating its dignity.

  19. Why bother lowering the Union Jack in pursuit of celebrating the 50th Merdeka? Isn’t that considered an insult to the UK and the Queen? Why can’t they just raise the Jalur Gemilang alone without showing any form of biasness towards other countries? Why show such a great contrast? Just to have the “syok sendiri” effect? Were the British the only ones who occupied Malaysia? Think again! What about the Dutch, Portuguese, Siamese, and the brutal Japanese? Without the British, do you think Malaysia would be where and what it is today? Think about it!

Namewee did not show any form of disrespect towards the Jalur Gemilang, and in fact, he proudly displayed it as a backdrop due to his love and loyalty towards Malaysia. However, to those sohai UMNOputras and MCA running mutts, that’s considered unpatriotic and treason, and that he must be stripped of his citizenship. When KJ burnt the Stars and Stripes in the presence of Condoleeza Rice and started shouting profanities at her, not even a single criticism was hurled at him, much less action taken against him. When those ungrateful bunch of barbaric Mat Indons burnt hundreds of Jalur Gemilang, not a single soul in the government batted an eyelid. Is this what they mean by prosper thy neighbour (just because of the same creed and colour)?

Why the double, triple, and may I say quadruple standard?

This Merdeka is just like any other Merdeka in the past 49 years. The only difference is that, they only change the form and not the substance of it. It’s just like the many facelifts done to a Proton Waja.

  20. Patriotism defined these set of nitwits in parliament is simply laughable for the only thing they know is steal, steal steal and steal!!!They haven’t got the brains and integrity to earn their keeps and the only thing left for true Malaysians to do is to boot the whole lot out in the coming GE.This lovely country cannot afford to have these people in the driving seat any longer for when the oil revenue runs out in 4 years time this country will be in shit street without a shovel.

  21. Looks like they didn’t know the result of that action, or they expect the people to believe them and hate DAP? they treating the people like kids, for over 50 years, and they still doing the same thing. We loved the country, as we know, and we don’t have to show it, that’s just showing how fake is the love.

  22. is it true that the moron of all morons actually hoisted our national flag for the 50th anniversary celebrations?? in what capacity?? Goodness, this is really the pits! i am at a loss of words…..

  23. We should be eternally grateful to the British. Otherwise Malaya will come under Siam, and Sarawak.Sabah will come under Soekarno during the Confrontation. The British left a wonderful system of govt but only to spoil by Umnoputras like queen of APs alone netted a few billions away in secret, close one eye MP, ex- MB carried millions to buy property in Australia and now VP Umno, anti-corruption chief not charged etc…
